welcome in to The whoer Illustrated
0:03
postgame wrap-up show I'm Drew Rosenberg
0:06
I'm joined by Kyler Staley who's at
0:07
assembly hall right now I really don't
0:10
even know what to say at this point
0:11
Indiana I mean this might have been the
0:14
worst effort you could really the wor
0:16
probably the worst effort of the Mike
0:18
Woodson era I don't think it's been
0:19
worse than it was tonight I think this
0:22
might
0:23
be when you look at the grand scheme of
0:26
things you know with this team and the
0:27
hype that they had with them and
0:30
everything I think this is the worst
0:31
loss ever in IU history um you know from
0:35
a point standpoint 94 to 60 69 um on
0:39
your home floor in Assembly Hall one of
0:42
the best college basketball venues in
0:45
the world and you pretty much disgraced
0:46
all that you disgraced everything there
0:49
is um when it comes to Indiana
0:52
basketball tonight and it was a poor
0:54
effort nearly from the start I would say
0:57
you allowed 60 points scored um in the
1:01
first half no fight at all and you know
1:04
second half you showed a little bit of
1:06
it you look like you wanted to get back
1:08
into it but I mean when you're down 30
1:10
points a lot of things you you do a lot
1:12
of things on the floor that can make you
1:13
look a little bit better than what it is
1:15
but bad effort from everybody nobody did
1:18
anything good the coaching was awful the
1:21
game plan was awful whatever that game
1:24
plan was you don't even know if the
1:25
players followed it or whatever it's
1:27
just it's not Indiana basketball it's
1:30
it's just bad and really I'm just
1:31
rambling right now but it's just yeah
1:33
it's sad in a lot of ways Drew yeah I
1:36
mean I like there's not a I guess
1:39
there's one singular positive I could
1:41
take from this game it's shy Newton
1:43
playing and that's about it everything
1:45
else was as bad as it could have been
1:46
you got dominated on the rebound on the
1:49
glass and with that I mean you just
1:51
watch it it was effort there was uh one
1:53
play in the first half I don't for
1:54
anyone who's on Ant Wright's um
1:57
halftime um Twitter whatever um chill
2:01
space right yeah chill space that's for
2:03
the word all right yeah yeah but um
2:05
there was a play inbo had a clear box
2:08
out will riy gets just out Works him
2:10
grabs a rebound gets a quick put back
2:12
layup like it was all the things that
2:14
you need to do to be a good basketball
2:16
team all the little things Indiana did
2:18
none of them Illinois did I wouldn't
2:20
even say Illinois played that well today
2:21
either that was like the thing that was
2:23
like really frustrating about this game
2:25
it wasn't like Illinois shot some like
2:27
crazy percentage like they shot 40% from
2:29
the field it was not like they like
2:32
dominated the game like played their
2:34
best game of the year Indiana was just
2:36
that bad it was all it was more so
2:38
Indiana playing horrible than Illinois
2:40
doing anything out out of this world it
2:43
was a it was a college basketball team
2:45
playing a fifth grade team in a lot of
2:47
sense and it's fundamentals right and
2:49
you talked about just a little bit if
2:51
you're laziness I I counted at least
2:53
three and I know there's way more than
2:55
that I counted at least three times that
2:58
I saw my own eyes and Indiana Defenders
3:00
fall asleep and let off easy cuts cuz
3:04
there was one play I don't know what it
3:06
was but it was when Indiana was kind of
3:08
trying to go on that run to get back
3:10
into the game at the beginning of the
3:11
second half um they needed defensive
3:13
stops and I there was like a double team
3:15
with inbo maybe Anthony Lil or whatever
3:18
and then Luke goody falls asleep and
3:20
lets a Illinois player um get that easy
3:23
cut easy basket and it's just it's the
3:25
little things and that's the frustrating
3:27
part like to be a good basketball team
3:29
it's a little thing you touched on it
3:31
it's fundamentals it's it's just being
3:34
coachable and I don't know right now if
3:36
this team's coachable I don't know what
3:38
the problem is with the coaching style
3:41
it's just there's a lot of questions on
3:42
here and it's just very heads scratching
3:44
because I will sit here right now and I
3:46
will still say this Indiana team
3:48
talent-wise still has probably the best
3:50
group of talent in the 10 right it's
3:53
ridiculous it's ridiculous right and
3:55
obviously you know Indiana paid a lot of
3:58
money for a lot of these players and you
4:00
got guys that have been in the program
4:01
for a long time Trey Galloway Anthony
4:03
leil and first of all slide note on Tre
4:05
Galloway the way he's playing as a
4:06
senior which is absolutely pathetic and
4:08
