Welcome back to a new season of Wild but
0:02
True with your host Malcolm Walker. Did
0:04
you know there's a marine mammal so rare
0:06
it's often called the panda of the sea?
0:09
But unlike the panda, its population is
0:11
critically tragically low. Meet the
0:14
vakita, the world's smallest and most
0:16
endangered porpus. There are fewer than
0:18
10 of these beautiful animals left on
0:20
Earth, making them the rarest marine
0:22
mammal we know of. Right. So, where does
0:25
this elusive creature live? Its only
0:28
home is a tiny corner of the world, the
0:30
northern part of the Gulf of California
0:32
in Mexico. This beautiful turquoise body
0:35
of water is the only place you'll find
0:37
them. It prefer the shallow, murky
0:39
lagoons close to the shoreline. You
0:41
might think such a specific habitat
0:42
would keep them safe. But sadly, it's
0:45
the very thing that has put them in
0:46
grave danger.
0:48
The Vikita story is a heartbreaking one.
0:51
They aren't hunted directly. Instead,
0:54
they become accidental victims.
0:56
Fishermen in the Gulf of California use
0:58
large nets called gil nets to catch a
1:01
type of fish called the Tatoba. The
1:03
toteba's swim bladder is highly valued
1:05
in some markets leading to intense
1:07
illegal fishing. These gil nets hang in
1:10
the water like invisible walls. Aikitas
1:12
being similar in size to the swim into
1:15
these nets and can't escape. Can't
1:17
surface for air and they drown. It's a
1:20
silent and devastating threat. For every
1:23
Titoba caught, many other marine
1:25
animals, including the vakita, pay the
1:28
ultimate price. Conservation efforts are
1:30
in a race against time. Scientists,
1:32
local communities, and the Mexican
1:34
government, are working together to save
1:36
the Vakita. They've tried banning gil
1:38
nets in the Vakita's habitat and are
1:40
developing safer fishing gear. They're
1:42
also using acoustic monitoring systems,
1:44
basically underwater microphones to
1:47
listen for the Vakita's unique clicks.
1:49
helping them locate the last remaining
1:51
individuals and protect their core
1:52
areas. There was even an ambitious plan
1:55
to capture some vakitas and move them to
1:58
a protected sea sanctuary. But these
2:01
sensitive animals don't do well in
2:02
captivity, so the focus is now entirely
2:05
on protecting them in the wild. The fate
2:08
of the vakita hangs by a thread. Its
2:11
survival depends on eliminating illegal
2:13
gilnet fishing entirely. It's a huge
2:15
challenge involving international
2:17
cooperation, law enforcement, and
2:20
providing alternative livelihoods for
2:21
local fishing communities. But it's a
2:24
fight we can't afford to lose. Losing
2:26
the Vakita would be more than just the
2:28
loss of a species. It would be a sign
2:31
that we failed to protect our planet's
2:33
most vulnerable inhabitants. The
2:35
Vikita's quiet call for help is echoing
2:37
across the ocean. The question is, will
2:40
we answer in time? Thank you for
2:42
watching. Spreading awareness is a
2:43
crucial step. If you found this video
2:45
informative, please give it a like and
2:47
share it to help tell the Vikita story.
