The Discipline of Contending For The Faith, Hebrews 11:23-31

Feb 19, 2025
Welcome back to our study of the book of Hebrews, today we’ll be looking at Hebrews 11:23-29, and I titled this passage, the discipline of contending. Oftentimes people regard believers in Christ as weak, passive or nice people who lack any backbone. Christianity has been reduced to being nice. But Scriptures ‘depiction of the believer is far from what society or even churches define the Christian to be. In our last session, we talked about the discipline of waiting. Today we’ll see that the genuine believer isn’t passive or weak but a warrior that has been granted through God the power to contend against the viles of the evil one by faith. Gird up your loins.

hello and uh welcome back to our study of the book of hebrews today we're gonna um not finish chapter 11. we're still
0:07
just going to be looking at verses 23-31 and today the title of this study is
0:12
this discipline of contending or boldness of faith so basically last week we talked about
0:18
the discipline of trusting when it doesn't make sense to our finite minds and uh one of the examples that we
0:25
looked at was uh abraham when god told them take your son your only son and then sacrifice him to a
0:32
place where i will show you and how abraham trusted god and his scripture tells us that he reasoned that god could
0:38
raise the dead now we again have to talk about the the letter to the hebrews now in
0:45
this letter the writer is addressing believers of jewish background so they are going through persecution and i'm
0:51
sure they are going through a lot of uh questioning they are probably doubting they are probably asking themselves what
0:56
is going on why we don't understand what's going on so from the beginning of chapter 11 we've
1:01
been seeing that the writer has been talking about the concept of faith and we said that faith comes by hearing and
1:08
hearing by the word of god so faith is a work of god since the god is god who works in in his people to will and act
1:15
according to his own purpose so we've seen we talked about the discipline of faith we talked about
1:21
uh the discipline of trusting when he doesn't make sense to our fine mind and we also talked about um the discipline
1:28
of trusting we talked about abraham and how even though they didn't have the totality of the uh of the um
1:35
the things that we have today they they trusted god even though they didn't understand everything because they were looking forward to the city of god so
1:42
therefore they didn't allow their current situation to kind of cloud their judgment so today we're going to talk
1:47
about the discipline of contending so basically a lot of times when people talk to christians
1:53
christianity has been reduced to being nice or passive
1:58
like the kind of people that you see at um chick-fil-a again this is not a knock on chick-fil-a but when people think about
2:05
christians they think christians are these like nice people that are always polite or very well spoken that is
2:11
further from the truth now there's nothing wrong with being nice but that's not what christianity is so don't reduce
2:17
on christianity to instead of be nice be polite that is not christianity all right so
2:24
scripture depiction of the believer is far from what society or even churches define the christian to be so in our
2:31
last session we talked about the discipline of waiting all right and today we're going to see that the genuine believer isn't passive or weak
2:38
but he's a warrior that has been granted um through god the power to contain
2:43
against the violence of the evil one by faith so god up your lawrence and then we're going to
2:49
uh hebrews 11 verse 23 to 31 and then we're going to try to unpack all this all right so i'm going to read this
2:55
scripture now so scripture tells us in hebrews 11 verse 23
3:01
by faith moses when he was born was hidden for three months by his
3:07
parents because they saw that the child was beautiful and they were not afraid they
3:13
were not afraid of the king's edict by faith moses when he was grown up refused to be called the son of
3:19
pharaoh's daughter choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of god than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin
3:26
he considered the reproach of christ greater wealth than the treasures of egypt for he was looking to the reward
3:34
by faith he left egypt not been afraid of the anger of the king for he endured as seeing him was invisible
3:40
by faith he kept the passover and sprinkled the blood so that the destroyer of the firstborn might not
3:46
touch them by faith the people crossed the red sea as on dry land but the egyptians when
3:53
they attempted to do the same were drowned by faith the walls of jericho fell down
3:59
after they had been encircled for seven days and by faith rahab the prostitute
4:04
did not perish with those who were disobedient because she had given a friendly welcome
4:10
to the spies again this is the word of god so let's try to unpack all these
4:15
again our the study today is about contending and
4:21
having boldness in our faith so in verse 23 we read by faith moses when he was
4:26
born he was he was hidden for three months by his parents because they saw that the
4:31
child was beautiful and they were not afraid of the king's edict so why is the writer mentioning this story here the
4:38
account of moses so the account is given to us in like exodus 2 verse 1 to 10 all right so
4:44
before i actually unpack this if you go to exodus 1 21 we read something very
4:49
crazy about king uh the king of egypt pharaoh he says that every son that is born to the hebrews cast into the nile