I'll just be stly honest with you um
4:10
because you got to say these harsh words
4:12
because you just got to get your point
4:13
across and Galloway what he's showing on
4:16
the floor is just not senior level
4:18
that's freshman stuff what I'm seeing
4:19
out of him and there's a lot of times
4:20
where I think even Bryson Tucker shows a
4:22
lot more maturity on the basketball
4:24
floor than what Galloway does but um
4:26
that's just besides the point but it's
4:28
just every single player and it wouldn't
4:30
have mattered if Malik Renu was playing
4:31
today or not it's just it's effort at
4:34
the end of the day and when you've got a
4:36
game that you have to win if you want to
4:38
make the NCAA tournament if you want to
4:40
compete for a big 10 Championship you
4:42
got to win these types of games and
4:44
Indiana hasn't done that in these past
4:46
two games versus Iowa and today it's
4:49
just very head scratching and just very
4:51
very embarrassing at the end of the day
4:54
yeah it's I mean I don't even really I'm
4:56
almost at a loss for words at this point
4:58
I think you look at this team you could
5:00
just even going back to last year
5:02
because this I know it's you know a very
5:04
different roster you have obviously the
5:06
returners of like Trey gay no is out Le
5:09
out but this is the exact same stuff we
5:11
saw last year on a bigger level with
5:14
more talent and it's somehow worse I
5:17
know you know the record's better at
5:19
this point than it was last year you
5:21
know they have this they have the quad
5:22
one win already but you look at the next
5:24
you know I think it's the next eight
5:26
games there isn't a game there I there
5:28
isn't a game there I look say you know
5:29
what Indiana is going to win that game
5:31
confidently I don't even see a game I
5:32
think confidently that they're going to
5:34
compete it's been it's that bad right
5:35
now and it's I mean we talked about
5:38
we're not hitting the panic button yet I
5:39
mean I'm past the panic button at this
5:41
point this was you know if they lose
5:43
this game by 10 points it's one thing
5:45
but the way they came out no effort just
5:48
lack of energy Focus attention to detail
5:50
and you have all this Talent you know
5:52
all this nil money you've spent on this
5:54
roster and this is the result you're
5:56
getting this is stuff that just can't
5:57
happen especially in January of this
5:59
season we've talked about Mike Woodson
6:01
going to turn the uh can he turn the
6:02
season around save his
6:05
job the conversation is going to quickly
6:07
turn if Mike Woodson this eight game
6:09
stretch could quickly turn Mike
6:10
Woodson's season into will he have a job
6:12
by the end of the year because I don't
6:15
know if Woodson makes it through maybe
6:16
even this eight game stretch if Indiana
6:18
plays like it did today yeah there's I
6:21
mean there's no positives really you can
6:23
take away right now and the frustrating
6:24
part is you know you thought that
6:26
Indiana had kind of turned the corner a
6:27
little bit because they started off the
6:29
2020 5 year calendar year um you know
6:33
playing some really good basketball
6:34
obviously reneu goes down and they they
6:36
figure out you know a style that they
6:38
can play with the one big and these past
6:40
two games man it's just it's frustrating
6:42
to watch because it's just like what
6:43
what happened just I I don't know but
6:46
like everybody that you know is hitting
6:49
the Panic bucket panic button has every
6:51
right to do that right now I I there's
6:54
no reason for anybody that really have
6:56
faith right now that this season's going
6:57
to turn around but um I think there's
7:00
still 13 games left so obviously there's
7:02
time to turn it around if they were able
7:04
to you know rally off these next two
7:07
that's another thing too they're going
7:08
on the road these next two games I mean
7:10
you have no confidence that they're
7:11
going to show up on the road because
7:12
when have they really ever shown up on
7:14
the road other than Penn State so and
7:16
you looking back it's just like how did
7:18
Indiana win that game it's just it's
7:20
weird but I will say these next four
7:22
these next four days or whatever before
7:24
the Ohio State game that they had to
7:26
have some kind of come to Jesus moment I
7:28
don't know what that is is but like that
7:30
they're going to have to just sit down
7:32
and they're going have to figure things
7:33
out and you know Mike Woodson can say oh
7:35
we got to get back to work and
7:36
everything like that I I think we're way
7:38
past that it's time to figure out what
7:40
the root cause of all this is and you
7:42
know may be time for Mike Woodson
7:44
himself and I don't know if he's done
7:45
this to look at himself in the mirror
