Indiana football postgame wrap-up show
0:08
John Alden and Alec lley here with you
0:11
on a Sunday morning I'm feeling a lot
0:13
better right now Alec than I uh thought
0:16
I would be had we done this immediately
0:18
after the game yesterday afternoon uh
0:22
and we we may or may not get into those
0:24
specifics but uh because we're here to
0:26
talk about what happened with Indiana
0:27
Ohio State first and foremost but the
0:29
who your lose 38- 15 suffer their first
0:32
loss on the season now 10 And1 7-1 in
0:35
conference play and uh squarely still in
0:39
the playoff hunt and again we'll get
0:41
we'll get to that here in a little bit
0:42
but Alec just give me your initial
0:44
thoughts on what went down at the
0:46
Horseshoe yesterday yeah I mean I I I
0:48
think you look at you know how the game
0:50
started right I think everyone was
0:51
pretty excited not only the three and
0:53
out to begin you go down and score and
0:56
not only do you have a lot of momentum
0:58
but you you look exactly how you kind of
1:01
thought that they would look every other
1:03
game right and then I think there was
1:04
just a little bit of that nerve going
1:06
into this one about exactly how they
1:07
would show up and that kind of
1:09
eliminated all that right there um not
1:11
only did the offensive line look look
1:15
great at the start that was really the
1:18
the key switch in my opinion was the the
1:21
the front seven uh for Ohio State
1:24
defensively and how they really took
1:26
over the game um and then on the flip
1:28
side the front seven for Indiana and
1:30
their inability to attack will Howard
1:33
after it happened almost at the exact
1:36
same moment of the game where both of
1:38
those offensive and defensive lines that
1:40
momentum totally shifted um after about
1:43
the second or third possession I want to
1:45
say uh they're kind of into the first
1:47
quarter going into the second and
1:50
Indiana was you know inable to uh uh get
1:54
any sort of uh pressure in the back
1:56
field so will Howard just literally sat
1:59
back and had all the Time in the World
2:01
to throw and not only did he do that but
2:04
then all those open field tackles that
2:06
Indiana was making to begin the game
2:08
they were missing and so you get maybe a
2:11
a little five yard dump out route for
2:14
the Ohio State wide outs and then they
2:16
would go you know 10 15 yards after the
2:19
catch because of one or two missed
2:20
tackles um and then obviously you know
2:22
ctis for just had absolutely no time to
2:24
throw the ball um what was was clearly
2:27
the the worst uh performance from
2:30
the offense all year but but
2:31
specifically the offensive line and the
2:34
running backs in the pass protection and
2:36
that was just the most concerning part
2:37
and that obviously was uh was the main
2:40
reason why they they lost that game
2:41
because they couldn't drop back to pass
2:43
and and they were so one-dimensional uh
2:45
and then again on the flip side they
2:47
just couldn't get any any pressure at
2:48
all uh in that Ohio State backfield
2:51
another thing that was also a big gut
2:53
punch at least especially when we've
2:55
seen how consistent Indiana special
2:57
teams have been all year giving up two
3:00
touchdowns in that department and I know
3:02
one wasn't a direct touchdown the you
3:04
know the Muff snap or whatever you want
3:05
to call it by James Evans that wasn't
3:09
directly it didn't immediately go from a
3:11
touchdown from that play but it set up
3:12
an Ohio State touchdown then you have
3:14
the Caleb Downs punt return it's a
3:17
14-point swing right there and if you
3:19
eliminate that which again it is part of
3:21
the game so you can't completely
3:22
eliminate it that the score is a much
3:24
more respectable 24- 15 if you get rid
3:28
of those special teams touchdowns so uh
3:30
a lot of things not going right for Indi
3:32
yesterday and and while you were talking
3:34
about the offense I also was thinking
3:35
about all the drops and not only this
3:38
week have we seen some some drops from
3:40
Indiana's receivers that were kind of in
3:43
pressure situations we saw that a couple
3:45
weeks ago whenever they face Michigan as
3:46
well particularly with Elijah Sarat Mr
3:49
Waffle House who is always open uh he
3:52
may need to stop putting some extra
3:54
syrup on his waffles if he's going to be
3:56
open all the time because I mean he's
3:58
got to start catching balls again right
3:59
that may have been the the worst joke I
4:01
could have made but uh I I I went there
4:04
I did just go there so uh a lot of
