hi in this video i'm going to show you
0:02
how to make your own scrunchies
0:04
they're really easy to make any sewer
0:06
can do this
0:07
have them to match every outfit you want
0:09
make them as gifts even make them to
0:10
sell
0:11
so i'm christine of christinescrass.com
0:13
and this channel is dedicated to
0:15
crafting on a budget
0:17
so what are you going to need really
0:20
very little to make your scrunchies
0:21
you're just going to need some elastic
0:24
which
0:25
i've chosen to use 0.5 of an inch wide
0:27
elastic
0:28
it doesn't matter if it's a bit wider or
0:29
a bit narrower whatever you've got
0:31
available
0:32
and you want to cut it seven and a half
0:34
inches long
0:36
now that's entirely up to you you can
0:37
make it a different size if you want you
0:39
can measure round your wrist
0:40
and then add an inch on or you can make
0:43
the standard size that i'm suggesting
0:45
perhaps play around with it make them
0:46
different sizes
0:48
you're also going to need a piece of
0:49
fabric that you're going to make your
0:50
scrunchie out of
0:52
and you want to cut it six inches
0:56
by 28 inches again you can play around
1:00
with these measurements once you've made
1:01
one
1:02
try different sizes make them fuller by
1:04
putting
1:05
making them longer and make them more
1:08
defined
1:09
by making them shorter and narrower but
1:12
that's something to play with later
1:14
firstly you want to take your fabric and
1:16
you want to
1:17
at either end of the length onto the
1:19
wrong side you want to press
1:21
a small hem just two or three inches
1:24
along the length and then the same at
1:26
the other end
1:27
and then turn it over so that you've got
1:29
the right side facing up
1:32
and fold all the way along the length
1:36
okay so either end where you've got your
1:38
little
1:39
hems pressed you haven't sewn anything
1:42
you've just pressed them
1:43
leave that open and then pin the two
1:47
pieces of fabric together you're pinning
1:49
your edges together
1:51
and you're going to do that all the way
1:53
along so remember that we've left
1:56
two inches at the end not fastened
1:58
together
1:59
so we're going to work your way along
2:01
you'll see i've used pins for half of it
2:02
and clips for half of it so it doesn't
2:04
matter how you hold them together as
2:06
long as you're holding them together
2:07
then when you get to the other end
2:09
you're going to find your pressed edges
2:11
again
2:12
and you need to measure about two inches
2:16
they're not exact measurements it's only
2:17
so you've got space to work
2:20
and mark where you're going to sew to
2:22
again
2:23
and you're going to sew all the way
2:25
along that edge
2:26
so take it over to your machine if
2:28
you're using a machine if you hand sew
2:29
these that's absolutely fine it's just
2:31
going to take you longer
2:33
move yourself along until you've got a
2:35
good couple of inches
2:37
and then start sewing
2:40
so you're going to sew a little way
2:43
reverse to make sure it doesn't come
2:45
undone
2:46
and then sew all the way along the
2:47
length
2:49
just take your time work your way along
2:51
get all your clips and your pins out the
2:53
way
2:54
make sure your edges are staying
2:55
together and keep going
2:58
i'm not going to say until you get to
2:59
the other end because remember we're not
3:01
going all the way to the other end
3:03
so keep going until you get to a couple
3:06
of inches from the end
3:08
you'll see your pressed hems and then
3:11
you're going to reverse
3:12
and finish off at the end again it's
3:15
just so it doesn't come undone take it
3:18
out the machine
3:20
and then we're going to have to turn our
3:23
tube out the right way round
3:25
so at the moment the right side is on
3:28
the inside
3:29
and we've got those two open bits at
3:31
either end
3:33
so if you've got a thing to turn tubes
3:35
out one of those devices that you can
3:36
buy great
3:38
if not remember we're doing it all on a
3:39
budget here just find yourself a safety
3:42
pin
3:43
clip it in one end and feed
3:46
that end into the tube and the reason
3:48
you've put a safety pin on is so that
3:50
you can feed that safety pin all the way
3:52
through
3:52
you can feel it with your fingers and
3:55
you can just push it through
3:58
so you can keep pushing it pulling it
4:00
with one hand pushing it with the other
4:02
and keep pushing the other end through
4:05
and work your way all the way along
4:08
until you get that safety pin
4:10
out the other end and then once you
4:12
reach the other end
4:14
you'll be able to just pull that safety
4:15
pin
4:17
and turn it the right way out and then
4:20
take your safety pin away
4:21
and that was just a tool and now you've
4:24
got a tube of fabric
4:28
it's all ready to be your scrunchie okay
4:32
but remember we've got it open at either
4:34
end and so that's what we're going to
4:36
deal with
4:37
now we're going to take either end of
4:40
the tube
4:41
that's six inch length and we're going
4:43
to sew the two of them together
4:46
so you want the right sides facing each
4:48
other
4:49
and you want to make sure you haven't
4:51
twisted the tube as you do this
4:54
it's really easy to twist the tube and
4:56
make sure you don't
4:57
and then you're just going to pin those
4:59
edges together
5:04
and not surprisingly we're then going to
5:06
sew them together
5:09
so this will mean that you have actually
5:11
formed a ring
5:12
with your tube ready to make your
5:16
scrunchie
5:18
i'm just going to sew along that seam
5:22
and as you can see we've made a ring now
5:25
and we've made sure that we haven't
5:27
twisted the tube
5:33
