I think it it's been that for quite some
0:02
time especially among you know hardcore
0:05
college football fans I think that
0:07
there's a tribalism there is in in a
0:09
good way there's a sense of community
0:12
that college football brings and I would
0:14
argue that no other sport really touches
0:17
and I know this is basketball country
0:18
and there's a lot to be said for that
0:20
but basketball plays a lot more often
0:22
and the football season short and
0:26
everything points to a single day and
0:29
this show
0:30
I mean I've been on it 10 years for PR
0:32
days my time sort of uh is a touchstone
0:37
moment for start today and I think it I
0:40
hope that it's recognized by people that
0:43
there are a lot of people on the set who
0:46
aren't just up there performing they're
0:47
up there because they love college
0:50
football and hopefully that comes across
0:52
and I think because of that the genuine
0:53
nature of it the way the show has
0:55
evolved over the years whether it be by
0:58
adding different people just a different
1:00
approach to the way we uh look at the
1:02
show I think all those things have have
1:04
allowed it to maintain and grow
1:06
throughout time at a time when when
1:09
shows like ours aren't really growing in
1:11
other portions of Television yet we are
1:13
we're very grateful to the pink BL watch
1:15
C of seem to enjoy going to new places
1:19
and I know you guys were here in 2017
1:21
for a Thursday night game big ass risk
1:24
beside that visit it was fun it was
1:25
great but it wasn't this recalling that
1:29
experience what are you looking forward
1:30
to most tomorrow I'm looking forward to
1:32
actually being among the Indiana fans I
1:35
mean we were in the stadium in 2017 and
1:38
it was a great night and people were
1:40
excited but there's a little something
1:42
different about having our full
1:44
footprint of the show and the full three
1:47
hours and uh starting the day of
1:49
football and then even today being able
1:51
to or tomorrow rather go into the
1:53
stadium for kickoff it's just a
1:55
different vibe and a different energy
1:57
about that when you started early in the
1:59
morning people I'm sure are going to
2:01
camp out and we're going to have a huge
2:02
crowd and they're going to be loud and
2:04
excited and there's just something
2:06
energizing about that and I think it's a
2:08
I think it's a lot different when we go
2:10
someplace where we haven't been before
2:13
when we go to Ohio State when we go to
2:15
Alabama we're treated well we treated
2:17
great wonderful people but it's almost
2:19
like hey you guys are back oh did did
2:21
did you guys pay the uh you guys pay the
2:24
property taxes and everything I know
2:25
we're all neighbors here you know it's
2:26
like they're used to seeing us and when
2:28
we come here when we went to cow a few
2:30
weeks ago there's a different kind of a
2:32
different kind of energy about it for
2:33
sure how about your thought Valu the
2:35
kind of team that they had in it's it's
2:37
been remarkable the first thing I
2:39
noticed because
2:40
I I I'll be fully transparent about this
2:44
Tino sineri is a friend of mine has been
2:46
for a long time his dad and I are
2:47
friends who's coach of Colorado and so
2:49
when when they got this job I I made it
2:52
a point I watched the UCLA game and I
2:55
was like Wow first game there the the
2:59
adjective I've used as Crisp And what I
3:01
mean by that is they execute they're not
3:03
sloppy there's not confusion uh a lot of
3:06
that is attributable to you know to Shan
3:10
coach Shanahan coach zetti Tino and and
3:13
really to Curtis I mean he's a veteran
3:15
guy who orchestrated the offense very
3:17
well defense plays with a lot of lot of
3:19
intensity and aggression and I think it
3:22
looks a lot like Kurt's teams at James
3:24
Madison you know they were they were
3:26
crisp and they won and it's uh you know
3:29
I I think really really impressive has
3:31
the schedule been daunting no but I mean
3:35
I don't mean this disrespectfully at all
3:37
it's Indiana you know I mean what is
3:40
they haven't won more than eight games
3:41
in 50 years you know so it's you say
3:43
well the schedule hasn't been
3:45
challenging they're building a new
3:47
program here you know and I think what
3:49
they've done is is remarkable up to this
3:51
point and you know and Kurt said he
3:53
thinks they have staying power nothing
3:54
that they've shown on the field would
3:56
indicate otherwise what does it what do
3:59
it mean you personally to bring Lee
4:01
borso back here to Indiana a place that
4:03
means so much to him means means a lot
4:05
to the people here at Indiana I love
4:07
love love the old stories and the way
4:09
we're going to open the show tomorrow I
4:10
think is going to be special and I think
4:13
people are going to I'm not going to
4:14
give it away but I think people will
4:16
enjoy it both people who come to the
4:18
show and people are watching on TV I
4:21
went back and I I've read it you know
4:23
dozens of times before but I went back
4:25
and read uh the old article from Sports
4:27
Illustrated Sports Illustrated invol in
4:29
some of the things that Lee's approach
4:31
to trying to build a winner when he came
4:34
here and that just sort of um his uh his
4:38
ability to entertain while still being a
4:41
competitive a hard-nosed competitor as
4:43
he was as a coach and uh the old stories
4:47
about different things that happened in
4:48
the game some of them that have become
4:50
legend that you know might have a hint
4:52
of fiction in the middle but you know as
4:54
he once said you know don't don't let