4:07
things unfortunately we uncharacteristic
4:10
of this Indiana football team uh that we
4:12
have seen at least last over the course
4:16
of the game this past Saturday uh and
4:18
they'll have one more chance to get back
4:21
on the right track of course when they
4:22
face Purdue this Saturday in a night
4:24
game Edition in the battle for the old
4:26
Oaken Bucket of course you want to clock
4:28
in a good performance there because if
4:31
it wasn't if if it wasn't the case
4:33
already it is now your your playoff
4:35
hopes are on the line and and not that
4:37
Purdue as an opponent that Indiana
4:39
should you know be worried about losing
4:41
against you still want to prepare the
4:43
same way that you have all season long
4:45
you don't want to have a bad week of
4:46
practice and give Purdue any reason to
4:50
be excited about potentially spoiling
4:53
your your postseason aspirations because
4:55
that's if if if they have anything to
4:57
play for it's that yeah absolutely and I
5:00
think it you know one major part of that
5:01
game uh you know yesterday that that I
5:04
think they can definitely take away
5:06
right is is uh the the compounding kind
5:09
of small mistakes that Indiana had not
5:12
made all season and that's why I think
5:15
you you look at you look at that game in
5:17
obviously Ohio state was clearly the
5:18
better team yesterday but there were you
5:21
know that obviously the The Botch snap
5:23
there um even if they do return that
5:26
punt for the touchdown right if that
5:27
botch snap doesn't happen who knows what
5:29
happens that next possession uh if
5:31
there's a couple of those drops that the
5:32
IU wide outs don't uh don't drop and
5:35
actually do catch and and continue to
5:37
move that ball that that Phantom right
5:40
uh false start call yeah actually sorry
5:43
to cut you off I meant to bring that up
5:44
earlier because and I know this isn't
5:47
the reason that Indiana lost of course
5:50
right but from the moment that that
5:52
Phantom false start happened that's when
5:55
things went off the rails for Indiana
5:56
and never quite got back on them and one
5:59
thing that really bothered me from
6:01
watching this on TV they didn't show the
6:04
replay to see if James bomba moved at
6:06
all they and the the the broadcast team
6:09
just kind of moved on from it and there
6:11
have been a few instances previously
6:13
where Ohio state had penalties where
6:14
they were you know commenting on it
6:16
saying maybe that shouldn't have been a
6:17
penalty on Ohio State and then they get
6:19
to this and it ends up being a big
6:21
momentum swinger and they just kind of
6:24
you know move on from it again I don't
6:26
want to dwell on that too much I didn't
6:27
want to share my thoughts on that
6:28
specifically because it is just kind of
6:32
baffling how important it ended up being
6:35
but maybe wasn't realized at the time
6:38
the importance of it yeah absolutely I
6:40
mean that that entirely you know changed
6:42
any sort of uh potential momentum in
6:45
that game and and and flipped that
6:46
entirely to Ohio State and and like you
6:48
said I mean there there was they
6:49
absolutely glossed over um everything to
6:52
do with that call and I think a lot of
6:54
Indiana fans were extremely confused did
6:57
did you ever go back and actually rewat
7:00
I did yeah because they he definitely
7:02
did not move no and he he he moved also
7:06
after uh whoever the defensive lineman
7:08
there for uh Ohio State jumped and and
7:11
knocked over uh into into the the I side
7:15
that's yeah yeah was it K that would
7:17
have been a first down Indiana and then
7:19
when you have being a false start it's
7:21
when Curtis Ro gets sacked it's
7:23
completely again completely different
7:25
stuff and we'll move on from from there
7:27
I don't want to make it sound like we're
7:28
just going to about the officials
7:29
the entire time because we're not yeah
7:31
but that was still very egregious yeah
7:34
and you know you know outside of that um
7:36
you know the the major just eye poppy
7:38
number for me was you let's let's take
7:40
away the two uh two possessions that
7:42
ended in the touchdowns you know the
7:44
very first possession and then pretty
7:46
much that last possession outside of
7:48
that they had 31 plays for 28 total
7:50
yards and that is
7:52
just obviously inexcusable as any team
7:55
that that you're trying to you know
7:56
compete in a top five matchup but also
7:59
for Indiana that just you know for for a
8:01
team that has been able to move the ball
8:03
