The Jehovah Witness Heresy Part 1: about Colossians 1:15 He Is The firstborn of all creation

Feb 19, 2025
I had an interesting exchange with a gentleman from the Jehovah witness community who claimed that the Bible never taught that Jesus was God. And He based his claims on verses that he either didn't understand or pulled out of context. One of the verses that he quoted was colossians 1:15 in which the Scripture says that Jesus is the firstborn of all creation. According to the gentleman, Jesus was also created and therefore can't be worshiped since He isn't God. So in today's presentation, I'll be refuting this heresy and we'll dig this Scripture to understand what Paul the apostle was communicating

hey what's going on guys this is taiva
0:02
types.com and today is sunday and you
0:04
know on sundays i don't usually do
0:06
videos
0:06
of anything but today was a special day
0:09
because i wanted to do this because i
0:10
felt like it was important
0:12
so yesterday i had an interesting
0:14
exchange with
0:15
a jehovah witness a young man who's a
0:17
jehovah witness
0:19
and we exchanged about the deity of
0:22
christ and he told me basically that he
0:23
doesn't believe that
0:24
jesus is god and before i actually will
0:28
go into the details let me give you the
0:30
background so my son's best friend
0:32
luke sent me a text message that was
0:34
like almost like eight nine ten days ago
0:36
and he was telling me that he was having
0:38
a conversation with one of his friends
0:40
and that friend of his also had a
0:42
conversation with the jehovah witness
0:44
a guy that told him that jesus wasn't
0:47
god and he misquoted some scriptures
0:50
and used those scriptures to prove his
0:52
point so i asked for a meeting i said
0:54
hey let's let's meet
0:56
so i met with a jehovah's witness kid
0:58
yesterday
0:59
and uh i came out of that meeting
1:02
understanding
1:03
the the signs of the time it's
1:05
interesting because i've been reading
1:06
uh first john four and at first john the
1:09
entire top
1:10
chapter and last week i actually did uh
1:14
first john chapter four verse one
1:16
through six when john talks about
1:18
do not believe every spirit but test it
1:20
and he said in that chapter
1:21
that uh uh any spirit that does not
1:24
acknowledge
1:24
that jesus that john is sharing is not
1:27
from god
1:28
so basically this kid was basically
1:32
acknowledging
1:33
portions of jesus character not a
1:34
totality of his character
1:36
and and jesus himself says say that he
1:39
is god
1:40
so this guy again pulled out some
1:42
scriptures and the thing that these
1:43
people do is they give you like one
1:45
verse
1:46
and they don't understand the full
1:47
context and they don't understand the
1:49
entire passage so i felt like
1:50
it was important for me to to expose
1:53
this heresy here this morning and i'm
1:55
gonna tell you exactly
1:56
what verse that he read to prove his
1:58
point and i'm gonna show you
2:00
how to go about understanding what the
2:02
verse is saying because
2:03
scripture tells us to correctly divide
2:06
the word of god
2:07
lest we fall into error and that's what
2:09
these people do all
2:10
heresies begin because somebody
2:13
misinterpreted the scripture
2:15
and i don't claim to know the scripture
2:18
i don't claim to be
2:19
oh this guy that knows everything but
2:21
now you have to be careful
2:23
whenever you come across a scripture
2:25
that you don't understand
2:26
first thing you read it and i ask the
2:28
law for confirmation and then
2:29
look for other sources sure sources like
2:32
when i when i was studying this passage
2:34
i went through to see what ashes will
2:36
say about it
2:37
a couple of other reputable teachers
2:39
that you know you can trust
2:40
okay because this is a collective thing
2:42
so i'm gonna
2:43
i'm gonna first talk about the scripture
2:45
that he he quoted
2:46
and then we are going to see why what he
2:49
said
2:50
was not right and why jesus is god
2:53
so he quoted colossians 1
2:56
verse 15 the scripture says he is
3:00
the image of the invisible god the
3:03
firstborn of all creation
3:05
now when this kid was talking to me all
3:07
