The Discipline Of Trusting When It Doesn't Make Sense To Our Finite Minds, Hebrews 11:17-22
6 views
Feb 19, 2025
In our last session, we talked extensively about the discipline of waiting patiently on the Lord, the endurance of the saints. Today we’ll discuss the discipline of trusting when it doesn’t make any sense to us. The believers the writer was addressing were probably wondering why God was delaying in rescuing them from their ongoing persecution. And most of us, if we are being honest want to know the “why” behind the trials we’re facing while they are still ongoing. In today’s presentation, the writer will take on the task of teaching us the discipline of trusting when our finite minds can’t understand the ultimate purpose of God in our trials.

hello and uh welcome back to our study
0:03
of the book of hebrews today uh our
0:05
focus will be chapter 11 again and
0:08
verses 17 to 22.
0:10
now in our last session we talked about
0:13
the discipline of
0:14
waiting on the lord and uh we talked
0:17
about abraham and then we talked about
0:20
isaac and jacob and sarah and how they
0:22
displayed a faith that waited um
0:25
patiently on the lord even when it seems
0:28
as if god wasn't going to act and we
0:31
talked about the fact that these this uh
0:33
these four people the three patriarchs
0:36
and
0:37
on sarah they were looking forward to
0:39
the city of god we talked about
0:42
the fact that they were heavenly minded
0:44
so they didn't allow the things that
0:46
they were going through to consume their
0:48
their uh their thoughts process so they
0:51
were always looking forward to the city
0:52
of god and we talked about that and how
0:54
that is important for us as our
0:56
christians to keep our gaze in heaven to
0:59
keep first the kingdom of god and his
1:01
righteousness because if we don't do
1:03
that and if you look for the the
1:04
temporary benefit of our earthly life we
1:07
will be miserable so the antidote to uh
1:10
being joyful and to be filled and with
1:13
joy is to keep our gaze in heaven and we
1:15
say that that's only possible by the
1:17
spirit of god so today we're going to
1:19
talk about the discipline of
1:22
trusting even when it doesn't make sense
1:24
to us a lot of times we go through on
1:26
trials and we don't understand why uh
1:29
things are are the way they are and we
1:31
don't we don't know and sometimes we
1:33
question the goodness of god so these
1:35
believers were going through persecution
1:38
in the book of hebrews and they were
1:40
probably there were probably times where
1:41
they were like why is god allowing this
1:43
it doesn't even make sense we are
1:45
supposed to be triumphant why are we
1:47
struggling like this and when i say
1:49
trial for a lot of times as believers we
1:51
don't think that um
1:53
part of afflictions and struggling is
1:55
part of the plan of god we think well as
1:57
believers we need to be always um in
1:59
victory and when we when i say victory
2:02
uh we are talking about uh not having to
2:04
struggle like that name it and claim it
2:06
you know there's a there's a certain
2:07
teaching out there
2:08
that that says that uh if you if you're
2:10
a believer in in jesus christ you will
2:13
be prosperous and and that's further
2:16
from the truth because the scripture
2:17
tells us that we we've been appointed
2:19
for suffering we have to share in the
2:21
sufferings of christ in order to also
2:23
share in his glory so in today's session
2:26
we're going to talk about the discipline
2:28
of uh trusting even when he doesn't make
2:30
any sense now again we need to address
2:32
the fact that the believers that the
2:34
writer was addressing were probably
2:36
wondering why god was delaying in
2:38
rescuing them from their ongoing
2:40
persecution
2:41
and most of us if we are honest
2:43
we want to know why uh we have the
2:46
trials that we have we want to know the
2:47
why behind the trials we are facing
2:50
while they are still going so in today's
2:52
presentation uh the writer is going to
2:54
take on the task of teaching or teaching
2:56
us how to walk on by faith in the sense
2:58
that how to trust god even when it
3:01
doesn't make any sense so what i'm going
3:03
to do is i'm going to read hebrews
3:05
chapter 11 verses 17 to 22. so let's go
3:09
to the scripture and i'm reading from
3:11
the esv version now the scripture says
3:14
by faith
3:15
abraham when he was tested
3:18
offered up isaac and he who had the
3:21
promises was in the act of offering up
3:24
his only son of whom he was saved
3:27
through isaac shall you of spring be
3:30
named he considered that god was able
3:33