so just take it over to the machine or
5:35
hand sew it if that's what you're doing
5:37
and once again you need a little bit of
5:39
reversing to start with
5:41
so you go forwards reverse and then sew
5:44
along your seam
5:47
just means it won't come undone that's
5:48
not what you want later on when you're
5:50
wearing it
5:54
just work your way steadily along
6:00
and then once you get to the other end
6:03
you're going to reverse
6:07
again just to make sure it can't come
6:09
undone
6:13
and then remove it from the machine cut
6:14
off your threads
6:19
and you're going to be ready to start
6:21
adding your elastic
6:23
so once you've got it out of the machine
6:26
you can see you've got that seam
6:27
just pull either side and it'll
6:29
disappear inside your tube
6:32
but we've left a first nice hole that we
6:35
can now feed our elastic through
6:38
so get your piece of elastic and get
6:40
your trusty safety pin
6:43
and pop it through one end
6:48
and then through that hole you're just
6:50
going to feed it in
6:51
and again you're using the safety pin so
6:53
you can feel it
6:54
all the way along so just keep feeding
6:57
it round
6:58
making sure that you hold on to the
7:00
other end of the elastic the last thing
7:02
you want is that disappearing inside
7:04
so we want to get to the point where
7:06
we've both ends of the elastic poking
7:08
out the hole that we've got left
7:10
so once it's all the way around
7:14
you'll probably have to pull your fabric
7:16
a little bit and adjust it so you can
7:17
get it away
7:19
now you've got your two pieces of
7:20
elastic your two ends of your elastic
7:22
should i say
7:24
and you just need to overlap them
7:28
like that and
7:31
we're going to sew them together so i
7:33
recommend putting a pin in because as
7:35
you go to the machine this is all
7:36
going to try and move and it's all going
7:38
to be a little bit
7:40
fiddly so just secure them with a pin
7:43
or a clip and then sew it
7:47
now there's lots of different ways you
7:48
can sew these two ends together
7:51
i generally form a box so on the square
7:54
where they're overlapped
7:57
run a seam down one side making sure
8:00
you've reversed
8:01
to start with so that it can't come
8:03
undone
8:05
and then go across the elastic at one
8:08
end of your little
8:10
overlap as you can see i've had to turn
8:12
the scrunchie
8:14
and run across there and then again
8:17
turn through another 90 degrees and go
8:20
along the other side
8:22
of the elastic
8:28
and then you're going to go back across
8:30
your elastic to where you started
8:33
and you've basically just formed a
8:34
little box so every time you turn it
8:37
remember make sure your needle
8:38
is in the elastic to hold it in place
8:40
while you've lifted the foot
8:42
and remember to reverse at the end you
8:45
really don't want your elastic coming
8:46
undone later
8:47
so if you're doing this by hand i
8:48
suggest you do a similar technique
8:51
just doing it by hand to make sure there
8:53
are plenty of stitches holding that
8:54
elastic
8:58
and now you'll find you've got something
8:59
looking like a scrunchie
9:01
but we've still got a big hole so
9:05
we're going to remember that we pressed
9:08
those seam allowances
9:09
so it's going to naturally go where we
9:11
want it to go
9:12
i recommend you look where your two
9:14
seams are
9:15
match them up making sure those little
9:20
hems are folded in
9:22
and put a pin in hold that in place
9:27
and then you can work either side of
9:29
that put a couple of pins in or a couple
9:32
of clips on
9:33
just to hold those edges together and
9:36
then we're going to sew that
9:37
shut you have a choice here where you
9:40
could use
9:41
a slip stitch or a ladder stitch some
9:42
people call it and sew the two edges
9:45
together
9:46
invisibly that's probably the tidiest
9:49
way of doing
9:50
this but if you're in a hurry you could
9:53
do like i've done here
9:55
which is just run along that seam edge
9:58
with the machine
10:00
so the choice is yours a nice little
10:02
ladder stitch to make it invisible
10:04
or as i'm doing here take the whole
10:07
thing to the machine
10:09
and run a little seam along the edge and
10:11
i do mean along the edge you're going to
10:13
go right along the edge just making sure
10:15
you catch both edges
10:17
but as close to the edge as you think
10:19
you can go
10:20
again reverse it either end to make sure
10:23
it holds it in place and doesn't come
10:25
undone
10:31
and you're going to have completed your
10:33
scrunchie
10:38
so whether you've done it on the machine
10:40
or you've done it by hand that's the
10:41
last of the sewing
10:45
so make sure you clip off any threads
10:49
so that it's all tidy
10:52
and then there's only one little thing
10:53
left to do you can see we've got that
10:55
seam on the outside there
10:58
we want our seam really to be on the
11:00
inner side of the scrunchie
11:02
so just pull it through so that the seam
11:05
lies
11:05
on the inside of the circle it's just
11:09
going to give you a really nice edge
11:10
when it's in your hair
11:11
it's not going to be any seam out there
11:13
for people to see really
11:15
and there you go you've completed your
11:17
scrunchie well done
11:18
you can make as many as you like make
11:20
them bigger make them smaller
11:23
and you can see when you're not wearing
11:24
it because of the size you made it
11:26
fits nicely on your wrist so when you
11:28
want to take your hair down
11:30
just pop it on your wrist and then
11:31
you've got it available to put back in
11:32
your hair when you want
11:35
so i hope you've enjoyed this video and
