Chile - September 07, 2026 A colossal cosmic structure 5,000 times the mass of the Milky Way has been revealed in observations from when the Universe was only 2.1 billion years old. The structure, known as COSMOS-z3.1-A, is a proto-supercluster, the ancestor of a cluster of clusters of galaxies. Astronomers identified it as the most distant and earliest proto-supercluster ever found. The international team identified 150 distant protoclusters that formed when the Universe was about 1–3 billion years old before focusing on COSMOS-z3.1-A and COSMOS-z3.1-C because of their striking concentrations of galaxies. Detailed three-dimensional maps showed that the ancient structures are clumpy and irregular and lie at intersections of multiple cosmic web filaments. The observations provide direct evidence of features expected from the way matter is distributed throughout the cosmos. Both structures are predicted to evolve into galaxy clusters more massive than the Coma Cluster, the largest known galaxy cluster in the local Universe. Researchers found COSMOS-z3.1-A to be exceptionally rare, estimating that fewer than one such object should exist for every 10,000 galaxy clusters. The study relied largely on data from the ODIN survey, with additional spectra obtained using several instruments. The findings support models in which smaller cosmic structures form first and merge into increasingly larger ones.