even to raise him from the dead from
3:35
which
3:36
figuratively speaking he did receive him
3:38
back by faith isaac invoked future
3:41
blessings on jacob and esau and by faith
3:45
jacob when dying blessed each of the
3:47
sons of joseph bowing in worship over
3:50
the head of his staff by faith joseph at
3:54
the end of his life made mention of the
3:56
exodus of the israelites and gave
3:59
directions concerning his bones again
4:02
this is the word of the lord let's take
4:04
it our search and understand what this
4:06
is teaching us today
4:07
so in verses 17 to 19 we're going to
4:10
start with those verses again he says
4:12
by faith abraham when he was tested
4:15
offered up isaac and he
4:18
who had received the promises was in an
4:20
act of offering up his only son of whom
4:23
he was saved through isaac shall you off
4:25
spring be named he considered that god
4:28
was able even to raise him from the dead
4:31
from which figuratively speaking he was
4:34
he did receive him back
4:35
now first it's important for us to read
4:38
the scripture that relates to these
4:39
verses and it's in genesis 22
4:42
verse 1 to 2. now the scripture says
4:45
after these things god tested abraham
4:48
and said to him abraham and he said here
4:51
i am and he said take your son your only
4:55
son isaac whom you love and go to the
4:58
land of moriah and offer him there as a
5:01
burnt offering on one of the mountains
5:03
of which i shall tell you now we need to
5:05
understand that by this time abraham has
5:08
had been tested for many years so his
5:11
knowledge of god his understanding of
5:13
god and his trust in god was also
5:15
growing so he had gotten to a level of
5:18
really trusting god so this was the
5:21
ultimate test of faith for abraham
5:24
but once again we must recall that faith
5:27
comes by hearing and hearing by the word
5:29
of god so it is god again who produces
5:32
the faith in us that pleases him
5:34
according to isaiah 55 verse 10 to 11.
5:37
so it's very important for us to mention
5:39
this at the outset because humans again
5:42
we are not robots and we are not like
5:43
automatons so
5:45
while god is the author of faith in in
5:48
people his word meet resistance our time
5:51
because when we hear the word of god
5:53
sometimes we resist this and i'm sure
5:55
when abraham heard uh the words take
5:58
your son your only son and sacrifice him
6:01
uh in the mountain that i will show you
6:03
he probably thought why this doesn't
6:05
make any sense
6:06
okay but
6:08
god is love we know that so that
6:09
resistance to his will is to overcome
6:12
and they sense eventually triumph in
6:14
faith so a good account that explains uh
6:17
love overcoming our heart of stone is
6:19
that kind of jacob when he wrestled with
6:22
god see jacob eventually realized who he
6:25
was wrestling with and he made the
6:28
following statement he said i won't let
6:29
you go unless until you bless me
6:32
see and the lord answered him what is
6:34
your name at that point jacob had a
6:37
choice right he could pretend again that
6:39
he was esau but he told the truth and
6:42
said his name was jacob the supplanter
6:45
the human engineer because we know that
6:46
jacob always tried to do things in his
6:48
own strength he was always trying to
6:49
like fabricate situations he was always
6:51
trying to be an engineer he was always
6:53
trying to find human solutions to his
6:55
problem but at that moment at that very
6:57
moment he was confronted
6:59
and he said my name is jacob so the
7:02
blessing jacob wanted wasn't material
7:04
possession or prosperity he was already
7:06
rich he had a lot of money he had carols
7:09
he had children he had grown but he
7:11
wanted his identity to change so he
7:14
realized how corrupted his own heart was
7:16
and he wanted god to change his heart so
7:19
the blessing he was begging for was a
7:21
change of his identity and god gave him
7:24
the name what israel
7:25
okay so now you can ask yourself what
7:28
does this have to do with abraham and
7:30
what we are talking about everything see
7:33
the command of the lord was take your
7:35
son
7:36
your only son isaac whom you love
7:40
and and and sacrifice him right so
7:43
abraham probably wrestled with the
7:45
command all night long i don't think he
7:47
just went oh yeah god i'm gonna go and
7:49
do this no he wrestled with it he wasn't
7:52
just something that he was gonna do he
7:53
was wrestling because he goes
7:55
why would god ask me to do this
7:58
but he couldn't conceive why god would
8:00
ask him to do that this is this was the
8:02
child of promise the child through who
8:05
whom god said your or your offspring
