welcome to the first regular season
0:03
edition of The hooer Illustrated domcom
0:05
basketball postgame wrap-up show John
0:08
Alden of in touch with Indiana Sports
0:11
and basketball recruiting analyst Kyler
0:13
Staley with you this evening following
0:16
Indiana's
0:17
80-61 season opening Victory against SIU
0:21
Edwardsville a very sloppy game all
0:24
around with some good some bad the good
0:27
definitely being McKenzie and bak's
0:29
career T night uh you know in the season
0:31
opener very impressive to see the jump
0:33
that he made some sloppy defensive play
0:37
Kyler go before I mention everything
0:39
I'll I'll toss it over to you what were
0:40
kind of your observations from tonight's
0:43
opener at Assembly Hall yeah not not the
0:45
not the prettiest game by any stretch of
0:47
the means but I think Indiana started
0:49
off the game with really good intentions
0:51
I thought the pace was pretty much well
0:52
set I think Indiana wanted to you know
0:55
control that pace and play fast but um
0:59
you know just they got a little bit too
1:01
fast you say that and that's where the
1:02
sloppiness came and then of course you
1:04
know you have a big night from Mackenzie
1:06
and Bako 31 points 13 of 17 four of five
1:10
from three I mean just spectacular and
1:12
obviously Indiana didn't obviously shoot
1:14
as a team total wise didn't shoot the
1:16
three ball very well but same time
1:18
McKenzie Bako he he really got them out
1:20
of really stagnant stretches I would say
1:22
tonight um Malik Renu had some good
1:25
signs as well he he showed upar ballow
1:27
showed up as well but um this team you
1:30
can definitely tell based off watching
1:32
their first real game of the season
1:33
they're working progress um I I think
1:36
it's going to take time for this team to
1:37
just kind of gel a little bit figure out
1:39
you know when to play fast when to slow
1:40
things down and just you know just take
1:43
care of those turnovers because those
1:44
turnovers are just killers and back
1:45
Breakers and you know siou is not you
1:48
know a nationally great team or anything
1:50
but I mean they got some guys on that
1:52
that's going to take advantage so um
1:54
definitely a work in progress but uh you
1:56
know you saw some good signs tonight
1:59
four or five starters and double figures
2:01
but there was one starter who didn't
2:03
manage to get on the board at all
2:04
tonight and that was Kanan Carlile why
2:06
do you feel like it was difficult for
2:08
him to really find a rhythm tonight you
2:11
know also I mean he he he struggled so
2:13
what he he played the Tennessee game um
2:16
struggled in that one didn't play Maran
2:18
game because of some bruis ribs so I
2:20
mean there's a lot going on with him I I
2:21
think you know he he's fighting injuries
2:23
he's in a new system he's trying to find
2:25
a new Rhythm a New Groove and everything
2:27
but I was talking to Dylan um one of our
2:29
staff writers you know at who
2:30
realist.com during this game and I was
2:32
like you know what I mean people can
2:34
build Canan Carlile to be this offensive
2:36
guy the shooter whatever that's not
2:38
really what he is I mean if if he's a
2:40
guy that you know Buys in on the
2:42
defensive end which tonight he really
2:44
did there was really good moments on the
2:45
defensive end by him he he was locking
2:47
down players um you know really guarding
2:49
the ball very very well so if he can be
2:51
that guy for Indiana I think that that
2:54
could be his role in a lot of ways but I
2:56
think right now he's just finding
2:57
himself trying to get comfortable in a
2:59
new system in a new style of play it'll
3:01
comfort him it's just going to take a
3:02
little bit of time not much going on
3:05
From the Bench tonight you did get a
3:07
pretty decent performance from Trey
3:08
Galloway especially in the second half
3:10
at least from what I could see but
3:11
outside of that outside of Trey
3:13
Galloway's six points he only got two
3:15
from Bryon Tucker nothing from Gabe CBS
3:18
and Luke goody I know Gabe CBS only
3:19
played about five minutes but Luke goody
3:22
with 20 minutes on the floor not able to
3:25
translate any of that into baskets do
3:27
you think we saw him struggle against
3:29
Tennessee as well do you think it's
3:30
going to take a while for him to kind of
3:32
get into a rhythm with this new system
3:34
that he's a part of do I think it'll
3:36
take a while that that's a good question
3:39
I I don't think so honestly I think for
3:41
Luke goody it's gonna take one game it's
3:43
gonna take one game for him to just
3:44
start knocking down shots you know find
3:46
that Rhythm and get in that Groove kind
3:47
of like car l in way he's in a new
3:49
system he's in a new not really a new
3:51
role he he's a shooter that's what he's
3:53
