FAR-RIGHT GROUPS AROUND GATEJERUSALEM - MAY 14, 2026: Police in Jerusalem intervened as groups of far-right Israelis took part in the controversial “Flag March” marking the occupation of East Jerusalem on Thursday, May 14. During the march, police attempted to disperse participants accused of disorderly conduct near the Damascus Gate. Israelis who have settled on Palestinian land hold the annual march on the anniversary of the Israeli army’s occupation of East Jerusalem, according to the Hebrew calendar. Thousands of far-right Israeli participants reportedly entered the Old City through Damascus Gate carrying Israeli flags and chanting slogans including “Death to Arabs” and “Let’s burn Palestinian villages.” Israeli police were seen setting up numerous barricades across different parts of the city and preventing Palestinians from entering the Old City area. According to Israeli media, about 50,000 occupiers were expected to hold the flag march through East Jerusalem. During the annual event, participants march from Damascus Gate through the Old City, accompanied by nationalist songs, heading toward the Western Wall. Since 2003, Israeli police have allowed occupiers to enter the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound daily, except Fridays and Saturdays. Israeli occupiers stormed the mosque 30 times in April, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs. Palestinians say Israel has intensified efforts for decades to Judaize East Jerusalem, including Al-Aqsa Mosque, and erase the city’s Arab and Islamic identity. Palestinians seek East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, citing international resolutions that do not recognize Israel’s occupation of the city in 1967 or its annexation in 1980.
