0:01
good morning and welcome to Midweek
0:03
Insights This is Pastor John from and
0:06
I'd like to welcome you here today Today
0:08
we're going to talk about the
0:11
crucifixion Um this is Holy Week This is
0:14
the week everybody celebrates the death
0:16
burial and resurrection of Christ And
0:19
today I want to focus in on something
0:21
that's in John 19:31
0:25
And we need to look at it if we're going
0:27
to truly understand a few things in
0:31
verse
0:32
31 This is as Jesus dies on the cross It
0:37
says "The Jews therefore because it was
0:39
the preparation that the body should not
0:41
remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day
0:44
for that Sabbath day was an high day
0:47
besought Pilate that their legs might be
0:49
broken that they might be taken away."
0:52
And there's there's a lot of confusion
0:54
out there
0:56
uh because of that statement And to
0:59
understand what that high Sabbath was or
1:02
what that special Sabbath day was
1:04
according to Jewish law every seven
1:07
years they had a a special Sabbath day
1:10
And at that time during the Passover
1:14
anybody who had who owed a
1:17
debt or had become a uh indentured
1:22
servant was supposed to be
1:24
released Uh their debt cleared away and
1:28
they were anything that they had given
1:31
in collateral for the loans or for their
1:34
indentured servitude was to be restored
1:37
to them And if you think about what
1:39
Jesus did on the cross it makes complete
1:42
sense It totally correlates But this
1:48
special Sabbath
1:51
day is important to understand because
1:53
when we're
1:55
looking to completely understand what
1:58
they're saying and all four gospels
2:00
correlate this that Jesus was crucified
2:03
on the preparation of the Sabbath They
2:07
had already had the Passover meal which
2:09
is on the 14th of Nissan the night
2:13
before So when Jesus is crucified they
2:16
have to get him off the cross before
2:18
sundown to be in compliance with the law
2:22
And it says it was a preparation day for
2:27
the next day was a was a special Sabbath
2:31
So the normal Sabbath according to the
2:35
law starts on Friday night at 6
2:38
PM and it runs to Saturday night at 6:00
2:42
p.m
2:45
So we have to take a look at this and
2:49
understand that Jesus rose from the
2:52
dead on Sunday on the first day of the
2:56
week And that understanding this to
3:00
understand that is the Jewish day is
3:03
divided between the night and the day
3:05
and the night comes first and then the
3:07
day So if Jesus rose on the first day of
3:10
the week he
3:12
rose
3:14
between 6:00 p.m on Saturday night and
3:18
6:00 a.m on Sunday morning And it tells
3:21
you that when Mary and the other Mary
3:24
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary when
3:25
the women came to the tomb it was still
3:29
dark outside on the first day of the
3:31
week which meant he rose from the dead
3:34
between 6:00 a.m uh 6:00 p.m on Saturday
3:37
night and 6:00 a.m on Sunday
3:41
morning And so as we're trying to figure
3:45
this out we have to go we have to count
3:48
backwards
3:49
So if he rose on the first day of the
3:51
week and he fulfilled scripture by being
3:53
in the tomb three days and three nights
3:57
we come back He was he was in the tomb
4:00
on the Sabbath which starts Friday night
4:03
at
4:05
6 He was in the tomb the day before that
4:09
Sabbath
4:11
And then he was in the tomb the day
4:14
before that which was the high
4:17
Sabbath which means that he was placed
4:20
in the tomb before
4:23
dusk the day before So if we count it
4:27
back so we have we have he rose from the
4:31
dead sometime between 6:00 p.m and 6:00
4:34
a.m Saturday night 6:00 p.m Saturday
4:38
6:00 a.m Sunday morning
4:40
So we count back from that point three
4:43
days and three nights So he because he
4:46
went into the
4:48
tomb before that Sabbath started So we
4:53
count
4:55
backwards So we go back to Friday that's
4:58
one day Thursday that's Tuesday
5:02
Wednesday evening 6:00 p.m Wednesday
5:05
evening is when he's placed in the tomb
5:08
So he's crucified on
5:10
Wednesday We celebrated on Good Friday
5:15
uh which is a tradition that happened
5:19
uh over the
5:21
years But if you look into John's gospel
5:24
and you look into the other gospels you
5:26
can see he had the Passover meal and
5:29
then the very the very next
5:32
day is the preparation for the Sabbath
5:35
And this is a high Sabbath This is a
5:37
special Sabbath It falls on either one
5:40
of those seven-year
5:41
cycles where all debts are forgiven and
5:44
all indentured servants are released or
5:48
it falls during a jubilee year which
5:51
comes around every 50 years where
5:54
everything's reset and they start over
5:58
on that Jubilee year So it's either a
6:01
seven-year cycle or it's on a jubilee
6:05
year And both of those involve the same
6:08
thing There are extra Sabbath days added
6:10
into that week So in that week of
6:13
Jesus's cru crucifixion there are two
6:16
Sabbaths celebrated The special high
6:18
Sabbath and the regular Sabbath And then
6:21
Jesus raises from the dead after the
6:24
regular Sabbath is completed And I
6:28
wanted to share this with you because I
6:29
want you to to really understand this
6:33
because it had to the cru the
6:37
crucifixion had to happen on one of
6:39
those cycles It either happened had to
6:41
happen on a 7-year cycle or it had to
6:44
happen in a jubilee year or it wouldn't
6:47
have been a special Sabbath that year
6:50
And so and it ties in uh directly with
6:54
what Jesus accomplish accomplished on
6:57
the cross He died for our sins that
7:00
we're our sins would be forgiven our
7:03
debt would be
7:04
paid and we would be
7:08
released from the curse of sin
7:11
And so as you go through and you look at
7:13
this if you really open yourself up to
7:17
understanding of exactly what's going on
7:20
in this one particular week this high
7:23
Sabbath week we
7:27
understand how the progression of time
7:29
goes to be able to
7:32
look at when Jesus rose from the dead
7:36
And we have to count back three days and
7:38
three nights to find out when he
7:40
actually went into the tomb And the the
7:42
math only works if he was crucified on
7:45
Wednesday during the day and he was
7:47
placed in the tomb before
7:50
dusk on what we would call Wednesday
7:52
night but is actually for the Jewish
7:55
people it's
7:57
Thursday So I want you to keep that in
8:00
mind this week It could
8:03
be I I'm not saying
8:06
that that your salvation hangs on this
8:11
uh information What I am saying is this
8:14
though If
8:19
we're Oh crap