been his whole life but you know he's in
3:55
a new environment it it's I don't want
3:57
to say it's going to take time I think
3:58
it's just going to take a game take a
3:59
game for him to break out of that funk
4:01
take get some shots you mentioned the
4:02
bench in general I think when Indiana
4:05
really started to struggle was when Mike
4:06
Woodson went full bench and uh put
4:08
everybody in you saw you know the the
4:10
offense really got stagnant a lot of
4:12
standing around you know Trey Galloway
4:14
was trying to be the quarterback out
4:15
there um but things just weren't really
4:17
working and Mike Woodson said it in his
4:19
postgame presser the ball really wasn't
4:21
moving the bodies were moving the ball
4:22
wasn't really moving but you saw Mike
4:24
Woodson you know instantly go back to
4:26
his starter start to slowly put those
4:27
guys back in one by one things start to
4:29
pick up up a little bit um I just think
4:32
you know there's a lot of new pieces
4:33
with this team for any new team there is
4:35
it's not going to chil right away not
4:36
even an offense an off season you know a
4:39
whole spring a whole summer is really
4:41
going to make that thing complete I it
4:43
takes games like this it takes games to
4:45
figure things out they know how talented
4:47
they are Indiana fans know how talented
4:49
this team is they will figure it out it
4:51
just takes more and more games like this
4:52
it's going to take probably you know
4:54
until the South Carolina game for them
4:56
to have a really really good feel of
4:58
what they can do and how to play with
4:59
each other
5:00
um before you start getting deeper into
5:02
the season and the Big 10 season as
5:04
well yeah and definitely felt like there
5:07
was a decent amount of overreacting
5:09
online which that that is to be expected
5:11
and and not I'm not trying to act like
5:13
the the fan bases representative of what
5:16
happens online but there has been a lot
5:19
of buildup over the last really year or
5:21
so of just whenever you don't see and
5:25
maybe I'm not giving Indiana enough
5:26
credit here they did win the game by 19
5:28
points they didn't cover but they did
5:30
find a way to finally pull away from a
5:33
very pesky SIU Edwardsville team that
5:36
did a really good job at hanging
5:38
around but at the same time we've seen
5:41
this story plenty of times where Indiana
5:44
does let teams like this hang around and
5:46
I think the biggest issue with it
5:48
specifically is just the fact that these
5:51
are the types of games where if if this
5:53
happens frequently it doesn't help you
5:55
when it comes to you know the net
5:57
ratings which become very important as
5:59
you get toward towards the end of the
6:00
season and I just think that's something
6:03
that if you continue to see more of
6:05
these lower caliber opponents because
6:07
Indiana does play a decent amount of
6:09
them this year and you don't take care
6:11
of them more uh I don't know if
6:15
consistently is the right word but just
6:17
more dominantly than than a team like
6:19
this maybe you run into some issues down
6:21
the road well let's think about this
6:23
last season this game probably would
6:24
have been a five-point win by Indiana
6:26
let's think and that's fair and that
6:27
would be much worse than 19 points
6:30
absolutely so the big thing obviously
6:31
you go back to last season and I know we
6:33
harp on a little bit it's a brand new
6:34
season but the only thing I'm going to
6:35
say is this last season one of the big
6:38
reasons why Indiana didn't make the NC
6:39
NCAA tournament was because the metrics
6:41
hated them and they hated them because
6:43
they stuck around with game teams like
6:45
this you know winning by couple
6:46
possessions and things like that I know
6:48
Indiana fans wanted this team to win
6:50
they wanted to see a 40 point plus
6:52
victory tonight yes that would have been
6:55
great if it happened but at the same
6:57
time like I mentioned this team is brand
6:59
new know there's a lot of new pieces
7:00
you're trying to figure things out they
7:02
can build off of this they certainly can
7:04
build off of this and you're going to
7:05
see this off season because they do have
7:07
some very I guess you could say poor
7:09
teams coming into Assembly Hall you're
7:11
going to see games where they win by 30
7:13
plus points or so I will take 19o
7:16
Victory right now first game of the
7:18
season extremely I mean obviously it was
7:21
sloppy but they still won by 19 points
7:24
and they figured out a way to win and
7:26
they kind of fought I don't want to say
7:27
through adversity but they fought
7:29
through some some sloppiness and they
7:30
figure things out on the Fly and that's
7:32
what a good team does right now they
7:35
just need to figure out how to make
7:37
