The spinning column of air picked up ash and dust as it traveled across the volcanic ground. Scientists said it likely formed when hot air from the lava rose and mixed with cooler air above, causing the air to spin. The whirlwind lasted only a few moments before disappearing. Kilauea, located on Hawaii's Big Island, is one of the world's most active volcanoes and is closely watched by scientists.
