How to make a wooden slapper.
Wray wants to create a video once per month on making tools. In the past we showed how to make a slapper so now we're making a wooden slapper.
He starts out with a piece of hardwood from a skid. He cuts out the wood using the template he created. Grinds down the handle and puts in a radius on the edges. Then using an old weight belt, Wray cuts out a piece large enough to cover the wooden slapper. He punches 6 holes into the leather large enough for 1" no. 12 round head sheet metal screws. Marks the holes on the slapper and screws the leather in. Wray dresses the wood with Howard: Feed and Wax, puts the leather back on and voila, a wooden slapper!
We will have the template on our site for you to print out. It's going to be larger than one piece of paper so we ended up cutting it in half with a guide line to match the templates together.

Hi, it's Ray from Pro Shaper workshop in Charlton, Massachusetts And I think I'll try to make this a regular feature every week is
0:25
I've done the metal slapper before I've got a nice video on how to make that metal slapper
0:30
but a wood slapper is very important tool to to have and
0:35
It's just the shape that you want and a piece of inexpensive wood. This is a hard wood from a
0:42
Shipping a skid or a shipping crate. I get them all the time and I ended up using them mostly for firewood
0:50
Give them away to people who need them for firewood but I've made up this little nice design for the slapper
0:58
And we're going to cut this out in the band saw and then we'll take a little three inch grinder and dress it all up
1:04
And then we'll put some leather on it. So we'll do a quick little video and
1:09
Then maybe what we'll do is we'll put the dimensions up this of this on our website
1:16
www.proshaper.com and You can download this and maybe print it out in two pieces on your printer
1:24
So we'll break it up into two pieces We'll scale it and then you'll be able to print out the patent on your regular home printer
1:31
And then all you gotta do is cut it all out So the next step making this is I'm gonna cut this a this skid wood is a little suspect
1:41
Sometimes it has a crack in it and so I'm hoping I've selected the best spot
1:46
this it looks like it's really nice hardwood and We'll cut that up and and get this piece out of here and then start cutting it out
1:55
And hopefully we don't have any cracks and you always got to watch for nails
1:59
You don't wreck your your bandsaw blade when you're cutting this out. So when I come back, I'll have it all
2:06
trimmed out as far as around its circumference But then we'll have to narrow down the handle so it becomes a good grip and then we'll dress it up a little bit
2:16
And then we'll put a leather face on it. All right So now I've got the main body all cut out, but I've got to narrow up this handle
2:26
For so it feels good in your hand here. So I'm trying to get a centerline going here
2:33
Just eyeball this centerline There's a centerline I'm off about 40,000 this way
2:43
All right, so we'll come in like that And we'll make a template off of this too, so you'll have that dimension there I
3:08
Really love to free freehand stuff Yeah, it's a nice way to explore ideas
3:22
I've been drawing since I was probably about four years old That doesn't look too bad
3:32
So we'll cut that and then we're gonna take a three inch
3:36
50 grit grinder air grinder and we grind this all up nice you can see the The wood actually is pretty nice No no no no there no cracks that present at all So it a super hot hot wood
3:51
I don't even know what it is to tell you the truth But it should should do the job really nice
3:58
So we'll bandsaw that up and back in a minute. All right So we got it all cut out and now this is all square and we want to round that a little bit there and
4:07
And we want to round this a lot so that We'll get a really good grip. It's wider on the back here, which means it it's more
4:18
User-friendly as far as it won't slip out of your hand so much so and then I added this little
4:25
Diagonal on the end here, which I'm gonna grind this way to just give it a little decorative touch there
4:33
But this is going to be radius quite a bit just a little in here
4:37
So we'll take that a brand new 50 grit I use Norton blaze on a little air grinder and would show a little bit of it and
4:46
Then we'll do it off camera and then show you the finished product. It's important. You use a brand new disc because
4:54
If it's been grinding steel already, it's lost its edge a little bit and it won't cut the wood as nice. So
5:00
Yeah, I should have gloves on and then put a face mask and everything But I'm trying to just do the little bit of the video here and then I'll put a all the safety equipment
5:12
So we're going to try to get it so it doesn't It works the best now I'll follow this up with a foam pad a rotary foam pad and
5:27
We'll show a little bit of that and this thing will be all sanded up beautifully
5:31
Even here where it's rough It only takes minutes to get it to be nice and smooth
5:39
So we'll get the rest of it all ground up and we'll come back. So here we are
5:44
That was with the Norton blaze 50 grit roll lock Shaped it all up put the radius is on it got a really nice radius on the handle
5:55
It feels really good. Your thumb sets right like that or you can go like that too either way
6:01
And then we put a mild radius on here and a little stronger radius here and around the nose
6:09
And I gave this little decorative diamond on the end here too
6:13
So now that 50 grit It's probably alright the way it is but I'm going to take and use that little hobb afraid detail sander and
6:23
Just show you a minute of it. Then I'll put my safety gear all on But we'll show you how nice this will come out with
6:31
You This is 80 grit 2 inch 80 grit But that foam pad navigates around all those nice radiuses and smooth them out beautifully
6:52
