Did you know there's a place in France
0:02
where thousands of people have died and
0:03
no one even knows about it? You're
0:05
watching Wild but True with Malcolm
0:07
Walker. If you guess the catacombs of
0:09
Paris, you'd be right. But if you think
0:11
you know all about the catacombs, then
0:12
think again. Because while it's true
0:14
that over 6 million people have died
0:16
here, there's a lot more to this story
0:18
than meets the eye. Welcome back to the
0:20
channel. Today we reexploring the
0:22
scariest parts of the catacombs of Paris
0:24
that even locals do and know about. If
0:27
that sounds like a scary adventure, then
0:29
make sure to like this video and

0:33
it. In case you don't already know,
0:35
catacombs of Paris are an underground
0:37
tunneling maze system where over 6
0:39
million people have died. It started out
0:42
as a quarry for limestone back in the
0:43
18th century. But soon after, they
0:46
started finding bones underground, which
0:48
meant only one thing, gold. And bones
0:51
were used as a building material back
0:53
then. So they expanded the catacombs by
0:55
digging further and further underground.
0:58
Eventually they hit water and the
1:00
project was abandoned. But that didn't
1:02
stop the dead from piling up. In 1785,
1:06
the Parisians started using the
1:07
catacombs as an illegal cemetery. And
1:10
that's when things got real ugly. Over
1:13
the next few decades, the government
1:15
tried to crack down on the catacombs
1:17
several times. But the tunnels were so
1:19
extensive and the entrances so well
1:22
hidden that it was nearly impossible to
1:24
find them all. This meant that people
1:26
could keep dying in the catacombs
1:28
without anyone knowing about it. And to
1:30
this day, some parts of the catacombs
1:32
are so remote that even locals don't
1:34
know about them. These areas are filled
1:36
with bones and the smell of death, and
1:38
it's hard to imagine how anyone could
1:40
have died here. But it's important to
1:42
remember that these tunnels weren't
1:44
always used for nefarious purposes. In
1:47
fact, for a lot of the 19th century,
1:49
they were used as a sort of escape
1:51
tunnel. Whenever there was a riot or an
1:54
uprising, the people of Paris would flee
1:56
to the catacombs and hide in the tunnels
1:58
until things settled down. This is how
2:00
many of the bones got down there in the
2:02
first place. It wasn't until World War
2:04
II that the catacombs were finally used
2:06
for their intended purpose, a mass
2:08
grave. The Germans rounded up all the
2:11
Jewish people in Paris and brought them
2:12
to the catacombs to be executed. They
2:14
also brought in trucks full of dead
2:16
bodies from the concentration camps and
2:18
dumped them in the catacombs. It's
2:19
estimated that over 25,000 people were
2:22
killed in the catacombs during World War
2:23
II. Since then, the catacombs have been
2:26
used as a museum and a memorial. But
2:29
there's still so much to learn about
2:31
what happened here. That's because a lot
2:33
of the catacombs are still undiscovered.
2:36
As recently as 2019, archaeologists
2:39
found a new section of the catacombs
2:40
that no one knew about. Was filled with
2:42
bones and artifacts from the 18th
2:44
century. It's amazing to think that
2:46
after all this time, we still don't know
2:48
everything about the catacombs. There's
2:50
something else that makes the catacombs
2:51
even scarier than you might think, and
2:54
it has nothing to do with the bones. You
2:55
see, while it's true that over 6 million
2:57
people have died in the catacombs, only
3:00
a small fraction of those deaths have
3:01
been accounted for. Most of the people
3:04
who died here are unidentified. You
3:06
don't know who they are or how they
3:07
died. It's this mystery that makes the
3:10
catacombs so terrifying. We're
3:12
surrounded by the bones of people whose
3:13
names we'll never know. And that's
3:15
really something to think about the next
3:17
time you're in Paris. Just remember, if
3:19
you hear a strange noise or feel a cold
3:21
breeze, it might just be the ghosts of
3:23
the catacombs letting you know that
3:25
they're still here. So, what do you
3:27
think? Did you explore the catacombs of
3:29
Paris? Let us know in the comments
