just last week you had all those pagers
0:02
the thousands of walkie-talkies that
0:03
were used as explosives on Hezbollah
0:06
members in Lebanon and what is widely
0:08
believed to be a coordinated attack by
0:10
Israel so where does America stand in
0:13
this Tech race with other countries like
0:15
China here to give us his insights we
0:17
have former CIA operative Mike Baker
0:19
back on the show Mike good to have you
0:20
on as always good thank you very much I
0:23
appreciate you so the Biden
0:24
Administration as you know they're
0:26
cracking down on cars made in China
0:28
because of the software uh could
0:30
possibly pose potential National
0:31
Security threats saying hey if foreign
0:34
adversaries have made the software they
0:35
can surveil they can control the cars
0:37
remotely it's I don't know if you saw it
0:39
Mike that movie Leave the World Behind
0:41
where all the Teslas start crashing at
0:43
the same time is something like that
0:45
actually
0:46
possible it is uh you know from a
0:49
technology perspective yes it's it's a
0:51
little bit like it's an expanded version
0:54
of uh taking control of your smart
0:56
appliances and and honestly whether
0:58
that's your heating system or your
1:00
refrigerator whatever it may be so the
1:02
vehicle is is another element in that
1:05
look the biggest problem we face and and
1:07
I know there's a lot of attention on the
1:09
pager and the handheld radio
1:11
walkie-talkie operations that took place
1:12
in Lebanon that was more of a physical
1:14
issue that was physical control of
1:16
devices and they were able to implant
1:18
explosives the bigger issue that the us
1:21
and our allies face is the the Cyber
1:24
attack the large scale Cyber attack and
1:27
for years and years uh the countries
1:30
with the resources and motivation that
1:32
basically is China and Russia and Iran
1:35
uh have been probing and testing and
1:37
mapping out our critical
1:40
infrastructure because in the future if
1:42
there is a global conflict you can count
1:45
on the fact that those Nations or
1:47
whomever is involved will take off the
1:49
shelf A playbook that they've created
1:51
already that shows the weaknesses in our
1:53
critical infrastructure our water
1:55
treatment facilities Transportation fuel
1:57
movement trains uh the electrical grid
2:01
and that's will be that will be part of
2:04
the global conflict they will bring the
2:06
pain directly to the Homeland by
2:07
shutting down systems that's the that's
2:09
the concept and are we ready for that it
2:12
will be a different Battlefield are we
2:13
ready for that I keep thinking about you
2:15
know you and I were talking just last
2:16
week about the pagers the walkie-talkies
2:18
are we ready for this new era of
2:20
technological Warfare and the cyber
2:22
attacks that that you're warning about
2:25
well the problem is that if you just
2:27
take our power grid right and imagine if
2:29
the power goes down for for weeks weeks
2:32
months at a time right what's not moving
2:35
well Pharmaceuticals aren't moving
2:36
food's not moving fuel's not moving uh
2:38
you don't have water you don't have
2:40
power obviously can't get cash out there
2:42
are a myriad of problems that we're
2:44
looking at the problem is if you just
2:45
look at the power grid it was never
2:47
built to withstand a terrorist attack
2:50
much less a Cyber attack and so our
2:53
eastn West and Texas grids are
2:56
unfortunately very unprepared for
2:58
something like this I was just I was
2:59
going to say I lived through when the
3:00
Texas grid went down uh in the the
3:03
winter of what was that 2021 uh and it
3:06
not that it was a Cyber attack but it
3:07
was awful um to all the points that that
3:10
you just made what new protections do
3:11
you want to see put in place um by
3:14
Congress the government to fortify us
3:16
here well look they they they're aware
3:19
of the issue uh but unfortunately much
3:21
like other issues up on Capitol Hill
3:23
things move extremely slowly so yes
3:25
they've been aware of it but you know
3:28
the our our our defense imposture needs
3:30
to be much more robust look we do we do
3:33
the same thing do we map out on the
3:34
offensive side do we map out and and
3:37
understand what the the weaknesses are
3:39
uh well of course we do and we better
3:41
hope that we do and we better hope that
3:42
we're the best at it but on the
3:44
defensive side I think Congress needs to
3:47
be much more proactive and and
3:50
understand where we are with this
3:52
because you know again whether it's
3:53
water treatment whether it's power
3:55
whether it's it's our transportation
3:57
systems that may be susceptible uh the
3:59
movement of train traffic around the
4:00
country uh we are still behind the curve
4:04
yeah we need to identify what our
4:05
vulnerabilities are here uh Mike Baker
4:08
always good to have you thank you for
4:09
joining me and I'd be remiss not to say
4:11
my dad listens to your podcast uh the
4:13
