How Can We Know The Will Of God? Is it possible, A closer look at Romans 12:1-2
Feb 19, 2025
Many of us who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ find ourselves asking the following question, what is the will of God for my life? And most people who ask this question are usually waiting for some mystical revelation from God. I’m not saying that God cannot reveal specific things to us via His word, or another medium. But when we think of God in those terms, we are in for a very frustrating life. Fortunately for us the Bible has provided us with practical guidelines to know what God desires for us. Paul in the book of Romans explained the wrath of God, the nature of the adamic man, our inability to live up to God’s standards, our hopeless condition as children of wrath, then introduces salvation by grace through faith in Christ, condemns salvation by works, all this from Romans 1-11. And He opens Romans 12 with the following verses” I appeal to you therefore, brothers,[a] by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.[b] 2 Do not be conformed to this world,[c] but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect”
We are going to exploring these verses today as they give us the blueprint for discovering the will of God for our lives. See video

hello good morning this is
0:01
tayibatives.com
0:03
good friday and i'm sure a lot of you
0:05
guys are looking forward to the weekend
0:08
and i am as well but i'm just not too
0:10
fond of the snow
0:12
i think it's gonna snow like on saturday
0:14
or sunday and i'm not excited about it i
0:16
don't like snow
0:18
i don't know why it just makes me a
0:19
little bit like depressed
0:21
i don't like it but it is what it is uh
0:24
if it snows it is what it is so anyway
0:28
today's topic is
0:29
is it possible to know the will of the
0:31
lord
0:32
and the passage that we're going to be
0:34
studying is
0:35
romans 12 verse 1 to 2. so i'm going to
0:38
jump into my intro
0:40
and then we're going to see what's going
0:43
on here
0:44
now many of us who believe in the lord
0:45
jesus christ
0:47
find ourselves asking the following
0:49
question what is the will of god for my
0:51
life
0:51
i'm sure you've asked yourself that
0:53
question and i've done it too
0:55
and most people when when we ask this
0:57
question we are usually waiting for
0:59
some kind of mystical revelation from
1:01
god
1:02
you know hearing like another voice on
1:05
some kind of sign
1:07
and i'm not saying that god does not
1:08
reveal specific
1:10
uh things through his word sometimes and
1:12
another medium he can use anything to
1:14
talk
1:16
but when we think in god of in those
1:18
terms
1:19
we are in for a very frustrating life
1:23
because we just want to hear from god
1:26
and we
1:26
we are always like looking for this
1:28
mystical revelation like i mentioned
1:29
earlier
1:30
but fortunately the bible has provided
1:32
us with practical
1:34
guidelines to know what god desires for
1:37
you and for me
1:38
now paul in the book of romans explained
1:40
on the wrath of god
1:42
and then he talks about the nature of
1:43
the adamic man and then he talks about
1:46
our inability to live up to god's
1:48
standards
1:48
and then he talks about our hopeless
1:50
condition as children of
1:52
wrath then he introduces on salvation by
1:54
grace
1:55
through faith in jesus christ and then
1:57
he condemns on salvation by works
2:00
and all this is from romans 1 to 11.
2:03
and then he begins romans 12 with the
2:05
following uh
2:06
two verses i appeal to you therefore
2:09
brothers
2:10
by the mercies of god to present your
2:13
bodies
2:13
as a living sacrifice holy and
2:16
acceptable to god
2:18
which is your spiritual worship do not
2:20
be conformed
2:21
to this world but be transformed by the
2:24
renewal of your mind
2:26
that by testing you may discern what is
2:28
the will of god
2:29
what is good and acceptable and perfect
2:32
so i want us to dive into the scriptures
2:34
and we are going to understand how and
2:37
if it is possible to know the will of
2:39
god
2:40
okay so let's let's jump into that so
2:44
romans 12 verse one let's start with
2:46
verse one verse one says
2:48
i appeal to you therefore brothers
2:52
by the mercies of god to present your
2:54
bodies
2:55
as a living sacrifice holy
2:58
and acceptable to god which is your
3:00
spiritual worship
3:02
so paul is basically saying that in view
3:05
of all that i've told you from romans 1
3:07
to 11
3:08
about god and his mercies i exhort you
3:11
to live the rest of your lives
3:13
as a living sacrifice holy and
3:16
acceptable to god
3:17
and this ought to be your reasonable
3:19
response that's what paul is saying
3:21
so we need to know what paul had in mind
3:23
when he was uh
3:24
writing those verses and to understand
3:26
it let's go to leviticus 1 verse 1 to
3:28
17.
