SMOKE RISINGPALERMO, SICILY ISLAND, ITALY - JULY 11, 2026: Ground and aerial crews deployed across western and southern of Italy's Sicily on Saturday, July 11, to battle multiple active wildfires threatening residential areas. A major blaze that ignited between the towns of Montelepre and Sagana, near Palermo, spread rapidly overnight. Local authorities evacuated vulnerable residents from Sagana as a precaution during the night. While ground teams fought the perimeter in the dark, water-dropping helicopters and fixed-wing firefighting aircraft joined the operation at first light to support containment lines. Italian media reported that active suppression efforts are also underway at three separate wildfire sites near Trapani and Agrigento. Meanwhile, Italy's national fire service, Vigili del Fuoco, said firefighting conditions have improved in the northwestern Piedmont region following overnight rainfall. Heavy storms significantly aided crews in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola area, though ground teams and helicopters continue working to extinguish stubborn hotspots near Cravagliana and Valprato Soana outside Turin.
