Footage captured by PHIVOLCS’ Lignon Hill IP camera showed a bright object streaking across the night sky near the volcano during ongoing volcanic activity. PHIVOLCS initially reported that the meteor had struck the northern slopes of Mayon Volcano at around 10:33 p.m. local time. However, the agency later clarified that further review of seismic, infrasound and additional camera footage indicated that the meteor disintegrated in the atmosphere and did not impact the volcano. The incident occurred as Mayon Volcano continued its eruptive activity, including lava effusion and minor Strombolian eruptions. Mayon Volcano, located in Albay province in the central Philippines, remains among the country’s most active volcanoes.
