A pod of Chinese white dolphins have been spotted by tourists in Bochao Bay, Danzhou City, south China's Hainan Province, with footage showing two of the rare marine mammals swimming and playing in the waters. The Chinese white dolphin, a species under the first-class state protection, is often called "aquatic giant panda." It is also a flagship species of the marine ecosystem. Calves are typically dark gray, gradually turning pinkish-white as they mature. The global population of Chinese white dolphins is 6,000, with approximately 5,000 distributed in Chinese waters, where the population has remained stable and their habitats continue to improve, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. This year marks the conclusion of the "Action Plan for the Conservation of Chinese White Dolphins (2017-2026)," which was initiated and carried out by the ministry. The dolphin sighting in Danzhou is a reassuring sign of the plan's success in protecting the species and preserving the health of China's coastal ecosystems.