he zeroed it on was the firstborn of all
3:09
creation so basically according to his
3:12
knowledge
3:12
the firstborn of all creation means that
3:15
jesus is also a created
3:17
being that created all things so
3:20
based on the jehovah witness uh
3:22
understanding of this verse
3:23
it means that jesus christ is the first
3:26
person to be created
3:27
and then he created the other things
3:29
baloney
3:30
okay and we're gonna go into why what
3:32
they believe is just completely
3:34
absolutely horrendous so i'm gonna go
3:37
through that so before i actually
3:39
give you the reasons i'm gonna give you
3:42
uh
3:42
um basically um we want to know how to
3:45
refute
3:46
this heresy like how do we correctly
3:48
divide the word of god so that we don't
3:49
fall into this kind of error
3:51
so before i actually get into it we need
3:54
to understand
3:55
why paul wrote this letter he was
3:58
writing to people the church at kalashi
4:00
okay and he was trying to show the
4:02
preeminence of jesus christ so
4:04
when he saved those things in colossians
4:06
1 verse 15 they
4:07
exactly understood what paul was trying
4:09
to say and to give
4:11
you more depth to these i want to read
4:14
um
4:15
deuteronomy 21 because the first thing
4:17
that we need to do is we need to
4:19
understand what first born of all
4:20
creation means
4:22
okay if you don't understand that it's
4:24
going to be hard for us to understand
4:25
this passage
4:26
and before i actually go into what the
4:28
firstborn of our creation means
4:30
we also need to understand what paul
4:32
says first he says he is the
4:34
image of the invisible god he is the
4:37
image he is not made
4:38
in the image of god the scripture didn't
4:40
say he's made in the
4:42
image of god because we are made in the
4:43
image of god right
4:45
but according according to the scripture
4:48
jesus
4:49
is the image of god
4:52
okay and then the scripture says he's
4:54
the firstborn of all creation
4:56
so let's go to deuteronomy 21 verse 15
4:59
to 17 to understand
5:00
what firstborn of all creation means
5:03
so in deuteronomy 21 the scripture says
5:06
if a man has two wives the one loved and
5:09
the other unloved
5:11
and both the loft and the unloved one
5:13
have borne him children
5:14
and if the firstborn son belongs to the
5:16
unloved then on the day when he assigns
5:18
his possessions as an inheritance to his
5:20
sons he may not
5:22
treat the son of the beloved as the
5:24
firstborn in preference to the son of
5:26
the unloved
5:27
who is the firstborn but he shall
5:28
acknowledge the firstborn
5:30
the son of the unloved by giving him a
5:32
double portion
5:34
of all that he has he is the first fruit
5:37
of his strength the right of the first
5:40
one is his
5:41
so this is what the scripture says and
5:42
we need to understand what that means
5:44
based on the scripture the first born
5:46
son had this right
5:48
okay the right of the first ball so so
5:50
it's a status thing
5:51
he had preeminence the firstborn right
5:54
that's what the scripture says
5:56
so jesus being the first born of all
5:58
creation doesn't mean that he was
6:00
created but he had
6:01
the status of the firstborn that's what
6:04
the scripture is saying he has
6:05
preeminence he's
6:06
supreme over all things it's a status
6:10
that he has he's a right that he has
6:12
he's not the firstborn
6:14
creator that's not what he means is his
6:16
status he has the status of the
6:18
firstborn
6:19
because he has preeminence over all
6:21
things now i'm gonna go to first samuel
6:23
one and i'm gonna read you something
6:24
here to kind of
6:25
explain this a little a little bit
6:27
better so let's do that real quick
6:29
we're gonna go the first time yet i'm
6:30
gonna read uh
6:32
the breath of samuel okay so i'm gonna
6:34
give you a quick background so
6:36
uh el cana had two wives one was uh
6:40
hannah she couldn't have any children
6:41
and penny now had children now listen to
6:44
this scripture
6:45
now this man used to go up year by year
6:47
from his city to worship and to
6:48
sacrifice the lord of hosts at shiloh
6:51
where the two sons of eli hofney and
6:53
phineas
6:54