8:09
will be named but verse 19 tells us how
8:12
this resistance was overcome the
8:14
scripture says abraham reasoned that god
8:17
could even raise the dead and so in a
8:20
manner of speaking he did receive isaac
8:22
back from the death so that's so
8:25
important to understand see
8:27
i like how the version reads in the niv
8:29
now the niv version is not my favorite
8:31
version to go to but in this particular
8:34
instance i like how they translated that
8:36
portion the scripture says abraham
8:39
reasoned
8:41
he reasoned
8:42
so
8:43
all light while he was thinking about
8:45
this holding that he had heard from the
8:46
lord i'm sure he couldn't go to sleep
8:48
right so the lord granted him the
8:50
ability to reason and to consider the
8:53
power of the god he was serving and
8:55
again the scripture tells us that
8:57
spiritual truths are only discerned by
9:00
those that are filled with the spirit of
9:02
god so i don't think abraham like
9:04
considering that god who raised the dead
9:07
was a thought that came to him through
9:08
human reasoning now it was a
9:10
supernatural revelation a supernatural
9:12
act of god by which god worked in
9:15
abraham both to wield and act according
9:18
to the purpose of god so we need to
9:20
remember that at this time abraham
9:22
didn't have any evidence about a person
9:24
being raised from the dead there was no
9:26
evidence like that so the only way
9:29
abraham could have come to this
9:30
conclusion is only through the spirit of
9:32
god granting him this kind of wisdom so
9:35
again
9:36
faith comes by hearing and hearing by
9:38
the word of god so even when abraham
9:40
didn't know he trusted god
9:42
see he didn't know the outcome but he
9:44
trusted because god granted him the
9:46
ability to reason like that okay so i'm
9:49
saying all this to say that abraham
9:50
couldn't have trusted god without the
9:52
spirit of god working in him so the
9:55
faith that abraham displaced
9:57
displayed was authored by god and god
10:00
was pleased by it and he god said the
10:02
following when abraham went
10:04
and trying to sacrifice asic god stopped
10:06
him and said no do not touch the boy and
10:09
there was a ram that was cut in a
10:11
thicket so abraham used that as a
10:12
substitutionary atonement okay so
10:16
and god said at that moment
10:18
by myself i have sworn declares the lord
10:21
because you have done this and have not
10:23
withheld your son
10:24
your only son i will surely bless you
10:27
and i will surely multiply your
10:28
offspring as the stars out of heaven and
10:31
that's the sand that is on the seashore
10:34
and your offspring shall possess the
10:36
gate of his enemies and in your
10:38
offspring shall all the nations be
10:40
blessed because you have obeyed my voice
10:45
so as a result of abraham's obedience
10:47
you see what happened god makes this
10:50
promise and he tells them because you've
10:51
done this i'll bless you and
10:53
multiply your off spring
10:55
okay and the offspring shall possess the
10:58
gate of his enemies in your offspring
11:00
shall all the nation be blessed
11:02
ultimately christ
11:04
came through this lineage
11:06
and as a result of christ we have been
11:09
blessed today us gentiles have the
11:11
opportunity to be called and to be
11:13
adopted as children of god
11:15
because of this
11:17
because abraham obeyed now again that
11:19
obedience came from the word of god and
11:21
then god is the one that was behind
11:23
everything because faith comes by
11:25
hearing and hearing by the word of god
11:28
now
11:29
again
11:30
i want you to like zero in like on on
11:32
the the phrase because you've obeyed my
11:35
voice because that's so important
11:36
abraham obeyed the voice of god because
11:39
what because god granted him the grace
11:41
to obey and again if you go to isaiah 55
11:44
verse 10 to 11 the scripture says as the
11:47
rain and the snow come down from heaven
11:50
and do not return to it without watering
11:52
the earth and making it burn and
11:54
flourish so that he yields seed for the
11:56
sower and bread for the eater so is my
11:59
word that goes out from my mouth it will
12:01
not return to me empty but will
12:03
accomplish the desire the purpose for
12:05
which i sent it again so it was because
12:09
the word of god went out from the lips
12:11
of god again god doesn't have like hip
12:13
lips it's a figure of speech so the word
12:15
of god went out from the lips of god and
12:18
achieved its desired purpose in abraham
12:21
that is obeying the voice of god and
12:24
carrying the command to offer isaac by
12:27
faith and then again a faith granted by
