Storyline China accelerates its push for fusion energy as next-gen artificial sun project takes shape China's plans to develop a fusion power source that would provide clean non-stop energy like the sun, is taking shape. Work has been ongoing across several regions. In eastern China's Hefei City, the Burning Plasma Experimental Superconducting Tokamak, or BEST, has moved into a final stage of construction with completion set for next year. Huang Xiongyi, engineering director, BEST project: "The main ring installation started in June and is scheduled to be finished by early next year. We are working toward completing the entire machine and its support systems by 2027." Over a thousand kilometers away in southwest China's Chengdu, a fusion innovation hub is in the works. Spanning 320 hectares, it will house national R&D centers, major facilities and private firms. The plan is to build five innovation platforms to service more than 50 industry-chain enterprises, and drive the fusion power industry scale beyond $3 billion U.S. dollars in the next three to five years. Wang Yang, chairman, Sichuan Fusion New Energy Industry Investment and Development Co., Ltd.: "Through the transformation and incubation of scientific innovations, we can drive fusion's upstream and downstream industries – building a full ecosystem. Different players in the chain can learn from one another, collaborate, and make breakthroughs together." Under the current research plan, BEST aims to achieve a fusion power output of 20 to 200 megawatts, with the goal of demonstrating fusion based electricity generation by the year 2030.
