Your school uniform really is important. It gives a school a sense of identity, belonging
0:05
It doesn't have to be expensive. It gives a sense of occasion about going to school
0:10
And I know there's an argument that the workplace now is a little bit more relaxed
0:14
But to be honest with you, I think, you know, these are in school. This is where we learn. This is our community. This is where we set standards for the future. And it's just so important
0:23
yeah amy i mean surely it teaches children discipline and more importantly it smooths out
0:30
the edges between the poor kids and the rich kids who can wear their flashy track suits and their
0:35
flashy trainers not at all i actually think that uniforms just create a sense of sameness
0:41
you know you really want children to be educated enjoy their education be in very comfortable
0:47
clothing. And I think that's very restrictive to force them to wear uniforms. I think nowadays in
0:54
modern day working, you don't wear a uniform necessarily. And if you do, it doesn't mean that
1:00
you're proud of working there. Most offices these days, you wear casual clothing. And I think
1:07
business as usual, it has nothing to do with what you're wearing. Not everyone needs to wear a
1:13
uniform. Christine, what about that point that, you know, it's if you're if kids are just able to
1:19
rock up in tracksuits and trainers and whatever they want, the kids whose parents can't afford
1:24
the flashy new trainers are going to be picked on. 100 percent. Look at the pressure it's going
1:31
to put on parents. You know, clothes are expensive. And also you've got to think about, you know
1:36
the sustainability with fashion designs and things now that we've got a throwaway culture
1:40
So at least with the school uniform, it's generic. It can be recycled. I mean, we recycle a lot of our uniform as well
1:46
And you know and even by standard uniform all the supermarkets do it You know why And you can tell whether you bought it from one brand or another to be honest with you not naming anybody in particular but you know so and it not about being saneness it
2:00
about it is like uniformity yes we're together we're in this together we're not competing we're
2:06
not this uniform tends to be practical we can stick it in the washing machine i would hate it
2:10
if my children at school and i was having to worry about what they were going to wear each day at school and the competition that they would face with their peers and amy what about the sense of
2:18
unity that brings that, you know, the sense of belonging, the sense of supporting one another
2:22
that it gives kids? I think that comes from the community that comes from the administrators
2:28
the teachers. It's about the students being valued and heard. It has nothing to do with
2:33
what they're wearing. And in terms of clothing being expensive or flashy, you know, fast fashion
2:38
these days, whether you shop at Primark or elsewhere, is very affordable and students can
2:43
express themselves in what they're wearing and it doesn't have to be expensive. I've seen fabulous
2:48
clothing and outfits that young people wear that are not expensive. And I think it just allows them to express themselves
2:55
And that's what they're going to do later on in life anyway. And in terms of sense of community, that will definitely come from the teachers
3:02
the administrators and what they do to encourage that. It doesn't matter what the students are wearing
3:09
I think, Christine, you're a head teacher. It's all down to you. You should be encouraging that sense of belonging and community in the kids
3:15
not to do with a blazer. i think personality shines up from within you look in somebody's eyes and you see their personality
3:21
you see their differences you see the character it's not done to what you're wearing and i don't
3:25
believe in in the disposable fashion it's not good for the planet it's not good for us and you know
3:30
if we're all in it together and we're being into it will being in uniform being in a school that
3:36
brings out your character whether it's your administrators or whoever you're all an individual
3:40
you're all unique a uniform's not going to get in a way of developing that character but what it does
3:45
it shows respect for your environment and for each other