12:30
god himself
12:32
so the writer in some ways is like
12:34
reassuring his readers in the sense that
12:36
the same way god granted abraham the
12:38
grace of reasoning and trusting god
12:40
the same god who does not change will
12:42
grant them and grant us the ability to
12:45
trust him in the midst of our own trials
12:48
in the midst of their trials and see
12:51
this is a great word of encouragement so
12:53
this is the same god who works we worked
12:55
in abraham that's the same god that's
12:56
available today and these patterns have
12:59
been changed he's the same yesterday
13:01
today and tomorrow the same way he
13:03
granted abraham the ability to resist
13:05
and to trust him he will also grant us
13:07
the ability to resist and to trust in
13:09
the midst of
13:10
our trials when we don't understand
13:12
what's going on so we can trust in him
13:15
we can have faith in him that he's good
13:18
all right
13:19
let's go on to
13:21
verses 20 and 21. the scripture says by
13:24
faith now isaac invoked future blessings
13:27
on jacob and esau and by faith jacob
13:30
when dying blessed each of the sons of
13:33
joseph
13:34
bowing in worship over the head of his
13:36
staff
13:37
your staff
13:38
now we read about these blessings in
13:40
genesis 27
13:42
26-29 and 39-40 so let's let's go and
13:45
read this blessing real quick
13:47
so listen to what isaac says in genesis
13:49
27
13:50
verse 26-29
13:52
then his father isaac said to him come
13:55
near and kiss me my son so he came here
13:57
and kissed him and isaac smelled the
13:59
smell of his garments and blessed him
14:01
and said see the smell of my son is as
14:03
the smell of a field that the lord has
14:06
blessed may god give you of the dew of
14:08
heaven and of the fatness of the earth
14:11
and plenty of grain and wine let people
14:14
serve you and nations bow down to you be
14:17
lord of your over your brothers and may
14:19
your mother sons bow down to you cursed
14:21
be everyone who curses you and blessed
14:23
be everyone who blesses you and then in
14:26
in 39 to 40 we read the following the
14:29
this is how he told what he told esau
14:33
then isaac his father answered and said
14:35
to him behold a whale from the fatness
14:38
of the earth shall your dwelling be and
14:40
away from the dew of heaven on high by
14:43
your sword you shall leave and you shall
14:45
serve your brother but when you grow
14:47
restless you shall break his joke from
14:48
your neck now isaac
14:51
jacob receives a favorable blessing
14:54
while
14:55
esau again receives something not too
14:58
favorable but we need to remember that
15:00
esau was isaac's favorite so isaac he
15:03
didn't order those words in the
15:05
blessings by his own clever mind those
15:07
words were given him by god so he
15:09
trusted the words and passed them on to
15:11
his children so notice that esau didn't
15:14
receive favorable words okay even though
15:16
isaac's our favorite was esau isaac
15:19
couldn't do a thing but obey god's word
15:21
because that was the command so isaac
15:23
trusted that god's judgment on esau was
15:26
righteous even though as a father he was
15:28
hurting
15:29
yet he trusted that god did what was
15:32
right
15:33
so he can change the outcome so he
15:35
trusted even if even though he didn't
15:37
understand he trusted that god is good
15:39
and whatever god does is good
15:42
even though his his heart was probably
15:44
hurting for his son he trusted the word
15:46
of god
15:48
now in the same way we read about
15:49
jacob's blessings to joseph sons in
15:52
genesis 48 on 13-22 let's go to that
15:55
verse
15:56
listen to what the scripture says here
15:58
and joseph took them both that is
15:59
ephraim in his right hand
16:01
toward israel's left hand israel in this
16:04
case is jacob and manasi in his left
16:06
hand toward israel's right hand and
16:09
brought them near him and israel
16:11
stretched out his right hand and laid it
16:13
on the head of ephraim who was the
16:15
younger and his left hand on the head of
16:17
manasseh crossing his hand
16:19
for manasseh was the first firstborn and
16:21
he blessed joseph and said the god
16:24
before whom my fathers abraham and isaac
16:26
worked the god who has been my shepherd
16:29
all my life to this day the angel who
16:31
has redeemed me from all evil bless the
16:34
boys and in them let my name be carried
16:36
on in the name of my fathers abraham and
16:39
isaac and let them grow into a multitude
16:42
in the midst of this the earth when
16:45
joseph saw that his father laid his
16:47
right hand on the head of ephraim it
16:49
displays them and he took his father's