were priests of god on the day when
6:56
elkanah sacrificed he would give
6:58
portions to penina his wife and to all
7:01
her sons and daughters
7:02
but henna he gave a
7:05
double portion because he loved her
7:09
though the lord had closed her womb
7:12
okay let me stop here for a second we
7:15
just read in deuteronomy that
7:17
the let's let me read this around me
7:19
again 15. if a man has two wives
7:21
the one loved and the other unloved and
7:23
both the loved and the unloved have
7:25
borne him children
7:26
and if the firstborn son belongs to the
7:27
unloved then on the day when he assigns
7:29
his possessions as an inheritance to his
7:31
sons
7:32
he may not treat the son of the lord as
7:34
the firstborn in preference to the son
7:36
of the unloved who is the firstborn
7:37
but he shall acknowledge the firstborn
7:39
the son of the unloved
7:41
by giving him a double portion of all
7:43
that he has
7:44
for he is the first fruit of his
7:46
strength the right of the first one is
7:48
his
7:48
now elkanah it seems like elkanah
7:52
is not obeying deuteronomy okay because
7:55
even though samuel was not even
7:57
conceived yet because
7:59
eventually hannah had a child named
8:01
samuel and she said because i've asked
8:03
the lord of him
8:04
right elkanah gave his wife hannah
8:07
a double portion this seems to me as if
8:10
the passage is giving us a preview of
8:12
jesus
8:13
elkanah was technically not obeying
8:15
deuteronomy 25
8:17
21 verse 15 to 19. on the surface it
8:19
seems as if he's not obeying what the
8:21
verse is saying
8:22
but what the lord was communicating
8:24
indirectly through elkanah's choices was
8:26
the preeminence
8:27
of samuel the prophet over his own
8:29
natural brothers
8:30
though samuel didn't yet exist in the
8:33
eyes of the world in god's mind
8:35
samuel had pre-eminence over his
8:37
brothers this is why
8:39
elkanah kept giving her the double
8:41
portion
8:42
this is a prototype of the person of
8:44
christ okay so this is a prototype a
8:46
prototype is
8:47
something to give us a picture of what
8:49
christ was going to be like
8:50
so samuel had pretty much
8:54
preeminence and jesus has preeminence
8:57
okay is a status thing is not because
9:00
he is first born of over creation means
9:03
that he was he was created that's not
9:05
what he means he has
9:06
everything to do with status he has the
9:09
right of the first one which is he's
9:11
supreme over
9:12
all things okay now let's go back to
9:14
colossians one
9:15
and you're gonna see something
9:16
interesting here because
9:19
you can't read colossians 1 15 without
9:21
reading what comes next
9:22
okay paul says in verse 16 he gives the
9:25
reason why jesus christ is the firstborn
9:28
of all creation
9:29
basically he gives the reason why jesus
9:32
has
9:32
status that status of the firstborn he
9:35
gives us a reason
9:36
because we we understand that first born
9:38
means that he has the status of the
9:40
firstborn
9:41
okay so let's see what jesus jesus why
9:44
let's see why jesus has the status of
9:46
the firstborn
9:47
if you read verse 16 and 17 of
9:49
colossians
9:50
first colossians 1 the scripture says
9:53
for by him
9:54
all things were created in heaven and on
9:57
earth visible
9:58
and invisible whether thrones or
10:01
dominions
10:02
or rulers or authorities all
10:05
things were created through him and for
10:07
him and he
10:08
is before all things and in him all
10:10
things
10:11
hold together in other words he
10:14
created all things and he himself he's
10:17
not created
10:18
let me say that again in in in other
10:21
words
10:22
jesus created all things but he himself
10:25
is not a creation because
10:28
he created he created all things he has
10:31
supremacy
10:32
the firstborn right because he created
10:35
all things so the triune god
10:38
exists in three persons god the son
10:42
god the father and god the holy spirit
10:44
so when the scripture says
10:45
the word became flesh the second person
10:48
of the trinity person of the trinity
10:50
added the humanity to his divine nature
10:53
basically
10:54
the triune god existed for all eternity
10:57
but then when jesus christ was born they
