The receding river exposes large stretches of the riverbed while children are seen playing in the remaining shallow water. Indonesia is beginning to experience reduced river flows and increasing drought risks. Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts the 2026 dry season will be drier and longer than normal, with peak conditions expected from July to September. BMKG also predicts that nearly half of the country's seasonal climate zones will experience below-normal rainfall, raising concerns over water availability, agriculture, and an elevated risk of forest and land fires.
