In all likelihood, we are already partway into a recession, and some people are starting to question whether it's even worth learning web development
0:06
since lots of the major tech companies are either doing layoffs or slowing down their hiring
0:10
It's an understandable concern, especially when thinking about having to compete against a surge of the recently laid-off experienced software developers
0:19
So should you give up on your dream of becoming a programmer, or maybe just hold off
0:23
Here are my thoughts on how things could play out in the industry, whether you should keep continuing to learn to code
0:28
and some thoughts on how I would approach things as a new software developer. Just remember no one knows exactly what is going to happen, how things are going to play out
0:36
so this is just my opinion. Some people worry that a recession is going to forever hurt to the software industry
0:41
and that it's no longer worth pursuing. This seems a little bit far-fetched to me
0:46
but for some people, they have messaged me that this is a real concern for them
0:50
But the thing is, there has been a super strong demand for skilled software developers for a long time
0:56
And now, with the recession, we may see a social software developers. slow down due to the uncertainty and companies just trying to figure out how they can take
1:03
protective measures to avoid being really hurt by a recession. But come on, these companies are
1:09
going to want to leverage technology and data to be competitive in the future. And that's going
1:14
to continue to grow and things are going to get better eventually Sure the industry is going to change because even before the recession there were a bunch of startups that were just trying to hang on hoping for that next round of funding in order to survive
1:28
And that's going to be harder for them now as we enter more uncertain times
1:32
But even though the industry players might change, there's going to be others that are going to rise up
1:37
and there's going to be new opportunities that come about. I do believe that a recession is probably going to make it harder
1:42
to get your first dev job if you're just starting. out. But fortunately, most recessions only last about a year, and so we're probably already a
1:51
couple months into it, and it took me nine months to learn. And that means that if you're just
1:55
starting out, I just reset your expectations and plan for this. And how can you best use that time
2:01
to best prepare, to develop those skills, to build a solid portfolio, and don't put too much
2:07
pressure on yourself to have to, you know, get a job in the next month or two. I have no idea how long
2:13
this uncertainty phase is going to last. But my guess is that once we get past the uncertainty phase
2:19
the surplus of devs are probably going to get gobbled up really quick by companies. And when that
2:24
happens, if you stuck to your plan and continued learning during the recession, you might actually
2:28
be in a better position to be more competitive, because I imagine that there will be some of those
2:33
devs that were laid off who decide to switch careers And then a lot of the people who are just thinking about becoming a dev right now are going to change their minds out of fear And a bunch of folks currently on the path to becoming a dev are going to just give up And then there going to be a bunch of the people who are trying to get jobs who are just going to get discouraged as they have a harder time getting that first job
2:52
And they decide to go do something else. They're going to doubt themselves rather than cutting themselves slack due to the state of the economy
3:00
And this means that if you're determined to ride through this and to continue to work hard and develop your skills
3:05
you might actually be facing a smaller pool of competition when things start to break out of this recession
3:12
So what would I do if I was just starting out facing this recession
3:16
First, I would accept that it's going to take a little bit longer for me to get from where I am to where I want to go
3:21
I would also do everything that I can to avoid falling into the procrastination camp
3:26
Because you know that it could be, you know, a year before we come out of the recession
3:30
it would be super tempting to be like, okay, well, I'm just not going to get started on it right now
3:34
or just work at a little bit slower pace. Whereas if you work hard and keep that consistent pace from the beginning
3:41
you're going to be positioned really well. And I'd really take time to polish my personal portfolio
3:48
and make refinements and continue to grow and expand the projects that are in them
3:54
to be more complex to show more commercial value I also heavily focus on networking and making connections because that something that takes a long time to develop solid relationships with other people
4:07
And now knowing that there's going to be some time that I'd be going to the local meetups each month
4:13
that just start making friends. I'd also spend more time building stuff and less time watching YouTube videos
4:19
Going into a recession, I'd try to be wise with my finances. I'd use my old Windows laptop
4:25
if I had to, whatever I had, rather than going into debt for really expensive
4:30
latest and greatest MacBook Pro. And I wouldn't take on massive debt to attend an overpriced boot camp
4:36
I might try to find a really affordable one or look for whatever free or cheap resources I could
4:41
and go down the self-taught route. In fact, that's actually what I did after the Great Recession
4:46
I went down the self-taught route. I have another video where I talk more about like this going to boot camps versus the self-taught route
4:53
and I'll just drop that link in the description below. Probably one of the most important things that you could do is don't let other people's fears of the recession destroy your dreams
5:01
Because beyond every storm is the next beautiful sunrise. Rather than going forward in fear, you should go forward in faith because God wants you to succeed
5:10
You so got this and we're totally in this together. And if you want to save some money, you should watch this video
5:15
I'm going to share some free good resources for learning to code
5:19
And I'll see you in the next one. Lates