things work consistently on the floor
7:38
when to play fast when to push the pace
7:41
when to slow things down and just when
7:42
to be careful in certain situations
7:44
they'll be fine Indiana will be fine
7:46
there's too much talent on this team for
7:47
it not to be fine and they will figure
7:49
it out 19point victory tonight you take
7:52
that and you just got to see what they
7:53
can build off the next game want to get
7:56
back to more of a positive thing before
7:57
we wrap this thing up here tonight back
7:59
to McKenzie and Bako specifically do you
8:01
think he'll be able to replicate
8:04
performances like this in multiple games
8:07
like I I know that he was very
8:10
much the beginning of McKenzie and bak's
8:12
career in Indiana last year to the
8:14
second half of his freshman season was a
8:16
big jump now it seems like we may
8:18
already be seeing the beginning of
8:19
another big jump at the beginning of a
8:21
sophomore season do you think that he's
8:23
going to show nights like this more
8:26
frequently and also do you think he
8:28
could end up being maybe Indiana's most
8:30
important player especially offensively
8:33
this year potentially that's a lot of
8:35
good questions honestly do will I do I
8:37
think I'll see more big games do you
8:39
think we'll see more big games out of
8:41
Mackenzie and bako this season
8:42
absolutely 30 30 plus points maybe a
8:44
little bit of a stretch because there's
8:46
a lot of Talent on this team and the the
8:48
the wealth is going to be spread you
8:50
know throughout the whole entire season
8:51
with this team and Trey Gallow kind of
8:53
mentioned it you know it's important for
8:55
this team to figure out okay whose night
8:57
is it you know when they're in the game
8:58
when they're in in-game settings tonight
9:00
it was McKenzie and bak's night but next
9:02
game it could be miles Rice's night the
9:04
game after that could be Malik ru's
9:05
night there's so much balance on this
9:07
team I think you know consistently will
9:10
Mackenzie and bako you know go off like
9:12
he does I don't think so but that's not
9:14
a knock on mckenzi and bako it's just
9:16
because there's a lot of pieces on this
9:18
team and you just got to figure out
9:19
early on okay who who's feeling it
9:21
tonight who's playing out of their mind
9:23
you know and feeding that guy and doing
9:25
certain things to get those guys good
9:26
looks tonight was McKenzie and bakos
9:28
night you're going to see big games out
9:29
of him I just don't know if it's going
9:31
to be consistently you know 20 plus
9:33
points a night and it's definitely an
9:35
early indicator where when Indiana
9:37
eventually finds themselves in a
9:38
position where they need somebody to
9:40
make a bucket down the stretch maybe
9:43
McKenzie and bako ends up being that guy
9:45
for Indiana that just wants the ball in
9:47
his hands because he knows he's going to
9:49
find a way to get it into the basket and
9:51
again maybe I'm overreacting to that but
9:53
it is just something to potentially keep
9:55
an eye on I feel like yeah and the last
9:57
thing I'll say with Mackenzie and Baku
9:58
is you know he he mentioned it in the
10:00
postgame presser he just plays through
10:01
his teammates that's what he does and he
10:03
he said this off season he said he he
10:06
may someone asked him you know what did
10:08
you work on offensively this off season
10:10
to get better he said I mostly worked on
10:12
defense because I realized that defense
10:14
creates offense and that's what you saw
10:16
tonight he was bought in on the
10:18
defensive end that got his motor up this
10:20
was the highest motor that I've ever
10:21
seen Mackenzie Baco play with crashing
10:23
the boards competing on the defensive
10:25
end getting out in transition and just
10:26
you know being aggressive and that's
10:28
what he's doing he plays within the
10:30
system he plays within his teammates and
10:32
uh as long as he continues to do that
10:34
he's going to be really special for this
10:35
team and there's a lot of potential for
10:37
him when it comes to you know the NBA
10:39
first team all big 10 and all those
10:41
accolades the 17th ranked Indiana hooers
10:44
off to a one and0 start on the season
10:46
with a 80-61 victory over SIU
10:49
Edwardsville they'll be back in action
10:51
on Sunday the 10th against Eastern
10:53
Illinois 12 o'clock on big Tim plus
10:56
their only game uh on at least in the
10:58
regular season that'll be on Big 10 plus
11:00
you will have some other games on
11:02
peacock and you know things like that
11:04
but uh until then Kyler appreciate you
11:07
you know taking a few minutes to let us
11:08
know what you saw from really your
11:10
perspective at Assembly Hall tonight and
11:12
we'll we'll have plenty more of these to
11:14
come later this year my friend
11:16
