Hey, what's up and welcome back. In some of my previous videos I have talked about my experiences
0:04
with the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro from the perspective of a programmer and as someone
0:10
who makes these YouTube videos. Today I wanted to come back around and share my experiences now with
0:16
the 14-inch M1 Pro MacBook that I purchased and how that compares to the 13-inch that I
0:23
own previously. One of the things that I really like is that the newer model definitely has kind
0:28
of that vintage boxy look. It reminds me a lot of my very first MacBook Pro that I got back in 2011
0:35
that was chunkier. Now the thickness of this MacBook Pro is pretty much the same, it's just
0:40
that the previous models had more of a taper closer to the edges and so it felt like it was
0:46
thinner whereas this is more consistent thickness across. I really like that aesthetic. Another
0:52
thing is I really thought it was going to bug me having the little notch in the top where the
0:56
camera is going to be, but as I've been using it I find that it actually doesn't bother me that much
1:00
and maybe that's just because I'm used to that on my phone, but I think that is really kind of
1:05
trivial and non-issue. Especially when the notch actually is positioned inside of the top header
1:13
that has the menu options and things like that, so I just generally don't feel like it gets in the way
1:18
of anything unless I'm going to full screen. Oh, and I do not miss that touch bar at all. It is so
1:24
nice having all keys here. Definitely a huge improvement and I am so glad that they got away
1:30
with that, I just did not really like that feature on the previous versions. And I really like the
1:35
14 inch size. Now I have a 15 inch and I also have a 13 inch and the 15 inch is great, has a lot of
1:43
screen space, but it's heavier and bulkier, a little bit more annoying to carry around, and so I really
1:47
like the form factor of the 13 inch. Just how light it is, be able to put it in a smaller bag and
1:53
take it with me on the go. Well, the 14 inch is nice because you get a bigger screen, but because
1:59
it has the smaller black bezels around the edges of the screen, the overall size of the laptop isn't
2:05
much bigger than my 13 inch, yet the screen is noticeably bigger, gives me a lot more space to
2:11
work on. When programming, I use a single external monitor. It's an ultra wide one, so I've been able
2:17
to get by just fine with the 13 inch M1 MacBook Pro, but I did end up having to get a pretty
2:24
decent hub in order to have more ports to hook in my external SSDs and also to use my SD cards
2:32
for when I'm doing video editing. Having all the extra ports again on the MacBook Pro is just so
2:38
so, so nice and I definitely think that any software engineers who want to do the dual monitors
2:45
will definitely appreciate this newer laptop. I'm also really glad that they brought back the MagSafe
2:50
charging port because there's been a number of times where I've accidentally snagged a USB-C cable
2:56
and it's almost pulled my laptop off my desk and that would be a horrible thing if I broke my
3:01
MacBook, whereas the MagSafe just pops right off. On the 14 inch M1 Pro, I did decide to go with 32
3:08
gigabytes of RAM compared to the 16 that I had on my 13 inch M1 MacBook Pro, and both of them have
3:15
run dead quiet. I hardly hear anything at all. I think there's only been one time on the 13 inch
3:21
that I ever heard any kind of like revving up or whatnot. Both have been dead quiet while I've been
3:25
doing both video editing and web development. Now, there are some areas of software development
3:30
that are going to be much more taxing than web development, and so it is possible that someone
3:36
will max out and notice the difference between these two as a programmer, but if I'm being honest
3:42
here, I have not felt really any difference when it comes to like web development between the two
3:47
It hasn't been anything noticeable for me. I am the type of person who has hundreds of Chrome
3:52
tabs open and I haven't noticed any significant problems, but something that you do need to be
3:57
aware of is that when you are using Apple's migration tool and migrating from an older
4:02
Intel MacBook Pro, it is going to bring over the Intel version of Chrome and that is going to be
4:08
super painfully slow and it's going to be really frustrating. So what you need to do there is you
4:13
need to delete Chrome, go download the M1 version of Chrome, and you'll be back in business and it'll
4:19
be working fine. Since I do make these videos for YouTube, I can say that I've noticed that
4:24
when it comes to video editing and handling the editing timelines, the 14 inch has been better
4:30
and faster at rendering, though the 13 inch is no slouch by any means. However, when it comes to
4:37
doing any kind of photo work in Photoshop or Illustrator or applications like that, I really
4:43
haven't noticed much of a difference. Now, I mostly use those tools for either creating these thumbnails
4:50
for these videos or for just editing some of my photos and also for creating digital assets for
4:56
web development. Now, I'm not any kind of like super user, so we are not talking like hundreds
5:02
of layers here. If you start going down that path, then you might actually see a difference between
5:06
these two. But for the average Joe, I just haven't really noticed much of a difference when it
5:12
comes to photo editing. But let's be honest here, I was getting by just fine with the 13 inch MacBook
5:19
Pro. If I did not own either of these, for sure 100% I would say go for the 14 inch MacBook Pro
5:26
If you already have the 13 inch and are thinking about upgrading, then it really kind of comes down
5:30
to do you want to have more ports in order to be able to do things like have the dual monitors and
5:36
not have to worry about any hubs. Or if you're going to be doing video editing and you want to
5:41
eek out some extra performance there, then it could be a great option. I definitely like the upgrade
5:48
I also think you should check out this video up here. Thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next one. Lates
