EVENT IN NEIGHBORHOODTEHRAN, IRAN - MAY 14: Residents of Tehran, including members of the Iranian Jewish community, gathered at the ruins of the Rafieinia Synagogue on Thursday, May 14, to honor the site following recent US and Israeli strikes. The gathering featured the Iranian national anthem and musical performances staged directly on the synagogue's rubble. Participants held both Islamic and Hebrew prayers, reflecting the city’s diverse religious environment and a message of interfaith solidarity. Arash Tehrani, representing the Iranian Jewish community, noted that the meeting demonstrated the resilience and interconnectedness of the Iranian people. He called for peace and the swift reconstruction of all religious and civilian infrastructure that the strikes damaged. An activist Sedra Nuri pointed to the historical coexistence of Muslims, Jews, Christians, and Armenians in the neighborhood and described the attack on the synagogue as an assault on Iranian civilization. According to Iranian reports in early April, the US-Israeli strikes flattened Rafieinia Synagogue and "desecrated Torah scrolls." "This despicable war crime was committed during the Jewish holidays, as Homayoun Sameyah, the representative of Iran's Jewish community in the Parliament, reported," Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said on US social media company X. The attack is "abhorred by all Iranians," he said. "Iranians are united & resolved in defending their homeland." Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said the synagogue has served as “a house of worship for Iranian Jews for many decades.” "It was destroyed today in an attack carried out by the Israeli criminals," he added on X. Regional escalations have continued to rage since Israel and the US launched an offensive against Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure, while disrupting global markets and aviation.