3:30
and we're going to talk about the burned
3:31
offering so let's jump into that
3:33
so we are going to talk about the burnt
3:35
offering so what i'll do is
3:36
i'm going to have the verses on on the
3:38
screen
3:40
and i'm going to play in the background
3:41
so you can listen to the
3:43
the orator the guy that's talking he has
3:45
a better diction than i do so
3:47
let me go there and let me start
3:51
leviticus chapter one
3:55
the lord called to moses and spoke to
3:57
him from the attend of meeting
3:59
he said speak to the israelites and say
4:02
to them
4:02
when anyone among you brings an offering
4:04
to the lord
4:05
brings your offering an animal from
4:07
either the herd or the flock
4:10
if the offering is a burnt offering from
4:12
the herd you are to offer a mail without
4:14
defect
4:16
you must present it at the entrance to
4:17
the tent of meeting so that it will be
4:19
acceptable to the lord
4:21
you are to lay your hand on the head of
4:23
the burnt offering and it will be
4:25
accepted on your behalf
4:26
to make atonement for you you are to
4:29
slaughter the young bull before the lord
4:32
and then aaron's sons the priests shall
4:34
bring the blood
4:35
and splash it against the sides of the
4:36
altar at the entrance to the tent of
4:38
meeting
4:39
you're to skin the burnt offering and
4:41
cut it into pieces
4:43
the sons of aaron the priest are to put
4:45
fire on the altar and arrange
4:47
wood on the fire then aaron sons the
4:50
priests
4:50
shall arrange the pieces including the
4:53
head and the fat
4:54
on the wood that is burning on the altar
4:57
you are to wash the internal organs and
4:59
the legs with water
5:01
and the priest is to burn all of it on
5:03
the altar
5:04
it is a burnt offering a food offering
5:07
an aroma
5:08
pleasing to the lord if the offering is
5:11
a burnt offering from the flock
5:13
from either the sheep or the goats you
5:15
are to offer a male without defect
5:18
you are to slaughter it at the north
5:19
side of the altar before the lord
5:21
and aaron's sons the priests shall
5:23
splash its blood against the sides of
5:25
the altar
5:26
you are to cut it into pieces and the
5:29
priest shall arrange them
5:30
including the head and the fat on the
5:32
wood that is burning on the altar
5:35
you are to wash the internal organs and
5:37
the legs with water
5:39
and the priest is to bring all of them
5:41
and burn them
5:42
on the altar it is a burnt offering
5:45
a food offering an aroma pleasing to the
5:48
lord
5:50
if the offering to the lord is a burnt
5:51
offering of birds
5:53
you are to offer a dove or a young
5:55
pigeon
5:57
the priest shall bring it to the altar
5:59
ring off the head
6:00
and burn it on the altar its blood shall
6:03
be drained out on the side of the altar
6:06
he is to remove the crop and the
6:08
feathers and throw them down east of the
6:10
altar
6:10
where the ashes are he shall tear it
6:13
open by the wings
6:14
not dividing it completely and then the
6:16
priest shall burn it on the wood that is
6:18
burning on the altar
6:20
it is a burnt offering a food offering
6:23
an aroma
6:23
pleasing to the lord now you can clearly
6:27
see
6:28
that there was three separate uh items
6:30
you can bring
6:31
okay because god made it that way so
6:33
that people that didn't have money could
6:34
also
6:36
be able to uh offer something so there
6:38
was
6:39
