Latest research shows a cyber crime
0:02
report is made every six minutes in
0:04
Australia. In the latest few months, a
0:07
number of major companies in Australia
0:09
have been the victim of cyber attacks,
0:11
including Janaa IVF, Quantis, Louis
0:13
Vuitton, and the United Australia Party.
0:16
And in April last year, nearly 13
0:18
million Australians had their personal
0:20
and private health information stolen in
0:22
the Medi Seccure data breach. Well, Adam
0:26
Mare is a former FBI special agent
0:28
turned chief information security
0:30
officer with Arctic Wolf and he joins us
0:32
this afternoon. Adam, thanks so much for
0:34
your time. It seems there is a major
0:37
cyber attack every week at the moment.
0:40
Why are they increasing?
0:43
Well, thank you for having me on. It's
0:44
my pleasure to be here. Uh the short
0:47
answer is profit. There's so much money
0:49
to be made in cyber crime and so these
0:51
criminals are targeting organizations
0:53
across all sectors including healthcare,
0:55
fashion, airlines and more as you
0:57
mentioned and they use uh various
0:59
tactics like ransomware and other things
1:01
to steal information and make profit off
1:03
it. So that's why they're doing it.
1:05
So we hand over our private information
1:07
as we know very confidential health
1:09
information to these companies. What
1:12
duty of care or legal requirements do
1:14
they have to keep that data safe?
1:17
So around the world uh different
1:19
governments have different rules for
1:21
them to protect this information. We
1:23
certainly have those here in Australia
1:25
as well. So they do have a duty of care
1:27
and which is why I think we're seeing
1:28
more reports of these because part of
1:30
that duty of care is if they get
1:32
breached they have to report it and
1:34
that's another reason why it seems like
1:35
these are on the rise. Gone are the days
1:37
where they can hide breaches. They now
1:39
need to report those to make sure that
1:41
everyone knows and they can take
1:42
measures themselves to try to protect
1:43
themselves when their data has been
1:45
exposed. So, in regards to having our
1:47
data exposed, Adam, how can the hackers
1:49
use this? Is it just because they can
1:51
sell that information online? Are we
1:53
likely to then have our private
1:55
information or bank accounts hacked?
1:57
What's the basis behind them stealing
1:58
our data?
2:00
Yeah, you nailed it on both of those
2:02
things. So, they can use it for identity
2:03
theft. They can use it for financial
2:05
fraud. Uh they can invade your privacy.
2:08
uh if it's login credentials, so
2:11
username and password, they will try
2:13
that against every single account that's
2:15
out there because if you reuse the
2:16
password, they'll try to find an account
2:18
that used that password and get on
2:20
there. So when your information has been
2:22
exposed, it really is on you to
2:24
understand what information was exposed
2:26
and if there are things like usernames
2:28
and passwords to make sure that you look
2:30
at those accounts and go change your
2:32
passwords. Turn on multifactor
2:34
authentication and do other basic cyber
2:36
hygiene to protect yourself. You may
2:38
also want to put monitoring on your
2:40
accounts to make sure that if someone
2:41
tries to, you know, take out a loan or
2:43
something in your name, you get alerted
2:45
to that so people can't do those kinds
2:46
of things with the information that they
2:48
have on you. really important advice and
2:50
we appreciate you joining us today.
2:51
Adam, thanks so much.
2:53
Thank you very much.