at will and pretty much respond to any
8:05
sort of uh adversity on the offensive
8:07
side that that was the uh most you know
8:10
concerning eye popping number there for
8:12
me and and obviously a lot of it had to
8:14
do with that offensive line production
8:16
and that inability to uh get any sort of
8:18
pass protection um and obviously some of
8:21
those drops but I I I think you know
8:23
Kurt zetti talked about it uh after the
8:25
game that uh they they just did not
8:28
respond to it any sort of ad well uh you
8:30
know pretty much from halftime on and
8:32
then they they just were I I think a
8:35
little bit probably the first time all
8:37
year that that we saw this team uh just
8:40
caught up in in the moment a little bit
8:42
too much and it just seemed I don't want
8:45
to say that the moment was too big
8:47
because I I I truly think that this team
8:49
is still a very very good football team
8:51
and and definitely deserving of a spot
8:53
in the college football playoff but it
8:55
it they've just never been in that type
8:59
of moment before and I think it was
9:01
before the game um I think it was Nick
9:03
sain talking about it or maybe even Ryan
9:06
day as well when he was on uh college
9:09
game day but you know Ohio State
9:11
specifically right always in these top
9:14
five matchups top two matchups top 10
9:16
matchups and always late in the season
9:18
right whether it's bigton championships
9:20
whether it's you know the Ohio State
9:22
Michigan game that that always caps off
9:24
the season right if it's a Penn State
9:25
game that they're always playing in
9:27
obviously they had the Oregon game
9:28
earlier this year
9:29
they they
9:30
are as much as you probably don't want
9:33
to say it from an Indiana's perspective
9:34
they are just way more built for that
9:36
type of moment at this point not to say
9:39
that Indiana can't get there and
9:41
probably will eventually if uh the
9:44
success continues at this level that
9:46
we've seen but that was the first time I
9:48
think you you really look at this team
9:50
and say okay specifically for this group
9:53
this was probably the the one time that
9:55
they were just way overmatched because
9:58
of that specific moment this was your
10:00
welcome to the big leagues moment for
10:02
Indiana football and as long as Kurt
10:04
Signet is able to continue to you know
10:06
do what he's done so far with Indiana in
10:08
year one they will get used to playing
10:10
in environments like this more often and
10:13
one thing you hope you don't become as
10:15
Penn State because again they've been in
10:17
that upper echelon of the Big 10 for
10:19
some time now but they they've struggled
10:21
in these games I don't know what James
10:23
Franklin's record against top
10:25
competition is but it's not good it's
10:26
not good at all um I mean pin State
10:29
again they take care of business outside
10:31
of that so you know it kind of balances
10:33
itself out but that was Indiana's first
10:36
taste of of of trying to get to that you
10:39
know Kurt cetti mentions emerging
10:41
superpower well to get to that full
10:43
superpower status you have to you have
10:45
to beat some of those teams eventually
10:46
and again it's he's 0 for one and you
10:48
know there's nothing there's nothing
10:50
shameful about losing to Ohio State on
10:52
the road especially Ohio State te yeah
10:55
especially an Ohio State team that is
10:57
more than likely one of the two or three
10:59
best teams in the country this year and
11:01
uh you know I'm just happy to say that
11:03
this team is still likely going to be in
11:05
the college football playoff and we can
11:06
wrap up with this the SEC teams that
11:09
were aspiring playoff teams Alec they
11:12
did Indiana a whole lot of favors last
11:14
night and that includes an Alabama loss
11:17
to Oklahoma a Florida win against ol
11:20
miss or I should say an Old Miss loss to
11:22
Florida if I'm you know using the same
11:24
format of my wording right and then uh
11:27
Auburn defeating Texas A&M and quadruple
11:30
overtime not to mention a couple of Big
11:32
12 upsets Arizona State beating BYU and
11:35
Kansas knocking off number 16 Colorado
11:38
so chaos a plenty in college football
11:41
last night and I don't really think
11:43
Indiana fans should have any reason to
11:45
think they won't be included in this
11:46
week's top 12 yeah absolutely and I
11:50
think you look at all those and right
11:52
the the one uh one difference is outside
11:55
I think it was yeah the BYU Arizona
11:57
State game right all those other teams
12:00