either um the goat and then you have the
6:42
um
6:44
um the sheep from the herd or a pair of
6:47
birds okay birds that you can bring so
6:49
he made it possible so that anybody
6:51
could bring an offering so if you can
6:53
afford a typical goat or
6:56
maybe one other bigger animal then you
6:58
could bring a young pigeon or a dog
7:00
so basically god made it possible for
7:03
everybody to bring something so but
7:04
that's not
7:05
that's not what i want to focus on here
7:06
okay we're going to go back to our
7:08
presentation
7:09
and we're going to get some key point
7:10
because paul when you wrote
7:12
romans 1 romans 12 verse 1 he had this
7:15
in mind so let's go back
7:17
and then we're going to see why he was
7:18
talking about this
7:20
so as i was saying we need to understand
7:23
that the burned offering was a voluntary
7:25
offering
7:25
it wasn't mandated it was a voluntary an
7:28
act of
7:29
drawing close to the lord okay so the
7:31
worshiper will bring his perfect
7:34
animal to the priest healthy
7:37
because he represented an attitude of
7:38
thanksgiving
7:40
and gratitude to the lord so the priest
7:42
will inspect the animal to make sure
7:44
it was appropriate so that the worshiper
7:47
would be accepted
7:48
so it was done to measure the heart of
7:50
the worshipper
7:51
so accepting acceptance wasn't automatic
7:54
the inspection was done to see that what
7:57
was welling up in the heart of the
7:58
worshipper
7:59
basically you didn't just bring any
8:01
animal you brought the best of the best
8:04
and after all these steps were
8:05
accomplished the animal was then
8:07
completely
8:08
burned at the altar and this action was
8:10
not
8:11
was not without meaning it was there was
8:13
a meaning behind it okay
8:15
the worship i was basically saying and
8:16
essentially saying to the lord
8:18
all that i have and all that i am is
8:21
yours
8:21
i'm giving it to you i'm surrendering
8:24
everything
8:25
to you i am yours in accordance with
8:28
on deuteronomy 6 verse 5 you shall love
8:30
the lord your god
8:31
with all your heart with all your soul
8:33
and with all your might so when the
8:34
worshiper brought his offering to the
8:36
temple
8:37
he brought the male without blemish he
8:39
was saying i'm giving you my best i'm
8:41
giving you all of me
8:42
all that i have is yours so the animal
8:45
pretty much represented
8:46
the person's heart and the uh his
8:49
willingness to to give himself to the
8:50
lord so basically
8:52
what you did was you went into the
8:53
temple you went into the
8:55
the place and you pressed uh you put
8:58
your hands on the headed animal you
8:59
press it down basically you were saying
9:01
everything that is mine and all that i
9:03
am is your sloth and i'm bringing it to
9:05
you
9:05
because i want to draw closer so i'm i'm
9:07
taking this and i'm giving you
9:09
all of myself so it was it was basically
9:12
uh bringing the the burnt offering was a
9:15
representation of
9:16
the heart of the worshiper like his
9:18
willingness and his his
9:20
his gratitude and his um attitude
9:23
towards the lord is saying i want to
9:24
draw closer to the lord that was the
9:26
the intention and he was voluntary so
9:31
and the point the important thing to
9:32
remember is that it was a voluntary act
9:34
of worship
9:35
and this is what paul had in mind when
9:36
he wrote verse 1 of romans 12.
