domcom Indiana basketball postgame
0:05
wrap-up show John Alden from in touch
0:08
with Indiana sports with you and staff
0:10
writer and site publisher Alec lley with
0:14
us this evening Indiana gets the 82 to
0:16
69 Victory against the USC Trojans in a
0:20
game that where just quick recap real
0:22
quick and I'll make this brief USC looks
0:24
very comfortable in the early going
0:26
Indiana goes on a run late in the first
0:28
half and then they really take control
0:30
from the second half onward into the end
0:32
of the game and just an overall really
0:35
good balanced performance I feel like
0:37
from Indiana Alec what were kind of your
0:39
thoughts on what happened tonight yeah
0:41
absolutely I think that's a good way to
0:43
put it I mean I think this is kind of
0:45
one of those trap games where we talked
0:47
about it uh the other day where
0:49
typically over the last couple of years
0:50
Indiana have struggled in right they
0:52
they started to gain some momentum
0:54
coming off a couple really really strong
0:56
performances in terms of kind of finding
0:58
ways to win games that they typically
1:00
wouldn't um and you want to maintain
1:02
that especially with kind of what the
1:04
next couple of games look like and
1:06
potential opportunities that they can
1:07
have to to obviously add some key wins
1:10
um and they they came out pretty
1:11
lethargic know they did not have the the
1:13
type of effort or intensity that you'd
1:15
like to see um certainly not what they
1:17
had played with in the previous two big
1:20
10 games um and that was a big concern
1:24
and I think you look at you know what
1:25
they were able to do in the second half
1:26
they completely flipped the script right
1:28
they they played not only great
1:30
offensively but but much much better
1:32
defensively and this is a USC team that
1:34
you know just does not have a lot of
1:36
star power uh when it comes to scoring
1:39
so uh the fact that Indiana was really
1:41
able to limit what they did uh in
1:43
transition a lot of that has to do with
1:45
what they did offensively I mean they
1:46
scored uh on 61.8% of their offensive
1:50
possessions in the second half and
1:52
limited to only 2.9 um I think it was
1:56
percent uh turnover rate in the second
1:58
half and when you look at what they were
2:00
able to do uh in the in the first half
2:03
for USC that is a lot of that came off
2:06
of transition a lot of that came off of
2:08
early turnovers for Indiana to kind of
2:10
find a rhythm and so they were able to
2:11
completely uh flip the script when it
2:14
came to that and uh you know you look at
2:15
the from top to bottom I think outside
2:17
of Mackenzie and Baka you have to be
2:19
pretty excited about what this team was
2:21
able to do offensively especially after
2:23
halftime yeah just one of those
2:25
unfortunate nights for Mackenzie and
2:27
Bako 0 for eight shooting zero points
2:29
total but outside of that you had
2:31
another really the third straight good
2:34
performance and really you should say
2:35
great performance from balow with 23
2:37
points uh perfect at the free throw line
2:40
nine for 11 shooting Luke goody
2:42
continues to I mean he's not streaky I
2:45
almost use the word streaky for him he's
2:46
really coming into his own it feels like
2:49
this new role of his now that Malik Renu
2:51
is not in the starting lineup and he has
2:53
filled that void this is something that
2:55
I'm not sure he anticipated coming into
2:57
the season but he is absolutely thriving
3:00
in this new role of his right now yeah
3:02
he is and and again I think a lot of
3:04
that has to do with the the players
3:06
around him now the the type of lineups
3:08
that he's playing in um and the types of
3:10
lineup that uh that Indiana's putting
3:12
out there right the the one big and I
3:14
think you see again the potential of
3:16
what that really looks like uh
3:18
especially you know in the second half
3:20
right uh not only you know specifically
3:23
when Mackenzie andb was awful for just
3:24
because he was not able to contribute
3:26
much of anything tonight but when you
3:28
have both of those Shooters on the it
3:30
not only opens up the game for every
3:32
single perimeter player it opens up the
3:34
game for whatever big man's going to be
3:36
on the floor and so when you have both
3:37
of those going for him you you saw what
3:40
the guards were able to do um with with
3:42
Trey Galloway and Miles rice being able
3:44
to attack downhill and when you have all
3:46
three of those areas of your game the
3:49
the attacking guards the perimeter
3:50
shooting and the dominant post
3:52
presence you're G to find a way to score
3:55
points and all three of these things
3:57
have really kind of snowballed over the
3:58
last three games um and Luke good is a
4:01
big part of that I mean his ability to
4:03
connect from the three-point line uh
4:05
consistently uh now after that really
4:08
tough start to the year has been you
4:10
know really fun to watch he's really
4:11
kind of grown into you know I don't even
4:15
want to say what Indiana thought because
4:17
I think he's already kind of far
4:19
exceeded what they thought they would
4:21
get from him because he's he's kind of
4:23
turned into uh a very vital part of this
4:26
team even more so than what I think a
4:28