that lost were to unranked opponents and
12:02
to two opponents with maybe five wins I
12:04
think I I don't think any one of those
12:06
had over five so you you look at the the
12:09
vastly different uh type of loss and uh
12:13
you know obviously Alabama got
12:15
absolutely manhandled um in in that game
12:18
I think that you know pretty much
12:19
cements their uh their season here uh
12:22
especially when it comes to the college
12:23
football playoff I think there's
12:25
probably still going to be some some
12:26
gripe around Old Miss um because they
12:29
they obviously kept that a lot closer uh
12:31
when you kind of compare that that Miss
12:33
and Alabama resume right now but you
12:35
know outside of that it was probably the
12:38
the best day that you could have had
12:39
from an Indiana perspective when it
12:41
comes to the uh the rankings and the the
12:43
projections uh obviously all they had to
12:46
do was win and there was no discussion
12:48
whatsoever but um there there's a reason
12:50
why there there's not uh a ton of
12:53
undefeated teams uh that go through
12:55
college football every single year so uh
12:57
you're you're probably going to slip up
12:59
once they did um but that loss uh is
13:03
much better than any of these other
13:05
losses and now teams that have three
13:07
losses uh that were kind of in that that
13:10
same conversation uh to get in I I don't
13:14
I I'm I'm still a little bit hesitant
13:16
because I I still think there's probably
13:18
going to be some SEC brand bias because
13:20
there there always has there always will
13:23
um but I I think you can clearly look at
13:26
this Indiana path and again assuming
13:29
that they win uh against Purdue next
13:33
weekend they they have to be in uh at
13:36
this at this point because of everything
13:38
that happened yesterday and because of
13:39
again they beaten everyone not only
13:41
beaten everyone that they're supposed to
13:43
but absolutely manhandled everyone that
13:45
they've uh uh that they faced and
13:47
they've looked great doing it and they
13:49
they don't have that that really bad
13:51
loss that all these other teams do now
13:53
um so I think you look at Indiana's
13:55
perur uh you know resume and from that
13:57
perspective I think you have to be very
13:58
happy obvious ly what what happened
14:00
yesterday and I'll say this I know that
14:02
there's been a lot of brand bias
14:04
nationally at least from the pundits the
14:06
Talking Heads but I don't get the sense
14:08
that the committee themselves
14:11
undervalues Indiana the way that it
14:13
seems like the people that talk about
14:14
the rankings do right because we have
14:16
the ranking show and like the rankings
14:19
the people who do the ranking show and
14:21
the committee are two separate entities
14:22
I think sometimes it's easy to get those
14:24
confused and think they're one of the
14:25
same and they're not because during
14:28
those ranking shows especially the last
14:30
couple of weeks it feels like all they
14:31
do is and gripe about Indiana
14:34
which is very odd if we're being honest
14:37
and where we we've seen them Place
14:40
Indiana at number five especially before
14:42
this week whenever they had a Buy and
14:43
they didn't drop them in any way shape
14:45
or form based on results from teams that
14:47
were behind them I think it does show
14:50
that they value what Indiana has done
14:52
and they clearly value Ohio State as
14:54
well they know Ohio State's a really
14:55
good team I don't anticipate Indiana
14:58
dropping and any lower than 10 this
15:00
Tuesday maybe that's wishful thinking to
15:02
some people but based on the results
15:04
that we mentioned earlier I think
15:06
Indiana will still comfortably
15:08
comfortably be sitting at 10 maybe even
15:11
better depending on again how how much
15:13
they actually value this Indiana team
15:15
yeah it's going to be very interesting
15:16
obviously this is going to be the you
15:18
know the one uh ranking show that not
15:20
only is going to decide a lot for
15:21
Indiana uh right because they don't have
15:24
that extra uh that extra game unless you
15:26
know things really fall apart here next
15:29
week in terms of getting to the Big 10
15:30
Championship um and they don't have that
15:32
notable uh season finale against the
15:35
team that they could move up with the
15:37
win you know based off of that so um
15:40
it's going to be interesting to see
15:41
where they they fall because I think
15:44
they they just don't have a lot of other
15:45
room to uh to get up in the in the
15:47
