The helicopters have been supporting firefighting operations from the air since Saturday as emergency crews work to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further. The wildfire has been burning since Friday in the High Fens, around 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the border with the Dutch province of Limburg. Although Chinook helicopters are primarily used for military transport operations, they can also be deployed to support civilian authorities, according to the Dutch air force. The cross-border operation involves emergency personnel working on the ground alongside aerial firefighting support.
