In this video I'm going to show you exactly how to make these little dorset buttons that are bouquets of flowers

So all you need is a hoop of some kind. So you can see I've used a curtain ring so that I can hang it

but you can just use an ordinary plastic or wooden ring like I'm using here

Now you want some green embroidery thread to go round the edge and to do the background of your bouquet

the stems and the leaves and some colours for your flowers. So to start with you're going to thread up a needle with a great big long length of the green

so that we can do what's called casting which is cover that loop

So just lie your embroidery thread along the hoop and then take your needle through the loop and the hoop

It's very confusing. So let's say that again. You're going to go through the hoop

but make sure you go through your loop of embroidery thread. And that's going to form a blanket stitch

Now I have a video all about blanket stitch. So again, that'll be linked below if you want to go and have a look

So you'll see it's starting to cover the ring. And we're also working over that edge, that end that we left

So the tail of embroidery thread is getting trapped in there nice and secure

So you can see when you start and you have a great big long length of thread. It takes a little bit of pulling through but it gets easier

So through the hoop, through the loop of embroidery thread and pull it tight

And you're just going to keep going doing that all the way around that hoop

And then it'd be nice and secure and nice and covered. And then you'll be ready to start on your bouquet

So once you've got there, you're going to form the background. Now I'm just going to show you, you're sort of going to go across, but don't go directly

across because you need to start forming that angle. So I just showing you with a few strands but for me that not enough strands Now you can do as many of these spokes or strands as you like

but I think really six or eight is probably the minimum so that you can get some detail

So you need to make sure when you set off, you've left space for that

And then you just want to try and get them all about the same distance apart from each other

And obviously at the bottom, they're all going through the same point

So you get that shape of a bouquet that you're looking for

And mess about until you're happy. Only once you're happy with it, proceed to try and secure it

So bring your needle through the hoop and just go round all of those spokes and pull it tight

And repeat. So you're coming round all of those spokes. Now how many times you wrap it down is up

wrap it round is up to you because the more times you do it, the further up you'll become and the longer that stem will be at the bottom of your bouquet

So the one that you can see on the screen that I've already done has quite a long bit there

This one, I'm just going to do a few. And then you start to form the background of the bouquet

So you're going to wrap your thread round the end, spoke. Oh, I've come unthreaded

You've wrapped it round that end spoke and then you're going to need to bring your needle up

not in the next one but in the next one along. So you've gone along two spokes and then you're

coming back one. So along two and then back one. You can see I've got a short thread now

so it starts to get a little bit awkward. So along two and back one

And that's the basic format for a dorset button. Now there's lots I can talk about here about joining your thread on with a little

knot at the back and just making sure everything stays secure. But basically you're just going to keep working all the way up

So you'll just get into a nice little routine where you go all one way

I'm just going to run my needle down the back of a spoke just so that that thread is all the way to the bottom

Now I've just checked on the front to make sure it's not going to show but to be honest I'm going to put the flowers on so it probably wouldn't anyway

So there we go it's all ready for our bright coloured flowers. So you've picked whatever colour you like

thread up your needle and then I recommend just putting a little knot on the end of the thread

just to stop it pulling through and then push your needle through from the back to the front

wherever you want to put your first flower it can be between the spokes or on the spokes

it's up to you and we're going to use French knots so all you do is take your yarn

and wrap it round your needle now I recommend doing three or four or four

So the first time I'm just going to do three little loops and then push the needle back down through the bouquet in about the same place as it came up, very, very close

And then pull the whole thread through and you'll form a little knot at the front, a little French knot

Now you can see that's a tiny one. So I will do another one and I put four loops on So this time I going to come up through one of the spokes So it be a little bit further forward this flower

And I'm going to go one, two, three, four. So it should be a slightly bigger knot

Also it depends how tight you pull your embroidery thread or how loose you leave it

And there's a little bit of a balancing act there. So I always say try and get it as tight as you can

so that the eye of the needle still goes through easily. Much more and you can end up with big loops, too tight and you can have trouble

and you just end up with the tiniest knot ever anyway. So you can see that one showing up more

So I'll probably do most of mine with four loops to get the larger flowers

but I will interspers with some smaller ones. So just wrap it round back through close to where it came out

and you can start to create. So you could have as many different colours as you like

and you can spread them as much or as little as you like

You can have a few flowers, you can completely fill it like I've done. Your project, you can get creative

But you can see there how it's coming together and hopefully we'll look like that one shortly

So once you're happy you've got enough flowers and I'm happy with that one

you're done if you want to, but I like to just finish it off with a little ribbon around the bouquet

Now I'm actually using embroidery thread. You could use a little ribbon if you've got one and just tie a little tiny bow

Now I'm not going to lie, it's a little bit fiddly, but I do think it's worth it

So I'd say keep your embroidery thread quite long so that you can actually tie this bow

Pull it until you're happy with it and then trim off the ends so it sits nicely inside your hoop

And then you should have a beautiful bouquet. You can attach it to a parcel, you can hang them up or just gift it as it is, perhaps a brooch