16:51
hand to move it from ephraim's head to
16:53
manasseh's head
16:55
and joseph said to his father not this
16:57
way my father since this one is the
16:59
firstborn but put your right hand on his
17:01
head but his father refused and said i
17:04
know my son i know
17:06
he also shall become a people and he
17:08
also shall be great nevertheless his
17:10
younger brother shall be greater than he
17:13
and his offspring shall be become a
17:15
multitude of nations so he blessed them
17:18
that day saying by you israel
17:21
by you israel pronounced blessings
17:23
saying god make you as ephraim and
17:25
espana say
17:26
thus he put ephraim
17:28
before manasseh then israel said to
17:30
joseph behold i'm about to die but god
17:34
will be with you and will bring you
17:35
again to the land of your fathers
17:37
moreover i've given you i've given to
17:39
you rather than your brothers one
17:41
mountain slope that i took from the hand
17:43
of the amorite with my sword and with my
17:45
bow
17:46
so again we see this happening
17:50
in jacob's um inject with jacob so jacob
17:53
put a frame the younger son ahead of
17:55
manasseh the firstborn so jacob's
17:57
blessings came from the lord and he also
17:59
trusted that god's judgment was good he
18:02
himself was the recipient of such a
18:04
favor as a young man so he understood
18:05
what was going on so joseph tried to
18:08
correct his father but jacob had to tell
18:10
him that the decision came from the lord
18:13
and joseph had to accuse to his father's
18:15
word once again they had to trust god
18:18
even though in their finite minds they
18:20
wanted to put manasseh ahead of ephraim
18:23
he said well god had our friends in mind
18:25
and this account ends with jacob bowing
18:27
in worship over the head of his staff
18:30
so this is again incredible
18:32
after everything that jacob went through
18:34
in his life the last thing we hear is
18:36
that he bowed in worship over the head
18:39
of his staff he finally came to realize
18:42
the goodness the justice the
18:44
righteousness the love of the lord his
18:46
life was was filled with white
18:48
challenges
18:49
yet he ends
18:51
in worship so i want that to be said of
18:53
me that i ended my life in uh ultimate
18:57
uh worship because jacob as we know he
19:00
was he was called a supplanter he went
19:02
through his own engineering trying to do
19:04
things in his own strength but the last
19:06
thing we hear about joseph is he's bowed
19:09
at the head of his staff and worshiped
19:11
that's what happens we go through all
19:14
these things in life and god is building
19:16
our character sometimes we don't
19:18
understand what's going on but
19:19
ultimately we trust him and we trust him
19:22
because he allows us and he grants us
19:24
the faith to trust him so we cannot do
19:26
this on our own it is through the spirit
19:28
strength
19:29
so what do we learn today
19:31
trust even when we don't understand
19:35
now i'm here and i'm saying all these
19:36
things to you because when i go through
19:38
stuff i'm always like why why why
19:42
but one thing that god is trying to
19:43
teach us is listen i am good
19:48
even when it doesn't make sense to you
19:49
trust that my judgment is good
19:52
and what i do is good again god
19:55
ultimately is about his purposes he is
19:57
not here to satisfy me with what i want
20:01
ultimately
20:02
we live for the purposes of god so god's
20:06
ways
20:07
is higher than our ways
20:09
and we he's not here to make us
20:13
happy
20:14
and to make us
20:16
like the i don't even know what to say
20:18
but god is number one to make us holy to
20:20
set us apart
20:22
and ultimately god is here to fulfill
20:24
his purposes not my purposes not your
20:26
purposes but his purposes
20:28
regardless
20:30
of what that may look like in our lives
20:32
it may be hard sometimes but we need to
20:34
trust him because he does what is good
20:36
in his sight we may not think this is
20:39
good
20:40
but ultimately god is sovereign he knows
20:43
what is best for his own purposes
20:46
so we are to trust in the midst of
20:48
our trials and it's it's easier said
20:50
than done and we ask him to grant us the
20:52
strength to trust him all right so today
20:55
we got we we talked about
20:57
the discipline of trusting
21:00
and it's not easy
21:02
it's not easy i'll be the first one to
21:04
admit that
21:05
but i pray that jesus christ through his
21:07
spirit grants us the desire and the
21:10
ability and the strength to trust him in
21:12
the midst of our trials
21:15
have a wonderful evening and i'll see
21:16
you next week thank you