lot of people expect him to be um and
4:31
when you look at true kind of quote
4:33
unquote glue guys which is you know the
4:35
the token term that that Everyone likes
4:37
to use um for for maybe not the the star
4:40
player but one of the more important
4:41
players I think he's exactly what uh a
4:44
glue guy should be right he plays with
4:47
great energy he plays with great
4:48
intensity he's he's definitely the best
4:50
leader on this team and he plays
4:52
consistently every single night you know
4:54
what you're going to get from him you
4:56
know exactly what his role is he knows
4:59
exactly his role is and when you have
5:01
that uh and he brings all of those
5:04
assets to your team consistently right
5:06
that that's the the true definition of
5:08
what that glue guy is and you know he's
5:10
he's now 10 of 15 come January from
5:13
three uh in the last three games um
5:16
obviously knock him down at a high rate
5:17
but now he's showing a little bit more
5:19
of that aggressiveness in actively
5:21
seeking out some of those shots that
5:23
maybe he didn't do you know maybe two
5:25
and a half three weeks ago um and that's
5:27
something that I think really can take
5:29
not only his game yes but Indiana's
5:31
offense to another level when you add
5:33
his ability to maybe put the ball on the
5:35
floor um and find some extra points
5:38
there either at the free throw line you
5:39
know getting fouled or just in the
5:41
mid-range there as
5:42
well and I don't want to leave out miles
5:45
rice he had a great game as well 19
5:47
points he seemed especially poised down
5:50
the stretch when Indiana was trying to
5:52
close out the game USC never really made
5:55
a a big run to try to get back at
5:57
Indiana but there were a couple of
5:58
moments where felt like if USC would
6:00
have been able to hit some big shots
6:02
then they could have found themselves
6:04
right back in that game but anytime
6:05
Indiana needed to to kind of pull back
6:08
ahead it felt like miles rice was kind
6:09
of the spearhead down the stretch for
6:11
for Indiana absolutely and I I think you
6:13
know he had three turnovers in the first
6:15
seven minutes of the game and then went
6:16
the next uh 24 minutes of action of his
6:21
game time without a single turnover and
6:23
really uh turned the game around with
6:25
his ability to get downhill and his
6:27
attacking ability that's when he's at
6:29
his best right attacking downhill he was
6:31
able to do that not only in transition
6:33
uh but really sped up in the secondary
6:35
break as well and and put USC on their
6:37
heels numerous times um able to get to
6:40
the line 11 times which is something
6:43
that uh you know he hasn't done
6:44
consistently enough um and sometimes
6:47
settles for maybe that you know
6:49
contested jumper or that that deeper
6:51
three when he clearly has the the
6:54
ability to get to the paint and get to
6:56
the rim whenever he wants um I think
6:58
that's just the biggest thing with him
7:00
but you we've heard mikee Woodson talk
7:01
about trying to find the the good
7:04
balance of Miles rice scoring the ball
7:06
and Miles rice making plays for his
7:08
teammates I think tonight you you
7:10
probably saw the first uh the first time
7:12
where he did both consistently from from
7:14
half to half and uh you know when you
7:17
again add in you're probably not going
7:19
to have this type of offensive
7:20
performance again every single night
7:21
from all these guys but when you add in
7:24
these pieces you you clearly see what
7:26
this team can do offensively um and
7:29
that's a a very positive thought that
7:31
you can take not only from this game but
7:33
but clearly from the last few games from
7:35
from all these pieces kind of fitting
7:37
together I heard the announcers say at
7:39
the end of the game that this 4-one
7:41
start in conference play is Indiana's
7:44
best start to a conference slate since
7:47
the 2016 the 15 16 Season where of
7:51
course they won the Big 10 Championship
7:53
with yogi frell and Company and granted
7:56
that team started off I believe 7 and0
7:58
is what they also mentioned so Indiana
8:00
can't do that or surpass it but
8:02
definitely a good company to be in when
8:05
thinking about the expectations for
8:07
Indiana moving forward with the rest of
8:09
the conference slate oh absolutely I
8:11
mean again we we've talked about how
8:12
important kind of these next few games
8:15
are for Indiana uh in their ability to
8:17
really continue to gain some of this
8:19
momentum going into that really really
8:21
difficult stretch come February and so
8:23
games like this were games that they had
8:25
to win not only you know because they
8:27
are clearly a better team and more
8:28
talented than USC but we continue to
8:32
hear right you have to defend home court
8:34
and we know how difficult it's going to
8:36
be to win on the road in the Big 10 so
8:39
you could not drop a game like uh like
8:41
like today especially if you want to try
8:42
to compete for you know one of those top
8:44
couple spots in the Big 10 regardless of
8:46
kind of where the draw uh eventually
8:48
obviously ends up in you know two months
8:50
from now Indiana will travel to Iowa on
8:54
January 11th uh of course another big
8:57
road test against uh fr mcaffrey teams
8:59
can be very tricky they're usually very
