Today I’m taking you behind the scenes on an ESPN special feature that’s airing during Monday Night Football. We’re at the Indianapolis Colts facility, shooting a two-person interview inside their production studio — and I’m handling all of the production audio.
This was a fast-paced broadcast shoot with a tight turnaround, multiple cameras, timecode, and a full crew moving quickly. I walk through how I set up my tabletop mixer, choose my audio position, scan wireless frequencies, jam timecode, and send clean audio to two ARRI Amira cameras.
I also break down my mixing strategy for this shoot:
Two boom mics (Sanken CSM1 & CS3E)
Two lavs (Sanken COS-11D)
Stereo mix to camera using Dugan AutoMix
ISO tracks for editor flexibility
Tentacle Sync timecode
IEM monitoring for the producer
This job actually came together through a last-minute referral, which is a great example of how freelance audio work often happens — sometimes from people you met years ago, sometimes from someone you met two days ago.
