ASHRAF SABIH, MOBILE PHONE SHOP OWNER, SPEAKING TO CAMERA (Arabic) GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - AUG. 21: Israeli restrictions on the entry of spare parts, smartphones and technical equipment into the Gaza Strip have made mobile phones increasingly difficult and costly to obtain, according to local technicians. The shortage of replacement parts has severely affected Gaza's mobile phone repair sector, forcing many residents to repeatedly repair old or damaged devices instead of buying new ones. Engineer Mahir Islim said prices of both phones and spare parts have risen sharply. A standard mobile phone that previously sold for between 400 and 700 Israeli shekels now costs around 2,500 to 3,000 shekels, he said. Islim added that replacing a phone screen, which previously cost about 80 shekels, can now cost between 800 and 1,000 shekels because of the scarcity of parts. He said many customers are unable to have their devices repaired and are forced to leave repair shops without a solution. University students are among those most affected by the shortage and high prices, according to Islim. Restrictions on the entry of commercial and technical goods have also affected residents' access to communication devices at a time when mobile phones remain an important means of contacting relatives, accessing information and maintaining links with the outside world.