10:59
added the human
11:00
god the man that's what this means so if
11:03
you go to colossians 1 15
11:04
this the scripture says jesus is the
11:07
image of the invisible god
11:08
okay the scripture didn't say that he
11:11
was made in the image of god
11:13
but rather he is the image of god okay
11:15
in other words
11:16
we should not look to anybody else but
11:19
we should look
11:20
to jesus because he is the image
11:24
of god and if you go to philippians 2
11:26
listen to what the scripture says here
11:28
i just want to read you this
11:32
um have this mind among yourselves which
11:35
is yours in christ jesus
11:36
who though he was in the form of god did
11:39
not count
11:40
equality we've got a thing to be grasped
11:44
but he emptied himself doesn't mean that
11:46
he lost his attribute because
11:48
that's not what that says some people
11:49
misunderstand the scripture also
11:51
well the scripture says but he emptied
11:53
himself by taking the form of a servant
11:56
being born in the likeness of man and
11:58
being found in human form
12:00
he humbled himself by becoming obedient
12:02
to the point of death
12:03
even death on the cross okay the
12:06
scripture doesn't say that he lost his
12:08
attributes he still was fully god and
12:10
fully man
12:11
okay and the reason why jesus had to
12:13
become like us so that he can identify
12:15
with us so that he could be the perfect
12:16
sacrifice for us now if you go to
12:19
hebrews 1 let's read the scripture
12:20
what is the hebrew hebrews 1 says let's
12:23
read that
12:24
let's read it again long ago at many
12:26
times and in many ways
12:28
god spoke to our fathers by the prophets
12:30
but in his last days
12:31
he has spoken to us by his son whom he
12:33
appointed
12:34
the air of all things through whom also
12:37
he created
12:38
the whole world he is the radiance of
12:40
the glory of god and the exact
12:43
imprint of his nature and he upholds the
12:46
universe
12:46
by his powerful word okay and i'm gonna
12:49
skip a little bit and go
12:50
all the way down to verse seven
12:54
this now verse actually verse six
12:56
actually no one let me read the entire
12:57
thing
12:58
for to which of the angels did god ever
13:00
say you are my son today i've begotten
13:02
you
13:03
or again i'll be to my father and he
13:05
shall be to me a son
13:06
and again when he brings the firstborn
13:08
into the world he says
13:10
let all god's angels
13:14
worship him god will never allow
13:17
anybody else to worship to be worshiped
13:20
but if that person was god
13:21
which means that jesus is god because
13:23
god himself says in the scripture
13:24
let god's all angels worship him see
13:28
satan wanted to be worshipped and he got
13:29
kicked out of heaven
13:31
right so god will not tolerate anybody
13:33
has to be worshipped if he's in god so
13:35
which means that jesus is god
13:36
now of the angels he says he makes his
13:39
angels wings and his ministers a flame
13:41
of fire
13:42
but of the son he says
13:45
your throne or god
13:49
is forever and ever
13:52
the sector of uprightness is the scepter
13:55
of your kingdom you have
13:56
loved righteousness and hated wickedness
13:59
therefore
14:00
god your god has anointed you with the
14:03
oil
14:03
of gladness beyond your companions and
14:06
you
14:06
lord listen to this in verse 10 you
14:09
lord laid the foundation of the earth in
14:13
the beginning and the heavens are the
14:14
work of your hands
14:16
they will perish but you remain they
14:18
will all wear out like a garment
14:20
like a robe you roll them up like a
14:22
garment they will be changed but you are
14:24
the same
14:25
you are the same and your years will
14:27
have no end
14:28
and to which of the angels has he ever
14:30
says sit at my right hand until i make
14:32
your enemies
14:33
a full suit for your feet i'm gonna stop
14:36
here this is incredible
14:37
now let's go to john 8 and let's see
14:39
what jesus himself says about himself
14:41
okay because this these people drive me
14:43
nuts listen to what jesus says
14:45
truly truly i say to you i'll take it
14:47
from verse 51 in john chapter 8.
