hi Dave Taylor here and this time I'm
0:07
going to look at the dell XPS 12 that's
0:10
this and you're thinking dude whoa
0:12
that's a tablet isn't a laptop well the
0:15
dell XPS 12 s actually what they call it
0:17
two and one hybrid so here it is in
0:19
straight tablet mode you see it's a nice
0:22
bright screen and very very fast super
0:26
high resolution and it comes with the
0:29
little holder case that you can use it
0:31
just as a tablet so it's super thin but
0:34
where the XPS 12 gets fun is if we take
0:38
the tablet off of here we'll get rid of
0:41
that one and then it comes with
0:43
keyboards so this is the default
0:45
keyboard this is what they call the
0:47
premier keyboard and you just drop this
0:50
in and now we have a full laptop set up
0:56
so you probably can't see but the mouse
0:58
is working all the keys work and this is
1:01
the premier keyboard this is the default
1:03
and it has it's a standard keyboard so
1:06
it's a one point nine millimeter travel
1:09
so if you're used to regular old keys
1:11
that's pretty much what you're going to
1:13
get with this one it's kind of
1:14
interesting because if you can well look
1:17
a bit close up the way it works is it's
1:19
not actually hinged is as you move it
1:23
you simply move it off the hinge and now
1:26
it just sits connected and it's with a
1:28
magnet so it's not actually going to
1:31
fall apart but you know the thing is is
1:34
that it gives you one viewing angle
1:36
there's not any play for you to change
1:38
the angle so as a trade-off but there's
1:42
a second keyboard so if you don't like
1:44
that one the one that I prefer and a lot
1:47
of people prefer is what they call the
1:49
slim keyboard and let me pop this out as
1:52
we go and this makes the XPS 12 if you
1:56
like Lego this is sort of a lego II sort
1:58
of thing this makes the XPS 12 a little
2:01
more may be competitive with the surface
2:04
pro so now we have it with this is a 1.3
2:08
millimeter travel key and this is a
2:11
really nice keyboard and what's nice
2:13
about this one is it is hinged so now
2:16
I'm holding it and I have my keyboard
2:18
too it's only a very small bit thicker
2:21
than just the regular protective case
2:23
and of course with the way this is
2:25
designed there's a lot of different
2:27
angles you can use so you can get just a
2:30
viewing angle you like yes our laptop
2:32
has fallen out but put it back in is a
2:36
magnetic catch so it makes it really
2:37
easy to work with and either case with
2:41
either keyboard this is a really really
2:42
cool laptop so the screen itself suppose
2:46
I should show it to you the screen
2:48
itself is 12 and a half inches it comes
2:50
in two different versions there's an F
2:53
HD version and that runs at 1920 x 1080
2:56
and this is the 4k screen so this is
2:59
what they call the 4k ultra sharp and it
3:02
runs at 3840 x 2160 now realistically is
3:07
that a huge difference might depend on
3:09
what you're doing but I will say when
3:10
you have a higher resolution screen
3:12
everything's crisper so even if you're
3:14
just working on text even if you're just
3:17
working in a word document or something
3:20
then just all the text is just a little
3:23
bit crisper so it's a little bit better
3:24
on your eyes and stuff the unit comes
3:27
with eight gig of ram and either 128 gig
3:31
or 256 gig SSD drive so actually plenty
3:36
of storage here's the thing is it is a
3:39
USB USB see and what they've done that's
3:44
really cool on the side here there are
3:46
two USBC port so let me give you a close
3:50
up as we go but I really like that
3:52
because a lot of these devices now have
3:54
one us bc and then you're kind of stuck
3:57
if you want to use it for peripherals
3:59
and you want to charge so what Dell's
4:02
done here is that both of them are
4:04
actually running what they call
4:05
thunderbolt three and that means that if
4:08
you want to just use it for charging
4:10
your cool but there's all sorts of
4:12
peripherals including this guy this is
4:14
the dell adapter and this is 79 bucks or
4:18
it comes included depending on your
4:19