rankings and Rise there after after that
15:49
Purdue game um and they're going to have
15:51
to kind of sit back and you know watch
15:52
everything unfold which I think is
15:54
probably going to be extremely
15:55
nerve-wracking for a guy like Kurt edti
15:57
who always wants to be in control
15:59
uh of things and and be in kind of
16:01
control of his own destiny there um but
16:03
I I I do think that the uh the committee
16:07
does absolutely value again the the full
16:09
body of work um multiple different
16:12
metrics right it's not just strength the
16:14
schedule uh that a lot of people
16:16
obviously continue to point at for
16:17
Indiana um speaking of that I don't know
16:19
if you notice this Alec but because of
16:21
them playing Ohio State yesterday their
16:23
strength schedule jumped up to 51 or
16:26
something like that so it's not even I
16:27
mean it's still
16:29
kind of relevant but at the same time
16:31
it's they they finally played that
16:33
Marquee opponent it was just so late in
16:35
the season everything kind of evens out
16:37
it seems like at least a little bit Yeah
16:39
like it always does right I mean you
16:41
obviously see the SEC teams with a lot
16:43
of other um you know out ofc conference
16:46
matchups right the Georgia UMass game
16:47
yesterday uh that that I think um the
16:50
committee looks at especially playing at
16:52
this point of year of the season and
16:54
kind of uh undervalues some of those as
16:56
well but um yeah all in all I mean I
16:59
think you I think we talked about it
17:01
yesterday too John that right around
17:03
that 10 Mark is probably where you're
17:04
you're going to see Indiana and I I
17:06
think that's that's feasible I think
17:07
that's also deserving um but uh it will
17:11
be now very interesting to see how much
17:13
of that full body of work is actually
17:15
taken into account because this was the
17:17
one measuring stick that that Indiana
17:19
had and it wasn't a a great performance
17:24
I think it was a very good first half um
17:26
so I think you look at that and you have
17:28
to be um from a committee's perspective
17:30
and and look at kind of how that game
17:32
played out and I think that score is a
17:34
lot different than maybe um you know
17:37
what the the game actually uh felt like
17:40
uh because it did feel at times a lot
17:42
closer uh where one or two plays could
17:44
have sparked uh uh you know any sort of
17:46
momentum and obviously that didn't
17:47
happen so you can't you know fully play
17:49
that you know hypothetical game but um
17:52
it just seemed at times it was a lot
17:54
closer than uh than what that score
17:56
obviously indicated at the end of the
17:57
day we'll get the chance next week to
17:59
see how a Signet team at Indiana for the
18:02
first time will respond to a loss so
18:04
we'll get that uh you know with Indiana
18:06
Purdue next Saturday and hopefully we're
18:07
talking about 11 and one and you know
18:10
college football playoff stuff it's uh
18:12
still exciting times for Indiana
18:14
football and I've enjoyed this ride and
18:16
hopefully continues so this has been a
18:19
uh Morning Edition morning after Edition
18:21
Alec thank you so much for for coming on
18:23
and doing this and you know since we
18:25
didn't get one out after the game
18:26
yesterday yeah no absolutely I think it
18:29
it's better so we had some time to kind
18:31
of see how things did play out and that
18:34
that was one of the reasons why uh you
18:36
know we kind of talked about it just
18:37
because there there was a lot that could
18:39
have happened yesterday um and like we
18:41
said obviously a lot went in Indiana's
18:43
favor regardless of that result so I
18:45
wanted to see kind of how everything
18:46
played out before we uh jumped on and
18:48
started talking about what was obviously
18:50
you know a massive game for for Indiana
18:53
and a disappointing result but uh All
18:54
Things Considered I think uh like we
18:56
said level heads always prevail right
19:01
sometimes all right until then we'll
19:03
have in touch with Indiana Sports
19:04
tomorrow Mitchell pige should be joining
19:06
me as usual to give his thoughts on
19:08
everything that went down and then we
19:10
have a big basketball week coming up
19:11
with the battle for Atlanta so a lot of
19:13
good stuff to talk about be sure to
19:15
check out everything going on at whoer
19:17
Illustrated decom and the YouTube
19:18
channel as well whoer Illustrated and uh
19:21
until then this has been another edition
19:23
of the Indiana football postgame wrap-up
19:25
