Authorities said the destroyed weapons had been seized during police operations or voluntarily surrendered by citizens. The firearms included pistols, rifles, revolvers, shotguns and air rifles. Officials reported that nearly 5,000 weapons have been destroyed in Chile since the beginning of 2026, marking an increase compared to the same period last year. The destruction campaign forms part of a broader state policy aimed at limiting the circulation of illegal weapons. Chilean authorities said more than 22,000 firearms were destroyed throughout 2025, the highest annual figure recorded in the country.
