DISPLACED PALESTINIAN UMM AHMED SIFSIF SPEAKING TO REPORTER GAZA, PALESTINE - JUNE 20, 2026: On World Refugee Day, displaced Palestinians in the Gaza Strip described difficult living conditions in tent shelters amid the ongoing Israeli attacks despite ceasefire. The United Nations marks World Refugee Day annually on June 20 to highlight the situation of displaced people worldwide. Residents said repeated displacement due to Israeli genocidal war has left families facing shortages of water, food and basic services, with many living in temporary tents. Umm Fahd Barbah, a displaced resident from Khan Younis, said she and her family of nine children, along with her son’s family, have been displaced four times since the start of the war. She said living conditions in tent shelters are harsh due to heat, water shortages and lack of basic services, adding that they have lost their homes, savings and normal living conditions and now struggle to secure water, food and shelter for their children. Sena Abu Tayr said she has been repeatedly displaced since the start of the conflict, adding that life in tent shelters has deprived her family of safety and stability. She said that before the war, they lived in a home with access to basic necessities, but now struggle daily to obtain water and prepare meals. Umm Ahmed Sifsif said she has been displaced more than 12 times during the conflict, adding that her home was destroyed in Israeli strikes and her family has had to restart their lives multiple times. She said tents offer little protection from summer heat, while water shortages and insects add to difficult conditions, but that she still hopes to return home. Early Saturday at least six Palestinians, including four from the same family, were killed and others injured in the Gaza Strip amid continued Israeli violations of an ongoing ceasefire, according to medical and eyewitness accounts. The attacks come amid continued Israeli breaches of the truce that took effect in October 2025. As of Thursday, those violations have killed 1,007 Palestinians and injured 3,165 others, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The ceasefire agreement followed Israel’s two years of genocidal war on Gaza, which killed more than 73,000 Palestinians, injured over 173,000 others, and caused widespread destruction to around 90% of civilian infrastructure.