4:57
but you shall let every daughter live so there was an edict the king wanted to exterminate all the
5:03
male born hebrews kids so he wanted to kill them all so
5:08
god is sovereign and he ordained that moses be born in a family of believing parents so i need to establish the
5:14
outside because that's important so the king the new king of egypt he had no regard for joseph and what joseph had
5:20
done for the egyptians so he came and he was like you know what i don't care about joseph i don't care about what he
5:26
had done so i don't like his hebrews and i want them killed so kill all the hebrew male born so he told his people
5:34
cast them into the nile now before i even talk about moses mom there were two ladies that were mentioned in the book
5:40
of exodus the midwives they also exuded the kind of faith and boldness that is required
5:46
of the people of god they didn't respect the king's edict so they didn't go ahead because they are the king of egypt
5:52
pharaoh he had told those two hebrews uh those two hebrew midwives to kill
5:57
all the um the male-born uh hebrews but they didn't follow through with it they were like no
6:03
we are more we feared god and so because they feared god they did not obey the
6:09
commands of pharaoh so that's just one example of boldness i just wanted to mention them in the passing because i feel like they are just as important as
6:16
moses mom all right so moses's parent they were facing the same fear that every other jewish parent
6:23
was facing so when moses was born the scripture tells us that because they saw that the child was beautiful some
6:30
versions some versions read fine so i want to read you exodus 2 verse 1 to 10 real quick okay so let's see what exodus
6:36
2 verse 1 to 10 tell us so the scripture says here
6:42
now a man from the house of levi went and took as his wife a levite woman
6:48
the woman conceived and bore a son and when she saw that he was a fine child some other versions really beautiful she
6:54
hid in three months when she could hide him no longer she took for him a basket made of bulrushes
7:00
and doped it with bitumen and pitch she put the child in it and placed among the
7:05
reeds by the riverbank and his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him now the
7:11
daughter of pharaoh came down to bathe at the river while her young woman walked beside the
7:16
river she saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman and she took it when she opened it she saw the child
7:24
and behold the baby was crying she took pity on him and said this is one of the hebrews children then his sister said to
7:31
pharaoh's daughter shall i go and call you a nurse from the hebrew women to nurse the child for you
7:36
and for pharaoh's daughter say to her go so the girl went and called the child's mother and pharaoh's daughter said to
7:42
her take this child away and nurse him for me and i'll give you your wages so the woman took the child and nursed him
7:49
when the child grew older she brought him to pharaoh's daughter and he became her son she named it moses because she
7:55
said i drew him out of the water so this is a crazy circumstance so you
8:01
see again there's nothing like coincidence this is the providence of god all right so again like i said in
8:07
the beginning when the scripture tells us that the child was beautiful meaning moses some versions read fine
8:15
and other versions read like i don't know like there's like different versions but we need to understand what
8:20
this means now the parents of moses they were not afraid of the king's edict so
8:25
they hit him for three months now i don't believe that the word beautiful in that verse means like he was good
8:31
looking that was not the meaning because if that's the case so it almost seems as
8:36
if moses his parents were only interested in the way he looked that's not what he means i mean i think he
8:42
means special or no ordinary child okay so moses was special so there was something about his his birth that was
8:49
probably amazing to his parent and he knew that god had a call on his life so all we know is that god granted them the
8:56
ability to see that moses was favored in his sight and consequently they were filled with boldness and challenged the
9:03
king's edict so this kind of boldness again doesn't come from man's natural abilities this is not
9:09
something that you can muster up or you can fabricate in your own that's not what it is because the scripture tells
9:15
us in romans 1 17 that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of god
9:21
so the only reason why moses's parent could resist the temptation of casting
9:26
moses into the nile is because the lord granted them the ability to do so so
9:31
upon hearing this the readers like we were being given hope because basically that's what the
9:36
writer is trying to do he's showing them listen look at moses's mom parliament here she was given hope she was given
9:44
boldness to the spirit because when she heard the king's edict it was either cast your son into denial or we're going
9:50
to kill you but moses's mom didn't allow the fear to dominate because she looked at the
9:56
command and he was coming from pharaoh so she feared god because god granted her the ability to fear god so she
10:02
preserved moses's life because the scripture tells us he was no ordinary child
10:07
so these people that on the writer was addressing they were being told to give up their trust in christ and to return
10:14
to the old system and practices so and if they refused to accuse the request
10:20
persecution was impending so they were facing this kind of pressure but the
10:25