9:39
so we are completely setting ourselves
9:41
apart to be holy and fully gods
9:43
that's what this is saying and paul
9:45
tells us in verse 2
9:47
how to perform the ritual now we don't
9:49
have a ritual to to do
9:51
in our day and age but he's telling us
9:53
uh practical way
9:54
practical ways to and to offer ourselves
9:57
as a living sacrifice so now we're going
9:59
to look at verse 2 for that matter
10:01
so verse 2 says do not be conformed to
10:05
this world
10:06
but be transformed by the renewal of
10:08
your mind that by testing
10:10
you may discern what is the will of god
10:12
what is good and acceptable and perfect
10:16
so paul is saying here that the way we
10:18
offer ourselves as a living sacrifice to
10:20
god
10:20
is by number one no longer conforming to
10:24
the ways of this world
10:26
okay no longer conform to the ways of
10:29
this world and we're gonna see what that
10:31
means
10:32
basically on the thoughts patterns of
10:35
the natural person
10:36
the person with the adamic nature the
10:39
the person that does not have the holy
10:40
spirit
10:41
because without the spirit of god you
10:44
are basically dead
10:45
okay dead so let's look at some of the
10:48
characteristics of the natural person
10:50
and we're going to go to galatians 5
10:52
verse 19 to 21
10:54
and here the and and then and that
10:56
passage shows us the fruits of the
10:58
person that conforms to this world
11:00
now the works of the flesh are evident
11:03
sexual immorality
11:05
impunity sensuality idolatry
11:09
sorcery enmity strife jealousy
11:12
feats of anger rivalries dissensions
11:16
divisions envy drunkenness
11:19
orgies and things like these so
11:22
basically we have at least there that
11:23
lisa does exhaustive war you get the
11:25
picture
11:26
so my question is do any of these
11:29
qualifiers apply to you
11:31
i'm not saying that you ought to be
11:32
perfect even though god
11:34
demands perfection but are you sinning
11:37
less
11:38
and are you desiring righteousness more
11:40
or are you being sanctified
11:42
are you sinning less do you find
11:44
yourself loving god and loving the
11:46
things of god more
11:47
or are you double-minded
11:51
okay remember what james says in verse
11:54
um
11:55
james 1 let's look at it james 1 verse 5
11:58
james says if any of you lacks wisdom
12:01
let him ask god who gives generously to
12:04
all
12:05
without reproach and you'll be given him
12:07
but let him ask in faith
12:09
with no doubting for the one who doubts
12:12
is like a wave of the sea that is driven
12:14
and
12:14
tossed by the wind for that person must
12:17
not suppose that he will receive
12:19
anything from the lord he is a
12:21
double-minded man unstable in all these
12:23
ways and we're gonna see why this is
12:24
important
12:26
basically you cannot hang on to the ways
12:28
of this world and expect
12:30
god to disclose anything to you
12:33
again i'll say that again you cannot
12:35
hang on to the ways of this world and
12:37
expect god to disclose
12:40
anything to you and that leads me to my
12:42
next point
12:43
you will be transformed by the renewal
12:45
of your mind okay so we're gonna see
12:47
what that means
12:48
so paul is saying that let the word of
12:50
god transform the person that you
12:52
are i don't know how long you've lived
12:54
without the holy spirit i don't know
12:56
okay but we grew up learning wrong
12:59
thoughts patterns like our whole life
13:01
okay and when god saves us he begins the
13:04
process of
13:05
re-educating us again through the
13:07
sanctifying work of the holy spirit
13:09
so he begins to teach us what he means
13:11
to be a child of god
13:12
and this is because god has a specific
13:15
purpose which leads me again to my next
13:16
point we're gonna get there
13:18
in a minute the conclusion that by
13:21
testing
13:22
you may you may discern what is the will
13:24
of god what is good and acceptable to
13:27
imperfect okay so that's that's the step
13:29
so
13:30
god first erases the old thoughts
13:33
patterns
13:34
and plant new thoughts patterns so that
13:36
we may be able to discern
13:38
what he desires for us that's the main
