The FBI says it is closely monitoring a
0:02
potential cyber attack to the Southshore
0:04
Regional Emergency Communications
0:05
Center. It happened over the weekend.
0:06
The center says there were no
0:08
disruptions to the 911 system to
0:10
Hangingham, Cohasset, Norwell, and Hull.
0:12
Those are the four towns it serves. NBC
0:14
10's law enforcement reporter Robert
0:16
Goulston broke this story over the
0:17
weekend and is on it for us tonight.
0:22
JC and Glenn, yes, the regional center
0:23
here in Hingham actually serves those
0:25
four different towns. They're
0:26
responsible for taking the emergency
0:28
calls in and then dispatching emergency
0:31
resources out to those towns. Well, over
0:34
the weekend, they were hit by a cyber
0:36
attack, but were still able to function.
0:39
First responders in Cohasset, Hingham,
0:41
Norwell, and Hull did not see any delays
0:44
or miss 911 calls after the Southshore
0:46
Regional Emergency Communications Center
0:49
says it was the victim of a cyber attack
0:51
by a group with ties to Russia.
0:53
Our response time didn't change. There's
0:54
no effect on the police services. Uh we
0:56
were able to go to the the calls we get
0:58
and respond and take care of u business.
1:00
Coassa police also reported they too
1:02
were able to respond to calls and take
1:04
reports offline. The FBI says it is
1:07
aware of the cyber incident and is in
1:09
close contact with local officials. When
1:11
a 911 call comes into this region of the
1:13
Southshore, all the calls are directed
1:15
to a dispatcher on the second floor of
1:17
Hangingham Town Hall. The dispatcher
1:19
then assigns resources to the town where
1:21
the emergency happened. The center
1:23
serves Hangingham, Hull, Cohassid, and
1:25
Norwell. The regional communication
1:27
center reported the issue started
1:29
Saturday morning. The police department
1:31
say they were still able to take calls
1:33
through other methods, including radio
1:35
channels.
1:36
There is no thing as 100% protection.
1:38
Steve Zaramsky is a cyber security
1:40
expert at Bridgewwater State University.
1:42
He says motivation for these crimes can
1:45
be widespread.
1:46
They could be financially motivated. Um,
1:48
they could be looking to steal sensitive
1:50
information. Zorsky says it is critical
1:53
for the investigation to focus on how
1:55
the compromise happened
1:56
to mitigate any potential future harm or
1:59
damage to the organization and then
2:01
relying on the information technology
2:03
teams uh to start to do their own
2:05
internal investigation
2:08
and the cent's director telling us they
2:10
are aggressively working to find out if
2:12
any personal information has been
2:14
compromised. We're live tonight in
2:16
Hingham. Law enforcement reporter Robert