record of moses is in a way teaching us teaching these people and us today to fully rely on god to give us the same
10:32
boldness to contend for our faith okay so contrary to popular opinion the believer is not a wimp or like we can
10:40
fight or defend himself that's not what we ask as believers okay but one was put his trust in god will
10:46
fight our battles through whatever means he chooses god chooses whatever means in
10:52
in the moses uh instance he uses moses's mom and he also uses pharaoh's daughter
10:58
the daughter of the king who issued the edict god uses her to accomplish his purposes but pharaoh's um
11:05
when moses is parent were given special uh boldness to contend and to say we are
11:10
not going to let this king decide our fate or the fate of our child so we are gonna trust god and do what is best
11:17
so you see that god works in these circumstances so for the readers and for us today is like
11:23
this is the type of faith that we are supposed to be displaying and this faith does not come from just human uh
11:29
manipulation it is a work of the spirit of god so this is written for our sake so that we
11:34
can go back to the scripture and and then call god to his own word and say lord this is what you say that you would
11:40
never leave us nor forsake us and god promises that he will not let us be tried beyond our ability to bear but
11:47
with every temptation he will make a way of escape in moses's mom case he was putting him
11:52
in this basket and his flotation device and setting him on the knife she had to trust god i know
11:58
it wasn't easy for her to do that i mean who want to put your child that was just like three months old on a basket and
12:03
put him in an island and just watch somebody else walk them like this is in like incredibly
12:09
tough to fail to swallow like you know again this is what i say this kind of stuff that we read in scripture
12:15
it doesn't come from humans own uh abilities it is the holy spirit that gives women this type of wisdom all
12:22
right so let's continue so this is verse uh 23.
12:27
in verse 24 to 26 we read the following by faith moses when he was grown up
12:33
refused to be called the son of pharaoh's daughter choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of god than
12:39
to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin he considered the reproach of christ greater wealth than the treasures of
12:46
egypt for he was looking to the reward now to understand what the writers convey to his readers we need to look at
12:52
exodus 2 verse 11 to 15. so let's go to exodus 2 verse 11 to 15 and read this
12:59
now listen to what the scripture tells us one day when moses had grown up he went
13:04
out to his people and looked on their burdens and saw and he saw an egyptian beating a hebrew one of his people so he
13:12
looked this way and that and seen no one he struck down the egyptian and hit him in the saint when he went out the next
13:18
day behold two hebrews were struggling together and he said to the man in the wrong why do you strike your companion
13:25
he answered who made you a prince and a judge over us do you mean to kill me as
13:31
you killed the egyptian then moses was afraid and thought surely this thing is known when pharaoh heard
13:38
of it he sought to kill moses but moses fled from pharaoh and stayed in the land of media and he sat down by a well
13:46
so basically moses uh we saw how moses was saved by god
13:51
that's not a coincidence okay his mom um is mom hit him for three years for three
13:58
months and then later on pharaoh's daughter rescues him from the nile river right so that's this is that's just like
14:04
a very important thing that we need to recall moses name went what a jew from the water according to verse 10 of
14:10
exodus 2. we also need to remember that for a certain period of period of time moses was nursed by his own own mother
14:18
who eventually gave him back to pharaoh's daughter again that in itself is another act of faith
14:23
by his own mother because she received him back and he had to give him up again to pharaoh's daughter
14:28
so as moses was growing up he must have known about his story because later on in exodus he reunites with aaron and
14:35
miriam his siblings so i don't think that he never he ever forgot what his true identity was
14:41
and he was living in the king's palace and was surrounded by comfort plenty
14:46
and an easy life and while his people the jewish nation were still being oppressed and afflicted
14:51
so his own family members were probably afflicted as well so he could have easily chosen to completely
14:57
adopt on the ways of the egyptian but god granted moses the ability to resist
15:02
that temptation and that's what scripture tells us that he chose rather to be mistreated right so as a result we
15:08
read that his love for his people led him to even strike and kill an egyptian
15:13
an action that eventually led him to flee to media because pharaoh wanted to kill him so you see moses chose not to
15:21
enjoy the pleasures of sin the scripture tells us in the sense that he didn't settle for the comfort of the palace he
15:28
was dwelling in he didn't allow that till i consumed him to the point where he forgot about his people okay so
15:33
rather he chose to identify with his savior jesus christ so the writer is clever clever like he
15:39
he could have said that he considered the reproach of god greater wealth but that's not the words that he chose he
15:45
said what the whole scripture is about jesus christ so this passage teaches that teaches us that even though
15:52
christ hadn't yet appeared in the flesh even the ancients like moses knew about
15:58
him by revelation so god granted moses to see the reproach of christ as a
