Herd crossing road, climbing hill Storyline More than 180 rare white‑lipped deer were spotted on Tuesday crossing a river in Shiqu County, Sichuan Province, with their movement marked by a natural rhythm and instinctive order. The white-lipped deer is a rare large deer species found only in China, mainly inhabiting alpine meadows and shrublands at 3,500 to 5,000 meters above sea level. They are usually observed in small groups of three to five or a dozen individuals. The white-lipped deer is under the first-class state protection in China and was included in the Red List of Endangered Species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 2015. Thanks to local environmental protection efforts, its total population has now expanded to above 10,000.