7:47
and and see what he needs to change as a
7:49
coach because um this is going to be a
7:51
long two months of basketball if Indiana
7:55
doesn't figure out things but um yeah
7:58
just pathetic at the end of the day
7:59
there's no more words I can think of
8:01
other than pathetic yeah I mean Mike
8:04
Woodson has all the resources everything
8:06
you could need to be successful I mean
8:08
you have the history with the program
8:09
there's so much passion for this fan
8:12
base and still it's it's he had two
8:16
years you're like oh he improved he
8:17
improved and then it's gotten even worse
8:20
and it's getting to the point I mean I'm
8:23
uh Brent just put put this comment how
8:25
do you even let him finish the year I
8:26
don't if this continues I don't I don't
8:29
see how we can finish the season if
8:31
Indiana goes through this nine game
8:32
stretch and I think there is a real
8:35
world they could go winless in this
8:37
stretch which is insane to think about
8:39
the start of the year that Indiana could
8:41
go winless for a nine game stretch in
8:43
the Big 10 I guess 10 game if you go
8:45
back to Illinois or Iowa it is a mess
8:49
and I don't see it changing anytime soon
8:51
I know Malik Ru is out and his you know
8:53
him coming back is it's going to help as
8:55
much as people you know are frustrated
8:56
with the too big system but it's bigger
8:59
than that at this point it's it's just
9:01
shocking what we're seeing from Indiana
9:03
how this team is getting worse right now
9:06
at a time where teams are supposed to be
9:07
figuring it out and getting better yeah
9:10
and to me you know obviously right now
9:13
based off these last two games and you
9:15
know the other losses that Indiana's had
9:16
this year it does look like a change
9:18
needs to be made um I don't see that
9:21
change happening in the middle of the
9:22
season because very rarely you really
9:24
don't see a whole lot of times that
9:26
college coaches get fired in the middle
9:27
of the Season yeah they'll leave like
9:28
Jim l did um or whatever but um very
9:33
rarely do you see that so I I don't
9:34
think they make a change with that but I
9:36
I mean this offseason it's something if
9:39
they don't turn it around these next 13
9:41
games and finish out the Big 10 season
9:43
strong and get back on track I mean
9:44
they're's going to be a change in
9:45
leadership and you know that'll
9:47
obviously come with you know changes in
9:48
assistant coaching and just changes in
9:50
player personnel and all that stuff so
9:53
um I don't know it just it it's very
9:55
head scratching to me from what I
9:57
watched you know it clown show um that
10:01
fight that they had at the end of the
10:02
game that was the most fight that they
10:03
showed these last two games um and I
10:06
also just want to say you know it was
10:08
really bad but major respect to Miles
10:10
rice and Umar Balor for standing up for
10:12
Luke goody in that situation so it at
10:14
least shows you that they're a team and
10:15
they actually you know look out for one
10:17
another but other than that it's just to
10:20
me that could have been the final nail
10:21
in the coffin of this season just with
10:22
that fight and you know who knows what's
10:24
going to happen you know there could be
10:25
a suspension with Umar ballow as well so
10:28
um that's something and also watch out
10:30
but I don't know Drew we got a podcast
10:32
coming up in the next yeah tomorrow yeah
10:34
record tomorrow probably going to be out
10:36
Thursday where we're it's going to be a
10:37
lot more in depth but yeah I just yeah
10:40
it's one of those things I just really
10:41
don't get it um lucky lizard as a boiler
10:44
fan I want I to be good it makes things
10:46
interesting they're good individual
10:47
players they have the talent maybe they
10:49
just need more time to gel as a team I
10:51
like wanted to agree with you I mean I
10:53
do and you know if you asked me probably
10:55
a month ago I would have said yeah just
10:56
give them a little more time let them
10:58
gel but the fact they're getting worse
11:01
and not better tells at least tells me
11:03
everything you need to know Indiana
11:06
teams you know this is a point year
11:08
where teams are figuring stuff out
11:09
starting to get better you know they'll
11:11
have some tough stretches and they'll
11:13
play good
11:14
teams um and like get better but
11:17
Indiana's not getting better this is the
11:19
worst they' looked all year we saw you
11:20
know a Louisville game Louisville was
11:22
not nearly as bad as this and Louisville
11:25
was bad people were ready to fire Mike
11:27
Woodson immediately after that game
11:30
I I just I don't even know what to say
11:32
um Tim Russell is making me laugh a
11:33