16:03
greater as greater than the wealth of the wealth and temporary pleasures of egypt so
16:08
basically he chose what was right in the sight of god now let me pause it for a second and talk to
16:14
you about moses a little bit now you got to think about it moses grew up in in the house of pharaoh so he was probably
16:21
called they set out by his own people they probably saw him and say well you are not even a hebrew
16:26
so he's he's um he's i would say his loyalty was tested
16:33
and i'm sure in in pharaoh's house they didn't treat him like well they knew his story everybody knew where he came from
16:39
they probably called him they probably didn't want to serve him they probably served him grudgingly they had to
16:45
basically serve him because pharaoh's daughter took care of him so they they probably hated him in that
16:50
palace and his own people probably called a betrayer so just think about that like
16:55
nobody really ever think about moses and how hard his upbringing was to be able to live in a place where he's
17:02
comfortable yet not adopt the comfort and still identify with your people
17:08
the scripture tells us he considered the reproach of christ a greater wealth than the tribes of
17:13
treasures of egypt so basically he didn't allow that to consume him even though he could have just been like listen god put me here for purpose you
17:20
know i'm here i'm enjoying my life i'm not going to worry too much i'm just going to do what i need to do here no he
17:26
didn't allow that to consume him he was always looking to deliver his people because this is
17:31
how god built him he was in his dna because moses was always trying to he
17:36
was always a champion for the oppressed because god built him that way
17:42
and we see that after he killed the egyptian he hid the egyptian descent but people saw it
17:49
and then when when pharaoh found out phil wanted to kill moses so he had to flee he wasn't afraid he fled because
17:56
he had to to go away they would have killed him now that doesn't mean that he was
18:02
uh quote unquote this is also boldness because it took boldness to do what he did all right
18:09
so again the writer was was like talking to people who could have easily identified with the
18:14
judaizers to avoid the persecution the reproach of christ because again he's contrasting these two things together
18:20
he's saying moses could have dent could identify with the with the egyptian but he didn't do that he
18:27
identified with the reproach of christ in the same way the people that were struggling they could have said to themselves
18:33
listen we're just going to play this game we're just going to pretend that we really like this old system and just so
18:38
that we won't be persecuted no so the writer is calling them and us today to say stand strong because it is better to
18:45
identify with the reproach of christ because we talk about the consequences in chapter 10 that if we keep on
18:51
trampling the son of god underfoot there no longer remains any any sacrifice for us so it's a choice but it's costly so
18:59
he's exhausting his readers and us to remain faithful in the midst of persecution to continue to contend for
19:05
the true faith but we must remember that his resistance and boldness are a result of what faith and our faith is granted
19:12
by god so moses example is here to teach us about staying strong
19:18
through the battle staying strong and content for that which is right so it is easy for us to just identify with the
19:25
status quo so that we can avoid the persecution but that is not true faith because the true
19:31
born-again believer will identify with the reproach of christ because he considered that he considers that
19:37
greater wealth than the treasures of egypt now egypt is is usually identified with sin with comfort with that which is
19:44
not good in the sight of god because the reason why we do this is because we are looking forward to the city of god
19:50
because one day there is a kingdom that awaits us and that's what we are looking forward to so therefore we content in
19:56
the midst of all these things all right and then when we go to um
20:03
verse 27 and 28 again this is the same topic and the same concept is contending
20:09
for the faith the scripture tells us by faith he left egypt that is moses not
20:14
been afraid of the anger of the king for he endured as seeing him was
20:19
invisible by faith he kept the passover and sprinkled the blood so that the
20:25
destroyer of the firstborn might not touch him now the same moses that was originally
20:31
rejected by his own people for saving them was the same person god chose to
20:36
save them later on now after 40 years in median moses is called by god to lead him what
20:43
out of egypt so he has to face another pharaoh who is just as hardened as
20:48
the last one he was one of the worst king of egypt ever stubborn right and
20:54
once again moses displays a boldness that can only be attributed to time spain in god's presence again we must ask
21:01
ourselves how was moses so bold as to not being intimidated by the pharaoh's
21:07
anger now the scriptures gives us like the answer to this question it tells us that he persevered as one who sees the
21:15
unseen see the natural eye your eye and my eye can't see what is behind the curtain right the curtain we can't
21:23
but through his faith god granted moses to look forward to what to the city of
21:28
god he knew that there was more to life than what his mere eyes saw so consequently
21:34
boldness was given to moses to resist what evil and contained for the faith
21:40
in the same way i want to bring up a passage here in exodus 6 verse 10 to 13.
