An LAPD alert tonight though for anyone
0:03
with an apartment building and anyone
0:05
looking to rent. CBS LA's Lauren Posen
0:07
is live in Hollywood tonight to explain
0:09
a rental scam that's now under
0:12
investigation. Lauren?
0:15
Well, Pat, listen to this. The landlords
0:17
we spoke with told us they thought these
0:19
cashier checks were legit, but they
0:21
weren't. And LAPD is saying that these
0:24
scammers are targeting multiple
0:26
neighborhoods with a crew of two people.
0:30
They're criminals with no conscience.
0:33
They have a tremendous sense of
0:35
entitlement and uh and they know that
0:38
they can play the system and they do.
0:39
Michael Renco thought he was renting his
0:41
Hollywood property to legit tenants and
0:43
even hired a screening company.
0:45
They showed up with a cashier's check.
0:47
My inexperiences, I gave them the keys
0:49
thinking cashiier checks like gold. They
0:51
don't c they don't bounce. They bounce
0:54
when they're fraudulent.
0:55
He's not alone. Landlord Jason Catz got
0:58
scammed, too.
0:59
And I get an email from the bank um with
1:01
the with the payment returned that I'm
1:02
like, "This can't be. This is a cashier
1:04
check." They never get returned.
1:05
LAPD says both men were scammed by these
1:08
two suspects who call themselves Manuel
1:10
and Igor. Police do not know their real
1:13
identities yet. The scam starts,
1:14
detectives say, by renting apartments
1:16
with fake IDs, using their photos, but
1:19
other people's information, and paying
1:21
with counterfeit checks like this one.
1:23
When the the victim finds out that
1:24
they're cash uh counterfeit checks, uh
1:27
somebody had already moved in, but it's
1:28
not the person that originally rented
1:30
the apartment.
1:31
The suspects then sublet the units. Catz
1:34
got the tenant out, but Renco is still
1:36
stuck. His only recourse is to go
1:38
through the courts to get them out.
1:40
California is very tenant friendly, and
1:42
some states like Los Angeles have even
1:44
greater tenant protections. So, if
1:47
tenants want to drag the process out, it
1:50
can sometimes take landlords weeks or
1:53
even months to get a court order.
1:56
Fake IDs, fake cashiers checks, real
1:58
stress, and money out the door for
2:01
landlords whose homes have been taken
2:03
over by scammers.
2:04
What they're saying is, "We know that
2:06
they're frauds. We know that they're
2:08
doing this illegal, but they have
2:11
rights.
2:13
What about my rights? Where's my rights?
2:18
LAPD says so far no arrests yet. If you
2:21
have any information about those two
2:23
suspects we showed you, the Commercial
2:25
Crimes Department would like to hear
2:26
from you. You can go ahead and call LAPD
2:29
if you have the information. Reporting
2:31
live in Hollywood, Lauren Posen, CBSLA.