9:01
good offensively I haven't done a deep
9:03
dive into this Iowa team just yet but
9:06
will definitely be a very interesting
9:09
another road test for this Indiana team
9:12
uh and I'm sure they'll go into it as
9:13
confident as ever not only are you
9:15
riding a five-game win streak but one of
9:18
those wins of course being on the road
9:20
at Penn State just a few days ago even
9:23
though it was in a very different
9:24
environment playing at the Petra but I'm
9:27
sure Indiana will ride a lot of
9:29
confidence into Carver Hawkeye Arena
9:32
later this
9:33
weekend absolutely and you know very
9:36
difficult game that that IU's always
9:38
struggled in going at Iowa just an Iowa
9:40
program that's always a difficult team
9:42
for Indiana to face with their offensive
9:44
power um and and you know we continue to
9:47
see that this year the I was averaging
9:49
pretty near 90 points a game uh so
9:51
Indiana needs to obviously you know
9:53
bring a much better defensive effort
9:54
from the tip uh just play with a lot
9:56
more energy from the tip in general I
9:58
think that's you know we we've seen some
10:01
of these big second half runs that
10:02
Indiana's had over the last few games
10:05
but uh need to be able to bring that
10:07
from the tip and and play kind of a full
10:09
40 minutes they've played a much better
10:11
overall game uh over the past couple of
10:13
weeks and they have uh honestly for a
10:15
lot of uh the last two years uh but need
10:18
to be able to kind of make that
10:20
transition from you know maybe 25 to to
10:23
28 minutes to more 35 minute games um
10:27
when you get into the the real big heart
10:28
of Big 10 play moving forward last thing
10:31
I'll throw a comment up there Andrew
10:33
Jones says just play Bryson Tucker when
10:35
McKenzie and Bako goes cold well that
10:37
certainly worked out tonight Bryson
10:39
Tucker is a very interesting uh kind of
10:42
player for Indiana somebody who comes
10:43
off the bench he's a freshman he it
10:45
seems like he either he he really is the
10:48
streaky player for Indiana he's either
10:50
really hot one night or kind of McKenzie
10:52
and bakish if you will and not able to
10:54
hit anything and I guess the give and
10:56
take there is one of those guys may have
10:58
a good night and the other won't and and
11:00
that's kind of the situation that Indian
11:02
may be in with those two players on
11:04
occasion but uh interesting observation
11:06
by Andrew you don't have to add anything
11:07
to that if you don't want to but just
11:09
wanted to throw that comment out there
11:11
yeah I mean t typically you do get the
11:13
the much more consistent game from
11:15
McKenzie and bako and and you still have
11:17
a freshman in Bryson Tucker obviously he
11:19
play you know great tonight but but you
11:21
do limit a little bit more uh what that
11:24
perimeter game should provide uh when
11:26
you do have Bryson Tucker in the game
11:28
and and obviously K andak is not going
11:30
to go over um no any point probably
11:33
moving forward uh it's just one of those
11:35
games and and luckily you had you know
11:36
four other guys to to step up and pick
11:38
up the slack in a game that obviously
11:40
you needed
11:41
so uh we'll go and wrap this thing up
11:43
Alec any any final thoughts on where you
11:46
feel this Indiana TEAM stands right now
11:48
as they they move further into big Tim
11:51
play yeah I think you know the biggest
11:53
thing that I think a lot of people
11:55
really wanted to see was kind of what
11:57
the identity of this team uh really was
12:00
coming out of December uh getting back
12:02
into Big 10 play and there were a lot of
12:03
questions about really what this team
12:05
was right I think more questions than
12:07
answers uh past three games I think you
12:09
you see what that is and it's uh you
12:12
going to revolve around a one big lineup
12:14
moving forward I I I truly think the the
12:16
more that we see this and it's probably
12:19
gonna again be a couple of weeks um I I
12:22
I think that's going to be what is the
12:25
Catalyst for Indiana moving forward
12:27
whether that's Malik new or Omar Balo
12:30
but the play of Omar Balo as of late I
12:32
think you're starting to see him really
12:34
turn a corner this is exactly what we
12:36
saw with col we last year is starting in
12:39
January moving into the end of the
12:40
season he averaged 17 and 11 and was the
12:43
the key featured player of that offense
12:46
you're you're now starting to see that
12:47
exact same feature uh in the offense
12:49
with Omar Balo and it's a it's a type of
12:52
dominant performance that uh you know
12:55
slightly different than how kware did it
12:57
uh but not many guys are going to be
12:58
able to
12:59
Omar Balo and he continues to have this
13:01
sort of effort and motor um and you know
13:04
again say say whatever you want from you
13:06
know that winr game that he missed uh
13:09
know four games ago he's he's turned a
13:11
corner since then and and obviously
13:12
Indiana has as well and there's no
13:14
coincidence that both happened at the
13:16
exact same time it's been good to see
13:19
Indiana answer the call so far into the
13:21
year
13:22
2025 and hopefully they'll be able to
13:25
continue to carry this momentum into the
13:27
games moving forward Alec I appreciate