21:45
so i want to read you something here we want to find out where moses uh boldness came from listen to the
21:50
scripture so the lord said to moses go in tell pharaoh king of egypt to let the
21:57
people of israel go out of his land but moses said to the lord behold the people
22:03
of israel have not listened to me how then shall pharaoh listen to me for i am
22:09
of it i am of uncircumcised lips but the lord spoke to moses and aaron
22:15
and gave them a charge about the people of israel and about pharaoh king of
22:20
egypt to bring the people of israel out of the land of egypt this is so important this is so important right
22:29
the scripture tells us that what but the lord spoke to moses and aaron and gave
22:34
them what a charge about the people of israel and about pharaoh king of egypt
22:39
to bring the people out of israel out of israel out of the land of egypt see god gave them a charge to speak he
22:48
commanded it in them and that's where their boldness came from
22:53
let me repeat that again this is so important god gave them what they charged to speak
22:59
he commanded it in them and that's where their boldness came from because moses said i'm a man of staggering lips
23:05
stammering lips or i'm circumcised slipped he goes lips he goes if the people of israel won't listen to
23:12
me why would pharaoh listen to me my own people don't want to listen to me and moses understood that he can do it on
23:18
his own and god says he gives them a charge you go and you speak to him and god says
23:25
basically god gives a command and they have no other alternative but to obey the command because
23:32
scripture tells us in isaiah 55 10-11 that god says that he was his word
23:38
will not return to him void but he will accomplish the purpose for which he
23:43
sends it so the charge to moses and and aaron was to speak and they had to obey
23:50
so their boldness came from god not in themselves the boldness that they
23:55
exuded came from god himself because again we say that faith comes by what
24:00
hearing and hearing by the word of god so the charge to speak change
24:06
everything in moses he went from being like scared to like bold because god gave him a charge to speak a command to
24:13
speak and the command coming from god has to be obeyed by the recipient so he had to
24:19
obey it's incredible because god is the one behind everything
24:26
and then we read uh um the scripture tells us in verse 27 by
24:32
faith he left egypt not being afraid of the anger of the king for he endured as
24:37
seeing him was invisible by faith he kept the passover and sprinkled the blood so that the destroyer of the
24:43
firstborn might not touch them see moses endured as one who sees who
24:50
him who is invisible so if you remember in our previous lectures we talked about the believers
24:55
wanting to have a physical experience similar to the one they had in the temple rituals right they wanted to have that
25:01
and jesus we are told is the high priest in the order of melchizedek and he ministers where in the true tabernacle
25:08
erected by god in the heavenly places right so none of the readers and us
25:13
included can see the tabernacle we can see into heaven we can't see it we have no way of seeing this unless god himself
25:19
removes the curtain and allows us into that place just like isaiah where he saw the lord sitting on his throne we don't
25:27
have that experience so but as moses we ought to endure and persevere as one who sees the unseen
25:34
because we have to have what eyes of faith is not something that we can see but we believe it because the word of
25:39
god says it is true so the faith is a faith that is produced by god in us see
25:44
i'm not sure why the writer mentions verse 28 in this chapter and for me i can only speculate as to
25:50
why this is included in this section see the readers and us as well have put our faith in christ and his sacrificial work
25:57
so he is the lamb of god we are told the one that god himself provided to take away what the sins of the world
26:04
so through his blood we are shielded from the wrath of god so that we are not
26:09
what destroyed so i believe the writer inserted this at this perfect at the perfect time because
26:14
in scripture he has been proving that jesus is our passover length and verse it is a great
26:20
reminder for the readers and us that the only way to be saved and shielded from the coming wrath of god is through what
26:26
the sprinkling of the blood of jesus so i i believe he inserts this in here to just create a certain transition he's
26:33
been telling them about boldness and he's giving them the reason for that boldness he goes listen
26:39
this is the only savior we have this is the only lamb of god so there is
26:44
no other way to be saved so you better fight for this faith because this is the only faith that can save you that's the
26:51
only there's no other way there's no other other name under heaven whereby men can be saved by the name of
26:56
christ so he's been talking about contending so therefore he brings this up to show them listen
27:02
