hi this is dave taylor and today we're
0:09
going to be putting a skin
0:10
on the back of my new ipad also known as
0:13
the ipad 3.
0:15
so we got a skin from a company called
0:17
skin it
0:18
and they have lots and lots of really
0:21
cool graphic designs i'll
0:22
flip this over this is the reveal here's
0:25
the design i had that i picked that i
0:27
really like
0:28
and you can see it's attractive
0:30
unfortunately they come rolled
0:32
so the first thing you have to do is you
0:33
actually have to flatten it
0:35
so i think we're reasonably flat second
0:38
thing or perhaps the first thing you
0:40
really need is an ipad
0:42
and this is an ipad 3 aka the new ipad
0:46
and ready to roll um but we're actually
0:48
obviously going to be putting this on
0:50
the back
0:50
so we're going to move this out of the
0:52
way a little bit and
0:54
i'm going to put a little cloth down
0:55
just because i'm a little paranoid about
0:57
scratches
0:58
hence the putting this on in the first
1:00
place and
1:01
the first thing we're going to need to
1:02
do is we're going to need to clean the
1:04
back of our device
1:05
and to do this i'm actually going to use
1:07
a little spray bottle
1:09
of omnicleans now if you actually go and
1:12
you search for this you'll find well
1:14
it's kind of a screen cleaner
1:16
but it'll still get all the grease and
1:18
oils off so i'll just do one spray
1:21
and then i'll take my little cloth and
1:24
clean it
1:25
and the key is for it to be dry when
1:26
you're done of course
1:28
and since my ipad is only what
1:31
two days old three days old something
1:33
like that it should still be in pretty
1:35
good shape
1:36
one hopes it doesn't get damaged that
1:38
quickly
1:39
but really the important thing is to
1:41
make sure it's dry
1:42
so that was good we're probably going to
1:45
want to take the cover off
1:47
so we'll take the cover off lucky the
1:49
ipad 2 covers work with the ipad 3 so
1:52
that's good we'll put that aside and
1:55
let's see we just want to make sure that
1:56
corners clean
1:58
so there we go the back is clean that's
2:01
step one
2:06
now step two is we're going to bring
2:08
this back into the picture
2:10
and if you look really closely you can
2:12
see there's all sorts of cutouts on the
2:14
edge
2:14
i'll show you here you can see that
2:17
there's little cutouts so it's a pretty
2:20
complicated
2:21
cut that they have here it's not just a
2:23
straight square piece
2:24
and the thing you can use to orient
2:26
yourself is i'll pull this piece off
2:29
that goes there so we'll put that there
2:32
and we're going to actually have to pull
2:34
the entire sheet off
2:36
center it and then place it on the ipad
2:38
and then we'll just go back and forth
2:40
and get the
2:41
air bubbles out now like most of these
2:44
companies skin it includes
2:46
a back and a frame for the front and
2:49
i'll tell you candidly
2:50
i don't put the front frames on because
2:52
i like the black
2:53
because it's very not distracting let me
2:55
rephrase that it doesn't distract me
2:57
that way
2:58
so the front part we're actually never
3:00
going to use we're just going to leave
3:01
it on this big sticker sheet
3:03
which is actually a 3m product if you're
3:06
interested
3:07
but the back now we're ready this is all
3:10
clean
3:10
and dry and this is the scary part
3:14
so here we go you ready so
3:18
i'm going to peel off the sticker
3:22
please come off straight and square
3:26
and there we go luckily i've already
3:28
pulled off you can see
3:29
the hole for the camera and you see that
3:32
that's already pulled off so that's
3:34
handy
3:34
so now the trick obviously is to get it
3:38
all to line up right
3:39
and in my experience it's good to orient
3:43
off the camera
3:45
and then let's see it looks like we're
3:47
not quite right there
3:49
and then there's the bottom where the
3:51
plug goes so between those two things
3:54
that gives you a nice
3:55
way to orient the whole thing let's see
3:59
hmm
3:59
not quite still and
4:03
that's not too anxiety provoking
4:06
let's see i think we're good there let's
4:11
just
4:11
gently curve it around and see how it's
4:14
fitting
4:14
against all the elements on the ipad
4:16
itself
4:19
and as you can see i'm starting from the
4:21
center and doing
4:22
down rather than just doing along the
4:24
sides directly
4:26
it's a folding process and it looks like
4:29
we got it all lined up
4:30
pretty well it's curious i don't know
4:32
what they expected in the design but
4:35
if you look here they've left space for
4:38
a switch of some sort
4:39
i don't really know what that's about
4:41
because there isn't a switch there
4:42
so maybe that's in the ipad 4. maybe
4:45
they have advanced information we don't
4:48
but i'm just going to go ahead and
4:50
gently push this down
4:53
and then run my finger along it
4:57
make sure it's all affixed properly
5:00
and if you've done it right you'll
5:03
notice that
5:04
the sticker comes right up to the edge
5:07
of the switches and it's right on both
5:09
sides of the speaker and everything
5:11
and it's not quite perfect if you look
5:15
can you see there i'll zoom in on this
5:17
you can see it's not quite centered on
5:19
that but
5:20
i think we're okay as long as we can
5:22
still get to the plug that's all that
5:24
really matters
5:25
and there is a little bit of a process
5:28
where i think the skin
5:29
the glue on it actually has to dry but
5:32
now if you can hear there's
5:36
there are some air bubbles that we have
5:38
to work out
5:41
fortunately no therapists are involved
5:43
in working out this particular problem
5:45
and once we get it all done
5:50
um
5:54
and we should be good
5:58
and as you can see it's not a perfect
6:01
job
6:02
matter of fact you know that top part's
6:05
not so good
6:06
let's let's redo that just a slight bit
6:08
because i want to be able to get to the
6:09
headphone jack so
6:10
let's pull this off and maybe i can just
6:13
do just this corner here
6:19
if you're looking at an angle can you
6:21
see that there's still i don't know if
6:23
you can see that on the camera there's a
6:24
lot of air bubbles still so
6:26
we're still going to have to spend some
6:28
time working on this but
6:29
in general that's the process it is a
6:32
little tedious it is a little
6:33
frustrating
6:34
but once you get it done then it's very
6:36
nice because now of course
6:38
i can put my protective cover on it
6:42
and so the front is protected from
6:45
scratching and everything by this
6:47
and then the back is protected by this
6:48
handy sticker so
6:50
easily done if you have to go do it
6:53
maybe once or twice don't be too
6:54
surprised
6:55
and you can cope i'm sure you can make
6:57
this work
6:58
and that's the process and thanks to
7:01
skinit for this
7:02
very cool sticker definitely is going to
7:04
help keep my ipad 3 looking really good
7:07
and i'm sure you can do the same and you
7:10
can have good results too and this is
7:11
dave taylor from ask dave taylor
7:13
and hopefully we'll get this all worked
7:15
out and you too will have a great skin
7:17
on the back of your ipad
7:19
thanks and see you later
7:35
uh
