Haikou, China - June 12, 2026 Scientists display research findings on a 5.3-million-year-old whale graveyard discovered in the southeastern Indian Ocean during a presentation in Haikou, China on June 12, 2026. The Chinese Academy of Sciences announced the discovery of the world's deepest and largest collection of whale remains at depths up to 7,000 meters in the Diamantina Zone, including the deepest active whale-fall ecosystem ever recorded at 6,789 meters.