moses understood that because he knew that the only way to be saved was by sprinkling of the blood of
27:08
what christ so again the old testament gives us so much insight into the new so
27:15
we should never ever think the old testament is outdated because it is loaded with
27:21
new testament proofs all right and evidences
27:26
now in verse 29 give me a minute let me take a sip of my drink here
27:33
in verse 29 we read by faith the people crossed the red sea are some
27:39
dry land but egyptian when they are tempted to do the same were drowned
27:45
so i believe again he inserted verse 29 for a specific purpose there's only one moses in the scripture
27:52
and all of us aren't going to be remembered as moses was so he was one of the most respected old testament figure
27:59
right so it would have been easy for the readers to say well that's moses i'm not significant like moses no one
28:05
knows where i am and i think the writer was anticipating that so therefore he brings verse 29 see in
28:12
this verse moses is not the only one showing courage under difficult circumstances
28:17
the entire nation of israel was involved in the process yes they were led by moses but they too
28:23
had to have boldness in order to what to walk through the red sea on dry land
28:29
and i think the writer like specifically mentions the egyptian also attempting to do the same and drowning for a specific
28:36
purpose which we'll see soon see in isaiah 55 10 god said that his word will not return to him void but will
28:43
accomplish the purpose for which he was sent she demanded to walk through the red sea was only
28:50
intended for who for the jewish nation the world was not meant for the egyptians this is why when they try to
28:57
go in they died because it reinforces the definition of faith it comes by what hearing and
29:04
hearing by the word of god the people of israel were told to walk through the red sea and they obeyed because it was
29:11
intended for them and it produced boldness from faith that resulted in an
29:16
action walking through the red sea so basically the people collectively showed the kind of boldness that he is
29:22
talking about here they went through the red sea on dry land with a wall of water on the on the right side and another
29:29
water on the left and they walked through the red sea all of them an entire nation i guess it was three million people according to like
29:35
records i'm just saying i may not be right they all walked through it showed courage and boldness contention
29:42
they went through it they contended for their faith because they trusted god right and then the egyptians tried to do
29:48
the same thing and what happened water came down and killed them all because the mandate was only for what the jewish
29:55
nation god said you walked through the red sea he didn't tell the egyptian to do that it was intended for the people
30:01
of god so you see faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of god it has to be
30:08
for you if the word is not intended for you then it's not for you
30:13
so the scripture is telling us here we believe because we cannot manufacture faith and you know just because somebody
30:19
walked on water doesn't mean i'm gonna walk on water right jesus walked on water it doesn't mean that i'm going to
30:25
walk on water so faith is not something that we can manufacture it's from the word of god he is the one
30:31
that produces faith we can't i can't stress this enough because it
30:37
a lot of times people think that we can kind of well we just have to have faith no even
30:43
to content for the faith it has to be ordained by god so we have we need to be listeners we
30:49
need to be in in tune with the spirit of god so we know what his word is saying to us we can't just put scriptures out of
30:55
context and just apply it blindly no
31:00
excuse me so in verse 30 to 31 we read the following
31:06
by faith the walls of jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days
31:11
by faith rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient because she had given a friendly welcome
31:18
to the spice see in verse 30 again the nation's faith is put on display one
31:24
more time see god's word to them was what circled the city seven days and the
31:29
walls will fall so they obey the instructions of the lord because the word was intended for them so they
31:35
bravely walked around the city and did it according to the word of god so now
31:41
what i find very peculiar is the mentioning of rahab who was not a jew but a gentile right and not only that
31:48
but she had another thing going against her she was a prostitute and the writer makes sure he puts that
31:54
up there he goes by faith rahab the prostitute did not perish see
32:00
god inserted this this woman in the hall of faith and let's see the release first more
32:06
more like closely i want i want to kind of look at it like closely see rehab and the entire city of jericho
32:13
they had heard what had happened to the egyptians because news were new news spread right they didn't have phones
32:19
they didn't have facebook but it was something gigantic because it was the exodus of more than 3 million people and
