Participants recited elegies and lamentations in remembrance of Imam Hussein and his companions, while mourners joined commemorative rituals inside the shrine complex. Many attendees took part in the recitations, with some weeping during the ceremony. Muharram mourning ceremonies commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was killed alongside his companions in the Battle of Karbala in 680 A.D.