13:40
goal
13:41
the sanctification process is so that we
13:43
know the will
13:44
of god it's a daily progressive process
13:48
it's not some mystical revelation we get
13:50
from the lord
13:51
as we are daily changed our taste buds
13:54
change and they begin to align
13:56
themselves with the character of god
13:59
and progressively our lives become
14:01
closer and closer to the life of jesus
14:04
and god's main purpose is that we may be
14:06
conformed to the image of his son
14:08
so that he may be the firstborn among
14:10
many brothers
14:12
the will of god is that we reflect
14:14
christ fully
14:16
throughout our life on earth which takes
14:18
me to
14:19
what can we learn from this so in the
14:21
beginning we said is it possible to know
14:23
the will of god
14:25
and i'll say yes because here's the
14:28
thing
14:28
you cannot continue to live in willful
14:31
disobedience
14:32
and expect to know what the will of god
14:34
is i mean i've known
14:36
and myself i used to be like that and
14:38
some days i'm still like that
14:40
people live in open scenes open
14:42
rebellion you go to church every sunday
14:45
you listen to sermons after sermons and
14:47
you remain unchanged
14:48
and somehow you are satisfied with this
14:51
form of christianity
14:52
which is no christianity at all it is
14:54
purely subjective
14:56
and is based on emotions and has no
14:58
power behind it and paul talks about it
15:00
in
15:00
second timothy 3 verse 1 to 5. basically
15:03
what i'm saying is this
15:04
you can't keep on doing the things that
15:06
you used to do and expect god to speak
15:08
to you or expect to know the word
15:09
the will of god are you being
15:11
transformed or are you holding on to
15:13
your old ways of thinking
15:14
and then you want god to reveal
15:15
something to you hello it doesn't work
15:18
like that
15:19
first you're going to be sanctified and
15:21
you're going to be
15:22
sanctifying the sanctification process
15:24
it's a slow long
15:26
process because all our lives we've
15:28
learned the wrong thing so god has to
15:30
come
15:30
and erase all these bad things in order
15:33
to implant his own desires in
15:35
us so it's not going to be some kind of
15:37
mystical revelation where you're going
15:38
to hear an audible voice and now all of
15:40
a sudden
15:41
things change no the sanctification
15:43
process
15:45
puts you in the place where you become
15:47
more and more sensitive to the voice of
15:49
god and
15:50
and then now you are sensitive to sins
15:52
because when sin
15:53
when you see sin in your life you no
15:54
longer like it you no longer enjoy
15:56
you want to stay away from it but what
15:58
people do in our churches these days is
16:00
they hold on to their sins and they want
16:02
to know the will of god as if that's
16:04
going to happen
16:04
it doesn't work that way first you be
16:07
sanctified and as you've been sanctified
16:10
the process begins to just line up
16:12
itself
16:13
and then little by little god reveals
16:16
more and more and he may reveal things
16:17
that he doesn't want in your life
16:19
so the first process is the
16:20
sanctification process he's going to
16:22
take away the things of your life that
16:24
are displeasing in
16:25
sight but that's not what we have today
16:28
we have
16:29
some type of false sense of assurance
16:32
we hold on to our sins we continue to
16:34
live in open rebellion and we
16:36
expect god to speak to us and actually
16:37
sometimes we deceive ourselves because
16:39
we go to church
16:41
we sing songs and emotionally we we shed
16:44
tears and the shedding of the tears and
16:46
this gives us the false
16:48
sense of oh yes the holy spirit is here
16:51
maybe you're deceiving yourself because
16:52
let's
16:53
let's let's let's be honest like i've
16:55
listened to certain young songs
16:58
and i've cried sometimes else like in
17:01
the past
17:01
because my emotions were playing with my
17:05
mind
17:05
so sometimes that's that's what happens
17:07
you have a false sense of assurance
17:10
and you think the lord is pleased with
17:12
what you're doing so therefore
17:13
you don't change but paul is saying here