32:26
i'm sure it was spread out people knew about it so people were a lot of people were in fear they were dreading the people of god so
32:33
i don't think like the spies that came to the city of jericho were aware of that until rehab said so
32:40
so you can imagine how much more encouraged they became after rahab's report
32:45
so the thing is this why would an insignificant gentile prostitute be included in this argument
32:52
why do you think the writer brings that up here she she could have been disobedient
32:58
and she could have rejected the people of god but the lord commanded her commanded her to welcome the spies
33:04
because she showed her his favor and according to isaiah 55 10 again the
33:10
scripture says my my word will not return to me void so she was not disobedient and obeyed the
33:16
word of god and as a result she was shielded from god's wrath against the city of jericho her boldness came from
33:23
god's word by faith again if his point wasn't clear then it is clear now
33:28
rahab's faith is a demonstration of what god's grace this is not something that she can manufacture because number one
33:36
rehab was not a jew two she was a prostitute three she was a woman i mean
33:41
yet she trusted the word of the lord which means the grace of god through his word
33:47
in her life was not in vain so what is the writer trying to teach his readers see rahab had everything
33:55
going against her she did not know the spice she could have been discovered and killed by her
34:00
own people but in spite of all things against her she was bold through the
34:05
spirit of god working in her by the word of god to do that which was right in the
34:11
sight of god let me repeat that again she could have been discovered she did not know the spies
34:17
and she could have been killed by her own people but in spite of all things
34:22
against her she was bold through the spirit of god
34:27
working in her by the word of god to do that which was right in the sight of god
34:33
and we can only attribute her boldness to the working of the word of god in her
34:39
through faith again what is he trying to teach us in the pa in this passage faith comes by hearing and hearing by
34:46
the word of god and the faith that we have in god is a faith that is bold and that contains it's not the faith that is
34:52
weak it's not the faith that that is just like i was mentioning
34:58
uh chick-fil-a because we are not told to be nice we are told to be bold to be
35:03
loving but to contend for that which is right because our faith is in god the creator
35:12
so he is the one that energizes us he is the one that gives us the boldness through the spirit of god because the scripture says we have not received the
35:19
spirit of what timidity but a spirit that is strong and that is powerful that is of a sound mind
35:27
so that boldness is what carries us through the difficult times they are going to come
35:32
we are going to be tested by the fire that's just going to happen open your mouth these days and talk
35:38
about the lord jesus and you see how much abuse you get it was so interesting like
35:43
a couple of days ago i saw that people were mad at joe rogan because uh joe rogan made some i guess
35:50
they say that he had a guest on his show that made some false that gave some misinformation about kobe 19 and people
35:56
were all mad at him and they and some some famous singers artist neil young i
36:01
guess was pulling this music off spotify because he told them they had to pick between him
36:07
and joe rogan and i saw the whole thing i was laughing because to me it's like this joe rogan is the same joe rogan
36:13
that made some uh comments about the scripture he says something some things about the bible
36:18
that were not true misinformation all over the places and no one said the word everybody was fine with it they were
36:25
kind of oh yeah that's cool that's free speech freedom of speech and that's you know as long as she doesn't hurt the
36:30
agenda but now that he's talking he said some things about um um
36:35
they were all bent out of shape people are canceling him everywhere i think this is funny like that which really
36:41
matters which is the word of god is being completely disregarded see joe rogan had no qualm about talking
36:47
negatively about the bible people may have a problem with it but as a christian as as christians we need to
36:53
speak up and not be afraid of this all right so we have we we are living in a very hostile world
36:59
they don't like us they're not gonna like you you can try to be friends with the world they're gonna hate you anyway
37:04
you can try to be nice trying to be polite that's not gonna get you anywhere i'm not saying go out and be
37:10
one of those um very obnoxious christians that's not what i'm saying but we need to stand
37:16
strong in what we believe because this is the truth and this is what actually saves those people so why hide under the
37:23
guise of oh you're trying to be nice that is fake and that's not gonna cut it
37:29
all right so i hope this helps and uh look forward to seeing you again next week thank you
