week editor Charles Morgan and today I'd
0:16
like to share with you a really cool
0:17
coin
0:18
this is a 1799 over 8 trait bus dollar
0:22
which is a BB 141 in the bower sport car
0:25
catalog the eight is clearly visible
0:28
under the final nine of the date this is
0:30
one of the three 1799 over 8 over date
0:33
types the other ones are slightly more
0:35
scarce than this one but this one's
0:37
immediately identifiable when you look
0:39
at the reverse I'll tell you a little
0:41
bit more about that later
0:42
but first let's talk about 1799 in the
0:45
dollar coin the mint reported a total
0:48
manage of 423 515 dollar coins struck in
0:52
1799.
0:54
some numismatists including Q David
0:56
Bowers believe that about 10 of those if
0:59
not a little more may have been struck
1:01
using 1798 dated dies
1:04
I said earlier that this coin had a very
1:06
interesting reverse well turning to that
1:08
reverse you can see the very large
1:11
clouds of the right and the left and the
1:13
glory they were enlarged in order to
1:16
cover
1:17
dysinkers mistake
1:19
as you see there's tips of two stars
1:22
that are obfuscated by the large clouds
1:24
when you tabulate the number of stars
1:27
that were then punched into the dye
1:29
initially you'll see that the
1:31
configuration was a nonsensical seven at
1:34
the top six in the middle and two at the
1:37
bottom with one on each side of the
1:38
eagle as was customary
1:41
that totals 15 Stars which was not the
1:44
incentive the designer and so once he
1:47
realized this mistake you decide to
1:48
cover it up instead of Starting Over by
1:50
enlarging the clouds on the left and the
1:52
right
1:54
this is a popular red book variety and
1:57
in this grade this is a pop one coin
2:00
au58 plus there are plenty of mint State
2:04
examples available 17.99 and 17.99 over
2:08
eight dollars
2:09
by our estimation there's going to be at
2:11
least at least 100 probably still
2:13
survive at the two Grading Services some
2:16
crossover in their census report is
2:18
likely
2:20
at the au58 plus level this is a fairly
2:23
expensive coin interestingly this is the
2:25
only over date US coin struck in the
2:27
18th century which in my opinion adds to
2:29
its appeal
2:30
approximately 50 coins have been graded
2:32
finer at both Services which means that
2:35
the potential exists for maybe a hundred
2:36
maybe more examples are surviving in
2:39
mint State and maybe it's fewer with
2:41
some crossovers accounting for the
2:43
inflated number either way the coin is
2:45
not rare in mint State although it is
2:47
scarce in an absolute sense
2:49
this a58 plus example would be a great
2:52
bargain coin it's a very attractive
2:55
example with good color and good
2:57
surfaces and this would be a little bit
2:59
cheaper than it would cost to get maybe
3:01
a mediocre example an ms61 or 62. many
3:05
of these coins are struck with Clash
3:07
thighs and I believe you can see the
3:09
Clash marks of the ribbon that is held
3:11
in the Eagle's beak on the reverse near
3:13
the bottom of the bus truncation there's
3:16
also present evidence of die rust at the
3:18
bottom of the reverse