17:16
be transformed by the renewing of your
17:18
mind
17:18
no longer conform to the pattern of this
17:20
world but give yourself to god fully
17:23
and ask him to remove in your life the
17:25
things that are displeasing in his sight
17:27
and i want us to go to timothy three
17:29
verse one to five
17:30
to 2 to end this listen to what timothy
17:33
says
17:34
but understand this that in the last
17:37
days
17:38
there will come times of difficulty
17:41
for people will be lovers of self lovers
17:44
of money proud
17:46
arrogant abusive disobedient to their
17:49
parent
17:50
ungrateful unholy heartless
17:54
unappeasable slanderous without
17:56
self-control
17:57
brutal not loving good treacherous
18:00
reckless swollen with conceit lovers of
18:04
pleasure
18:05
rather than lovers of god having their
18:08
appearance of godliness but denying its
18:10
power
18:11
avoid such people ladies and gentlemen
18:15
our churches are filled with folks like
18:19
this
18:20
you have a form of godliness but you
18:22
deny its power
18:23
you continue to live in sin and that you
18:26
don't even want to
18:27
hear when another brother or sister in
18:29
christ tries to
18:30
um lovingly tell you brother and brother
18:33
i don't think this is right
18:35
you actually people actually say you are
18:36
judging me and this is uh this is the
18:39
key phrase and this is like the
18:40
cliche phrase for a lot of people they
18:42
say to you well don't judge me because
18:44
god said don't judge
18:45
but scripture also says the man of god
18:47
the man
18:48
with the spirit of god can judge all
18:50
things but he himself
18:52
is not subject to any judgment for who
18:55
has the spirit of god
18:56
that he can instruct him so basically
18:57
what i'm saying is this
18:59
you may be deceiving yourself you may
19:01
have a form of godliness
19:03
where you deny its power basically you
19:06
won't know the will of god if you
19:08
continue to live in rebellion
19:09
how is god gonna speak to you when you
19:11
are rebellious
19:13
this is a call to a holy living
19:16
i'm not saying you're perfect but you're
19:18
gonna sin less
19:20
and you're gonna love the things of god
19:22
more it's a growing process
19:24
where you grow and god begins to change
19:26
your desires
19:27
and then you begin to love the things of
19:29
god more and little by little he's going
19:30
to show you where to go
19:32
but people want to hold on to their sin
19:35
and at the same time they want to know
19:36
the will of god as if
19:38
that's going to happen no paul says it
19:42
you no longer confront the pattern of
19:44
this world if you want to know the will
19:45
of god
19:46
then stop doing the wrong things that
19:47
you're doing and when the holy spirit
19:49
speaks to you
19:50
stop it because paul says
19:53
then you'll be able to to discern and
19:55
test and approve what god's will is
19:57
you can't keep on doing the old things
19:59
that you do and expect god to give you
20:00
new information
20:01
no paul says do
20:05
no longer conform to the pattern of this
20:07
world but be transformed by the renewing
20:09
of your mind
20:10
so that you may test and approve what
20:13
god's will is don't let nobody fool you
20:16
don't let anybody fool you with some
20:18
kind of mystical
20:20
um religion it is clear and the
20:23
scripture says
20:26
stop sinning stop living in sin
20:29
desperately cry out to the lord so that
20:31
he gives you the strength
20:33
to give up the sins and to hold hang on
20:35
to him and
20:36
offer yourself as a living sacrifice
20:38
holy unto the lord surrender
20:41
okay is it possible to know the will of
20:43
god yes it is possible because god wants
20:45
to know his will
20:47
but it's not something mystical it is in
20:49
this scripture
20:51
no longer conform to the pattern of this
20:52
word i know i'm saying this again and
20:54
again but i want you to get it
20:56
because i'm also in this process it is a
20:59
hard process but it is worth it
21:01
because god changes your desires in
21:03
order to plan in you
21:04
new desires have a wonderful weekend and
21:07
i'll see you next time thank you