little bit I don't know if you can see
11:34
this Kyler but more time to get over the
11:36
hump yep that that's that's the ongoing
11:39
joke but like look I mean here's here's
11:42
the positive I guess you could take out
11:43
of this they can't play much worse than
11:45
what they did these last two games so I
11:47
guess that's a positive look at but I
11:49
mean like you said we we got a podcast
11:50
coming up we we'll get more in depth
11:52
into this because I mean these are
11:53
obviously quick reactions and whatnot
11:55
but um it's it's embarrassing to watch
11:58
that's the that's some embarrassing
12:00
basketball to watch um especially in
12:03
Simon Scotch Assembly Hall out of all
12:04
places so I got no more words d i
12:08
anything else I just want to do talk
12:10
about I guess one more thing I mean if
12:12
Woodson like you mentioned you doubt
12:14
Woodson gets fired till the end of the
12:15
year I we haven't really seen that
12:18
happen like guys getting fired midseason
12:20
but my question I guess with nil is that
12:22
something that like the pro like Scott
12:24
Dolson I guess I guess you need Quinn
12:26
Buckner with all the you know the rumors
12:27
about that but Scott Dolson say hey you
12:29
know what like let's get a new coach in
12:31
here you know maybe like fire them early
12:34
so they can start figuring out a plan
12:36
and address it early because I mean you
12:38
have a trans Sicily commitment that you
12:40
know I you you very much so like to keep
12:45
we've seen Liam McNeely that the
12:46
commitment we've seen Indiana Miss on
12:48
you know for like just going down the
12:50
list of recent commitments Indiana I
12:52
don't want to say should have had but
12:54
you know a different coach might have
12:56
landed you have a Derek Queen you have
12:57
leam mcney you have a fland you have a
13:00
brillan Mullins like it's not just the
13:03
on court issues it's also you know the
13:06
recruiting is a problem this there isn't
13:09
like a sign for this program that says
13:11
you know what hey this is going to get
13:12
better anytime soon and at that point I
13:14
think you have to cut losses and
13:17
obviously I'm not saying fire him
13:18
tonight I'm not saying fire him
13:20
tomorrow but you got I mean if this
13:23
doesn't get better really fast I don't
13:25
know if woodon makes it to the end of
13:26
the year it'll be interesting to watch
13:29
that's pretty much all I can say um they
13:31
got Ohio State on Friday if they can win
13:34
that game you know that that that puts
13:36
some positivity back into this a little
13:39
bit but I mean they're going to have to
13:41
go on a really big run for everyone to
13:43
just kind of get back into this thing
13:46
and you know obviously if you're a true
13:48
Indiana fan you'll support this team
13:50
through and through but it's just right
13:52
now there's just a whole not a whole lot
13:53
of things to be joyful about when
13:56
watching this basketball team yeah I
13:58
mean that that's an understatement of
14:00
the Year Kyler I just I I want to
14:03
believe this thing could change I just
14:05
don't see I just haven't seen anything
14:07
that gives me any confidence at that and
14:09
it's not even it's also the like guys
14:12
are getting worse I feel like miles rice
14:13
he hasn't been bad this year I this is
14:15
not miles rice being bad but it's also
14:18
like freshman a sophomore year usually a
14:20
guy takes a jump miles rice is pretty
14:22
similar to where he was last year he was
14:24
a great player last year he's been
14:25
pretty good really good points for us
14:27
this year like Canon Carlile was you
14:29
know one of Stanford's best players last
14:31
year and he is you know has not been
14:33
great I mean his jump shot never really
14:35
took that
14:36
step I I just it's it seems like it's a
14:39
coaching thing at this point more than
14:41
anything I think everything we kind of
14:43
say comes back to coaching and that's
14:44
you know writing starting or not
14:47
starting writing is on the wall for Mike
14:49
quiton yep and I got nothing else to
14:53
addre yeah I got nothing to else to add
14:55
but make sure to tune in to our talking
14:57
about the hoers podcast on Thursday
14:59
um for more in depth you know got to
15:01
sleep on this a little bit and figure
15:02
out what else that we can talk about
15:04
here but tonight not a whole lot to talk
15:07
about yeah we'll probably have a 30 40
15:09
maybe an hour uh of us talking just uh
15:12
about woodston but yeah so don't miss
15:14
out on that we'll have um postgame or
15:17
postgame press conferences from Mike
15:19
Woodson everything in between on the
15:21
hr.com website and on the YouTube that
15:23
you're on right now thanks for tuning in
15:25
to the who your Illustrated dcom