14:49
truly truly i say to you if anyone keeps
14:51
my word he will never see death
14:54
the jew said to him now we know that you
14:56
have a demon abraham died as did the
14:58
prophet
14:58
yet you say if anyone keeps my word he
15:01
will never taste
15:01
death are you greater than our father
15:04
abraham who died
15:05
and the prophets died who do you make
15:07
yourself out to be
15:08
and jesus answered if i glorify myself
15:11
my glory is nothing
15:12
it is my father who glorifies me of whom
15:14
you say he is our god
15:16
but you have not known him i know him if
15:18
i were to say i do not know him i'll be
15:20
a liar like you
15:21
but i do know him and i keep his word
15:23
now listen to what happened i'm going to
15:26
read you something else here
15:28
actually what i wanted to read you was
15:31
i didn't get that so let me let me get
15:32
to it give me just give me one second
15:35
and listen to what jesus says here
15:38
about himself okay listen to what jesus
15:41
says
15:44
jesus said to them and so did you say to
15:47
him you are not yet 50 years old and
15:48
have you seen
15:49
abraham and jesus said to them
15:53
truly truly i say to you
15:56
before abraham was i
16:00
am end of the debate and they picked up
16:04
stones to throw at him
16:06
but jesus hid himself and went out of
16:07
the temple jesus
16:09
said of himself i am because that
16:13
word i am nobody else can say about god
16:16
because god is eternal
16:17
so when jesus said i am he is basically
16:20
saying that he is
16:22
god okay god incarnate
16:25
okay god the man and so he had that dual
16:28
nature that we talked about
16:29
he is both god and also man so when the
16:32
jehovah witness looks at
16:34
look at colossians 1 verse 15 to 16 they
16:37
don't
16:38
verse 16 to 17 they don't actually read
16:40
verse 16 and 17
16:42
they stop us verse 15 and they don't
16:44
understand what the scripture is saying
16:45
the scripture says i'm going to again
16:47
recap you on that before i leave here he
16:50
is the image of the invisible god
16:52
the firstborn of fourth creation and
16:54
then
16:55
paul gives the reason why for by him all
16:57
things were created
16:58
so the first one of all creation means
17:00
that he has the firstborn status
17:03
means he's preeminent and he is supreme
17:05
over all things
17:06
that's what i mean he doesn't mean that
17:08
he was created
17:09
that's not what i mean so let's get that
17:11
straight so i'm sure that i've given you
17:13
plenty of evidence here
17:14
to understand this so when paul was
17:16
writing his letter he knew exactly what
17:18
he was talking about
17:19
and his readers knew exactly what he
17:20
meant so for the scripture says in verse
17:23
16 for by him
17:24
all things were made okay in heaven and
17:27
on earth
17:27
visible invisible whether thrones or
17:29
dominions or rulers or authorities
17:32
all things were created through him and
17:34
for him and he
17:35
is before all things and in him all
17:38
things hold together
17:39
he is the giver of life okay paul talks
17:41
about this in acts 17
17:43
okay we leave and move and have our
17:45
being in him so jesus was not created
17:48
because jesus is the creator of all
17:51
things
17:52
okay so i'm hoping that this has helped
17:54
you guys out
17:55
there's a lot more things that he said
17:57
yesterday that i'm going to address one
17:58
at a time
17:59
he also said something yesterday that i
18:01
just thought it was the most craziest
18:03
thing that i've ever heard in my life
18:04
so he basically said that god was not
18:07
omnipresent
18:08
and i actually took off my glasses and
18:10
looked at him i said what did you say
18:12
at that point i wanted to just pop in my
18:14
head i'm like this dude is nuts
18:16
you know and this is the kind of stuff
18:17
that we are facing so uh we're gonna be
18:19
talking about more of this again so i
18:21
i'm looking forward to to talk about to
18:23
talking to you about this
18:25
a lot more again uh hopefully this has
18:27
helped you guys out
18:28
and and have a wonderful evening thank
18:30
you
