There are lots of techniques for stunning frosting and decorations on cakes
0:04
but with cake toppers you can really take your cakes to the next level. Here are 10 easy cake toppers you can use for your cakes
0:15
Make colorful or glittery cherries by dipping cherries into melted chocolate and then pressing into a bowl of sprinkles
0:23
These tiny non-parrelles, or hundreds and thousands, are perfect for this because they'll give you full coverage over the chocolate
0:29
and not much texture when you bite into them. For glitter, glassade or candied cherries are ideal because they're sticky
0:38
so you can just dip them into a jar of luster dust or edible glitter
0:42
and it will cover them completely, making them colourful and also shimmery or metallic
0:47
These look so pretty and show-stopping when they're nestled into piping on a cake
0:53
Make custom cake-toppers with chocolate, melting it in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time, using 80% power
0:59
so it doesn't burn or seize. Stir until it's smooth and then spoon the chocolate into a sandwich bag
1:06
Cut a tiny piece off one of the bottom corners of the bag and then draw a design or write a message
1:11
onto a piece of baking paper, parchment paper or wax paper. Make the lines as thick as you can
1:18
while still being legible so that they're strong and less likely to snap
1:22
than if they're thin. Push a toothpick into the bottom of each section
1:26
and cover it up with some more chocolate. The chocolate lines don need to be neat or smooth because next cover them up by pouring sprinkles or coloured sugar over the top pressing down gently to attach them to the melted chocolate Do this on a cakeboard or a small tray or cutting board so that you can lift it up
1:43
and put it into the freezer so the chocolate sets. And it will be the strongest when it's cold, so then when you pick up the toothpicks
1:50
to lift up the chocolate, it won't break. Push the chocolate into the cake and this is what the toothpicks are for
1:56
to secure the chocolate so that it stands up straight. such an easy way to make fun, colourful cake toppers
2:03
Create cake toppers using ingredients that match your cake flavour, for example, fresh berries to match the filling and frosting on this cake
2:11
If the frosting on the cake has already set, so it's not sticky anymore
2:16
you'll need to spread some fresh frosting wherever you want to place the toppers, to act as glue to attach them
2:21
If the frosting hasn't set yet, you can press the toppers straight into it
2:25
like the cookie dough balls on this cake, which has layers of cookie dough sandwiched between the cake layers
2:31
When the frosting is still soft, notice that the weight of the cake topper can make the frosting bulge
2:37
so chilling the cake before adding toppers is best, I think. Use fresh flowers as cake toppers by cutting the stems an inch or two below the flowers
2:47
and wrapping small groups of flowers with cling film or saran wrap to cover the stems
2:52
so that no liquids seep out through the stems and into your cake
2:56
Push the wrapped stems into a straw and cut the straw so it's just longer than the stems
3:02
Then push these into your cake using scissors blades to push them in that last little bit Or you can push just the straws in first and then pick the stems into those next Fresh flowers are simple but stunning
3:17
Another option is artificial flowers, which won't wilt, and you don't have to worry about any floral juices
3:23
oozing into your cake, but it's still a good idea to wrap the stems
3:28
to make sure they're clean and food safe before pushing them into the cake
3:32
You can skip the straws if you don't have any, but it's easier to. push the flowers in and to remove them later if you do use straws
3:42
Use macarons or candies as cake to add height and detail to your cakes, and this is a great way
3:49
to match any color scheme. You can make the macarons or buy them from a bakery or even from the
3:54
supermarket or grocery store. If the frosting on the cake has already set, attach
3:59
to the cake by spreading or piping a dot of buttercream, which will act as glue to secure them
4:05
Make your own delicious cake toppers by piping extra cake batter into a silicon donut mould
4:11
and after baking and cooling, dip them into ganache, which is super easy to make with three times
4:17
as much white chocolate as cream, and you can tint this with oil-based colours or buy coloured
4:23
candy melts to use instead of white chocolate. Add any decorations like sprinkles straight away
4:29
while the ganache is still soft and sticky. Push a toothpick or two toothpicks into the donut and then
4:35
push the toothpicks into the cake and that will support it so that it stays upright and in place Use toy figures like cars or cartoon characters or these pretty gold animals which is much less time consuming than making the figures out of buttercream or chocolate or fondant
4:53
And for children's characters, probably more easily recognizable than your own version
5:00
Just like with other toppers, they won't stick to frosting that's already set
5:04
So if a buttercream cake has been in the fridge, you'll need to spread on some fresh buttercream to act as glue
5:10
and press the cake topper into that. Use cookies like Oreos as cake toppers
5:17
by arranging them around the top of a cake, pushing them gently down into the frosting
5:22
or here into the drip on top of the cake. Space them evenly and then pipe swells in between them
5:28
and the cookies will keep the swells the same width and if you keep an eye on the top of the cookies
5:33
you can pipe every swell to be the same height too. Okay, number 10
5:39
You can buy cake choppers for messages, like happy birthday or for a baby shower
5:45
And the message will be more visible than if you pipe it, because it stands upright
5:50
Push it into the cake after transporting, because the vibrations of a car while you're driving
5:54
will wiggle it and make the hole in the cake bigger. Which cake topper are you going to try next