4:56
the truth get in the way of a really
4:57
good story so it you know there's so
4:59
many great ones and I think because of
5:01
what he's meant to the
5:03
show he's the one who back in the day
5:07
really embraced and personified the idea
5:11
that he always reminds us of even to
5:13
this day it's entertainment sweetheart
5:16
football's our vehicle you know and he
5:19
always says that he embraced that early
5:21
on and because of that he's one of the
5:24
most if not the most important figure in
5:28
college football television history
5:30
because he changed the way pregame shows
5:34
were broadcast it wasn't just well we're
5:36
going to see if we can block the three
5:37
technique all that's great it's
5:38
important but it wasn't just that and he
5:42
was he he was a guy who was among the
5:45
first guys to say exactly what he
5:47
thought and not worry about it forget
5:49
about it you know the whole thing and
5:52
and it really changed the way I think
5:54
people approached the way they covered
5:55
college football and it was it's been
5:58
great it's wonderful to bring back you
6:00
see how excited people are to have him
6:01
back through all your time working with
6:03
him what's your favorite Le horo story
6:05
okay all right this this is easy like
6:08
we're at Penn State one year and you
6:10
know I always like to capture the
6:11
essence in the scen of something that is
6:14
that is recognizable instantly with
6:17
where we are so we're at Penn State and
6:20
as you guys probably know they passed
6:22
the LI to the top of Beaver Stadium so
6:24
we're out on Old Main I said what if we
6:27
pass the LI back through the crowd and I
6:29
I think it was herb Street who said um
6:31
he said what if we got LC to do it it's
6:34
like 2016 maybe I think and so I go to
6:37
him and he goes yeah we're going to do
6:38
it well as as Friday afternoon went on I
6:41
started to get more and more nervous
6:43
about this idea of passing lead back
6:45
through this giant crowd and so I talked
6:48
to security a little bit I said well
6:50
we'll keep an eye on him I'm not sure
6:51
this is a good idea not sure we should
6:53
be doing this like Okay so let's see
6:56
what it's like tomorrow morning so
6:57
tomorrow Saturday morning comes we're
6:59
about to do it security starts kind of
7:02
freaking out like we don't know if we
7:03
can get him back to the set in time for
7:05
the show we don't know if they're going
7:06
to put him down we don't know it's going
7:07
to happen call it off we just have the
7:09
lion do it so I'm on his ass okay tell
7:12
our director at the time Rodney Perez
7:13
open me up to LC I'll tell him I said LC
7:17
hey man Security's worried about this
7:19
just forget about surfing the crowd just
7:21
come on up to the set
7:23
and Lee Lee said hell no sweetheart
7:27
we're doing it right there and he did it
7:29
was one of the great opens I mean this
7:31
great crowd of LC line back being passed
7:33
back through the Penn State crowd and it
7:35
was uh it was awesome that's my many
7:38
many many great memories I think that
7:39
was the one I became nervous about the
7:42
logistics of the show and here he was no
7:44
people are going to like this and
7:46
remember it we're doing it and it was it
7:47
was
7:49
great did you guys start to think that
7:51
IND be a team on your radar show uh I
7:56
mean probably after they they won four
7:57
or five games in all honesty I think we
8:00
were kind of peeking ahead and looking
8:02
toward the Michigan game and saying okay
8:05
that might be that might be a place
8:07
where we would consider going to Indiana
8:09
but then as things fell this one seemed
8:11
to make a lot more sense and it's uh you
8:13
know so I would say probably two three
8:15
weeks ago started kind of keeping an eye
8:17
on it and see where the opportunities
8:19
might be we all know that the name on
8:21
the jerseys shouldn't matter but Indiana
8:23
is Indiana like you said do you think
8:26
wait now you're making it sound like I
8:27
really cast dispersions out I didn't
8:29
that do you think that that could hurt
8:31
them toward the end of the season as
8:33
they try to make a run to the college
8:34
football players not really not anymore
8:37
there are there are other opportunities
8:40
there are other openings now obviously
8:44
first of all they can win the Big T U
8:46
which is a tall order for sure I
8:48
understand that but even if they don't
8:51
let's say for instance and I'll probably
8:53
have to answer to Signet for this one
8:54
but let's say for instance they lose to
8:57
Ohio State they don't make the Big 10
9:00
championship game but they play
9:02
competitively I think there's a really
9:04
good chance they would be in that
9:05
remember be top 11 probably you know
9:08
depending on where the other conference
9:10
Champion would be ranked there would be
9:11
a chance they would be in that
9:12
neighborhood if they win the rest of the
9:13
games impressively and have a you know
9:16
just for instance a close loss against
9:18
Ohio State um so I don't I think those
9:22
types of things are going to matter less
9:25
it there there will still be football
9:27
judgment there their schedule outside of
9:32
these games coming up in in November
9:35
will be scrutinized and that's
9:36
appropriate there's nothing wrong with
9:37
that so a lot of it is going to be how
9:39
they how they play and if they play
9:42
competitively I think they've got a shot
9:44
and the best thing about the new system
9:46
they can just win and then they don't
9:48
have to worry about it that's all the
9:50
time we have for re today all right guys
9:52
thank