It's all done by I too. You got to learn to do stuff by I Back in the 90s. I was working on a 540 K Mercedes Cavalier a doing a lot of restoration work on it and
7:10
at that time I was reading the Wall Street Journal on a daily basis and
7:16
Fun little story the owner of the Mercedes was feeling if the figuring he was going to get about a million dollars
7:23
on the sale of the Mercedes if he was lucky and here I am reading this story in the Wall Street Journal of these back at the turn of the century in the 1900s these
7:35
Fishermen in the in the wintertime they would carve duck decoys and it sort of looks like a little duck decoy and I'm looking at these duck decoys which
7:45
There's a regular antique trade on them and they were selling for like two and a half million dollars for one duck to decoy
7:53
So maybe in a hundred years this might be worth a hundred grand or something who knows
8:04
You can see how nice that comes out. So we'll do that off-camera We'll get the finished product and then we're going to put some leather on the face
8:13
All right. So after about ten minutes with that harbor freight little two-inch
8:17
hook it foam pad little detail sander all the 50 grit grind marks from the
8:25
The other little 3 inch air grinder all came out. We put the nice little soft radius is everywhere
8:31
This handle is really comfortable and it got I left that little deep detail on there
8:37
I made that little diamond on the back as a little decorative
8:42
detail now what goes on here now is a vegetable tanned leather and it's usually about
8:50
3 16th or quarter thick or so and last summer I have a
8:58
Gentleman in town here who has a permanent yard sale every every weekend. He's always open and I always go in there
9:05
He's always got something interesting. So I usually buy this leather from McMaster car. They sell it in all kinds of widths and lengths and stuff and
9:14
It's a little pricey. I don't know probably 20 bucks for a little piece is big or something
9:19
I'd have to look it up, but he had this nice weightlifting belt in there, which is the same material and
9:29
It didn't fit me I'm not going to go on a diet anytime soon
9:35
So I says well that will make a great slapper face material
9:39
So hopefully we get two slappers out of this and it was folded over like that and this is where you want to
9:46
Attach it is up here. So it's already got the nice fold in it
9:50
so all I got to do is mark it cut it and then screw it and
9:54
Then we'll oil this all up and it'll take its nice color and everything
9:58
So we'll be back in a little bit and we'll have it ready to go
10:02
So I got the leather all cut up in the bandsaw and it turns out
10:07
Look at this Perfect got enough enough leather left for another one plus
10:14
Got a strap for a hood, you know, old fire truck or something like that. There's your hood strap right there
10:19
So that was a pretty good $5 purchase Now I got a leather belt punch. I got it marked off here
10:35
And I'm going to use these she metal screws because Don't want the screws breaking and she metal screws are hardened and and they should be no problem going into that wood
10:45
we'll put a little grease on them and We've got six holes. We got a punch here
10:51
Try to get them all about the same. Alright, there's three there and then we'll have three over here
10:59
so we'll punch these holes we're gonna drill the holes get it mounted and
11:05
Get the screws in there probably take them out and then I oil this Then put it all back together again and you see it all finished I think it going to be a nice little piece I mocking this out Then we drill those holes out
11:32
It's a little white grease on the screw threads Really nicely We're going to take this apart again because we're going to oil this up. So now we got to get the
11:45
Holes drilled over on this side We're not going through okay, let's do those and I'll mock the other one with this just drill into it
11:56
Do this There's a carb of freight cordless drills I found I bought two of them I found them to be very very good machine
12:10
Very happy with them. I Have a bunch of different ones Yeah, this white grease I
12:19
Get that from McMaster car This is the best white white grease I've ever used I've used the ones in the tubes before and it's
12:28
It's very runny. This stuff is really thick and really holds on
12:33
really good stuff One little tub like that last years I got the leather all nice and tight around the nose and on the body
12:43
That's a nice machine. Yeah nice tool. So next we'll take that all apart and
12:51
We'll oil it up With this wood treatment here, let's see what it looks like. I will put some
13:00
Oil and wood food on here Brush that on You see now the colors coming up good. That's something I get at Home Depot
13:14
This will seal it this is the best part of doing any woodwork is when you
13:18
Let the color come through on your wood Really nice I just sanded it with 80 if I sanded it with
13:28
120 would be a little bit better, but 80s fine on this A nice rag on it
13:42
That should do it now we assemble it back up again So there you have it the finished product
13:51
Good for another hundred years or so That'll be a welcome addition in the shop. I always have a whole bunch of students and
14:00
Need two or three four slappers at all times. So It's not a two million dollar duck decoy, but in a hundred years it might be worth a hundred grand
14:12
so This is a nice little project you can make at home. The cost is very inexpensive
14:18
Expensive we're going to be doing these Make your own tools videos probably a couple times a month probably and we'll have a little section on the website where you can download the
14:31
the free template for this and We'll have a dimension drawing and you can make it yourself and there's a whole bunch of ideas
14:39
I've got for little tools that are very Helpful in the metal shaping shop. All right. So thanks for watching
