Storyline China leads world in nuclear power capacity China has accelerated its development and construction of new and existing nuclear power plants this year. The country's nuclear power units in operation and 58 under construction have an installed generation capacity of 135 million kilowatts, making it the global leader in nuclear power generation capacity and plant construction. One project under construction is the second phase of the Haiyang Nuclear Power Plant in east China's Shandong Province. Li Jianwei, Chief commander, Phase II of Haiyang Nuclear Power Plant, State Power Investment Corp (SPIC): "Units 3 and 4 of Haiyang Nuclear Power Plant all adopt domestically designed and indigenous technologies. After they are fully put into operation in 2027, the four units will generate 40 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, which can meet the electricity demand of half of the residents in Shandong." As a key energy source driving China's green transformation, nuclear power contributes to nearly five percent of the country's total electricity generation, despite accounting for less than two percent of the national installed power capacity. In four provinces, Guangdong, Fujian, Liaoning and Hainan, nuclear power accounts for more than 15 percent of their total electricity generation. Zhao Xueshun, Deputy director, Nuclear Power Department, National Energy Administration: "China has established a large-scale, comprehensive, high-level and highly capable nuclear power industrial and supply chain system. The localization rate of equipment has exceeded 90 percent, making China one of the few countries in the world with a complete nuclear power industrial system."