configuration and you plug this into one
4:22
of the USB CS and you get USB 3 you
4:26
get Ethernet you get vga vga how old is
4:31
vga now and you get hdmi so super handy
4:35
little gadget to have in your bag the
4:38
other cool thing that comes with the XPS
4:40
12 depending on your configuration is
4:42
the dell active pen and you know it's a
4:47
pen and you can use it for drawing or
4:50
taking notes or doing things I'm not a
4:53
huge fan of using this I have to say I
4:55
haven't yet found a really compelling
4:57
case because I type so fast at this
4:59
point but certainly for a lot of people
5:01
with sketching and stuff this can be
5:03
really terrific and because there's all
5:06
these magnets going on a lot of times
5:08
there are ways you can store it not so
5:12
much with this one maybe but with the
5:14
other keyboard there's ways you can
5:16
actually have this just sitting on the
5:17
keyboard because of a magnet so you
5:20
don't need to have this you can opt to
5:22
get it or not but let's see so the
5:25
screen we've talked about we've talked
5:27
about ram and storage the premiere
5:31
keyboard which is included is this one
5:33
and it's very nice keyboard lights up
5:37
when you plug in the tablet and I'll
5:39
give you a close up there in the middle
5:41
is the magnetic connector and works
5:45
really well not perfectly there are
5:47
times I have to sort of monkey with it a
5:49
little bit to get it to work not really
5:52
a huge problem it also comes slightly
5:54
off the table surface which is nice so
5:57
you can actually have a good angle on
6:00
the keys themselves or or you can use
6:04
the slim keyboard which is this guy and
6:06
what I like about this is it gives you a
6:08
lot of different viewing angles which
6:10
can be very helpful and let's see what I
6:12
was going to tell you about this
6:13
8-megapixel rear-facing camera 5
6:16
megapixel forward facing camera has two
6:20
of the Thunderbolt 3 ports and by the
6:22
way Thunderbolt 3 this is pretty rockin
6:24
stuff this is eight times faster than
6:26
USB 3 0 so whatever you're doing if
6:30
you're pushing a 4k monitor if you're
6:32
trying to do a backup or something using
6:35
those Thunderbolt ports for thunderbolt
6:37
peripherals pretty sweet
6:40
also comes with an SD card reader which
6:42
I don't often see on tablets and such so
6:44
I really like that particular if you're
6:46
a digital photographer popping it out of
6:48
your camera putting it into their very
6:50
nice the whole unit starts at about one
6:53
point seven pounds this is actually it's
6:55
slightly heavier because I have the
6:57
keyboard but it's really eminently light
7:00
this is very very portable comes with
7:02
Windows 10 Home Edition and you can get
7:06
office 365 for two bucks a month if you
7:08
need to add that to it pretty easy I
7:10
don't know if it's the same price after
7:11
the fact but certainly when you're
7:13
configuring your unit that's how much it
7:15
runs active pen 49 bucks the adapter 79
7:21
bucks and here's the thing is if you
7:23
want just the base unit it's 999 and
7:25
then you can add all these devices what
7:27
I have here is I have a little bit of an
7:31
upgrade here so what I have is 1169 and
7:36
that comes with the 4k display comes
7:38
with the 256 gig of SSD comes with the
7:42
adapter comes with the pen so it's very
7:45
nice for 50 extra bucks I actually you
7:48
know went ahead and got the slim
7:49
keyboard too and this is really a honey
7:52
of a laptop so I can run it just as a
7:55
regular windows 10 laptop with touch
7:57
screen and everything and then whenever
7:58
I need to I just pop it right out and
8:01
this thing is ready to roll as a tablet
8:04
so really cool really nice and I have to
8:08
say that I think that dell has done an
8:10
exceptional job with this device it's
8:12
it's really hitting a lot of different
8:14
notes really well and when I use this
8:17
out people always come overnight what is
8:20
that that is so cool so that's kind of
8:22
nice too anyway this is dave taylor this
8:25
is the dell XPS 12 and i'll catch you in
8:28
my next video
8:31
