A reading from the book of Jeremiah. I
0:02
hear the whisperings of many. Terror on
0:05
every side. Denounce. Let us denounce
0:06
him. All those who are my friends are on
0:09
the watch for any misstep of mine.
0:11
Perhaps he will be trapped. Then we can
0:13
prevail and take our vengeance on him.
0:16
But the Lord is with me like a mighty
0:18
champion. My persecutors will stumble.
0:20
They will not triumph. In their failure,
0:22
they will be put to utter shame. To
0:24
lasting unforgettable confusion. Oh Lord
0:28
of hosts, you who test the just, who
0:30
probe mind and heart, let me witness the
0:32
vengeance you take on them. For to you I
0:35
have entrusted my cause. Sing to the
0:38
Lord, praise the Lord, for he has
0:40
rescued the life of the poor from the
0:41
power of the wicked. The word of the
0:44
Lord. Thanks be to God.
0:54
A reading from the Holy Gospel according
0:56
to John. Glory to you, O Lord. The Jews
1:00
picked up rocks to stone Jesus. Jesus
1:02
answered them, "I have shown you many
1:04
good works from my father. For which of
1:06
these are you trying to stone me?" The
1:09
Jews answered him, "We are not stoning
1:11
you for a good work, but for blasphemy.
1:14
You, a man, are making yourself God."
1:16
Jesus answered them, "Is it not written
1:19
in your law I said you are gods? If it
1:22
calls them gods to whom the word of God
1:23
came and scripture cannot be set aside,
1:26
can you say that the one whom the father
1:28
has consecrated and sent into the world
1:31
blasphemes because I said, "I am the son
1:33
of God. If I do not perform my father's
1:36
works, do not [music] believe me. But if
1:38
I perform them, even if you do not
1:40
believe me, believe the works so that
1:43
you may realize and understand that the
1:45
Father is in me and I am in the Father."
1:48
Then they tried again to arrest him, but
1:50
he escaped from their power. He went
1:53
back across the Jordan to the place
1:54
where John first baptized, and there he
1:56
remained. Many came to him and said,
1:59
"John performed no sign, but everything
2:02
John said about this man was true, and
2:04
many there began to believe in him." The
2:07
Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord
2:19
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
2:21
there are moments in life when we feel
2:23
utterly surrounded. Surrounded by
2:25
difficulties, by adversity, by people
2:27
who seem to desire our downfall.
2:30
It's like being at the bottom of a dark
2:32
well where every word that reaches us is
2:35
an echo of condemnation. Every shadow
2:37
seems a threat. In these moments of
2:39
profound loneliness and anguish, today's
2:42
readings reach us with a powerful
2:44
message of resistance, faith, and
2:46
liberation. The prophet Jeremiah opens
2:49
his heart to us in a surprisingly raw
2:51
and honest way. I hear slander from
2:54
many, terror on every side. There is no
2:57
superficial spirituality here. No faith
3:00
masked by a forced smile. Jeremiah is
3:03
experiencing real tangible palpable
3:06
terror. His own friends, those he should
3:08
be able to trust, are lying in weight,
3:10
awaiting his downfall.
3:12
Watch him, they say. Perhaps he will be
3:15
deceived. Then we will overpower him and
3:18
take our revenge on him. What
3:20
devastating betrayal. These are not
3:22
declared enemies, but supposed
3:24
companions who are now conspiring
3:26
against him. This is perhaps the most
3:29
painful form of persecution. Not the
3:32
kind that comes from strangers, but the
3:34
kind that comes from those we know who
3:36
have shared our table, who have stood by
3:38
our side. How many of us have
3:40
experienced something similar? Perhaps
3:43
not a literal conspiracy against our
3:44
lives, but moments when we felt betrayed
3:47
by those we trusted. moments when our
3:49
words were distorted, our intentions
3:52
questioned, our integrity attacked. In
3:55
these moments, it is easy to fall into
3:57
despair, bitterness, the desire to
3:58
abandon everything. But look what
4:00
Jeremiah does. Instead of surrendering
4:03
to despair, he does something
4:06
He takes his pain, his anguish, his fear
4:08
directly to God. But the Lord is with me
4:11
like a mighty warrior. What a powerful
4:13
and comforting image. God is not
4:16
presented here as a distant adviser or a
4:18
passive observer, but as an active
4:20
warrior fighting alongside Jeremiah.
4:23
This is a fundamental truth that we need
4:25
to engrave in our hearts. We are not
4:28
alone in our struggles. The same God who
4:30
was with Jeremiah is with us. He doesn't
4:34
just observe our battles from afar. He
4:36
is on the battlefield with us, fighting
4:38
alongside us, defending our cause.
4:41
Jeremiah continues, "Therefore, my
4:45
persecutors will stumble and not
4:47
prevail." Pay attention to these words.
4:50
Jeremiah is not merely expressing a
4:52
vague hope. He is declaring a certainty
4:55
based on the unchanging character of
4:57
God. Those who plot evil may seem
5:00
powerful at the moment, but their
5:02
downfall is certain. Evil will not have
5:05
the last word. And then in the midst of
5:08
all this turmoil, Jeremiah burst forth
5:10
in praise. Sing to the Lord. Praise the
5:13
Lord. For he has delivered the life of
5:14
the poor from the hands of evildoers.
5:18
This is remarkable. Jeremiah is still in
5:20
the midst of the trial. The conspirators
5:22
are still around him. But he already
5:25
begins to praise God for the
5:26
deliverance. This is the power of
5:29
authentic faith. It is not a faith that
5:32
only praises when everything is going
5:34
well, when circumstances are favorable.
5:37
It is a faith that praises in the midst
5:39
of the storm, that sings in the valley
5:41
of the shadow of death, that declares
5:43
victory even when surrounded by enemies.
5:46
Turning now to the gospel, we find Jesus
5:49
in an equally dangerous situation. The
5:51
Jews pick up stones to stone him. It is
5:54
not a veiled threat. It is an attempted
5:57
murder in full swing. And what is
6:00
Jesus's crime? He made himself equal to
6:02
God. Jesus responds with brilliant
6:05
logic, disarming his accusers with their
6:07
own scriptures. He quotes Psalm 82, I
6:10
said, you are gods. If the scriptures
6:13
can call those to whom the word of God
6:15
was addressed gods, why is it blasphemy
6:18
for Jesus who does the works of the
6:19
father to call himself the son of God?
6:22
But Jesus goes beyond intellectual
6:24
defense. He challenges them. If I do not
6:28
do the works of my father, do not
6:29
believe me. But if I do them, even
6:31
though you do not believe me, believe
6:33
the works themselves. What a powerful
6:36
invitation. Jesus is saying, "Look at
6:39
the fruits. Examine the evidence." Truth
6:43
manifests itself not only in words, but
6:45
in actions. Jesus' works spoke for
6:47
themselves. He healed the sick, raised
6:50
the dead, freed the oppressed, fed the
6:52
hungry, and welcomed the marginalized.
6:55
These were not the works of a
6:56
blasphemer, but the works of God
6:58
manifested in human flesh. Yet, despite
7:01
all this evidence, they sought again to
7:03
arrest him. Resistance to truth is
7:06
sometimes irrational. It is not based on
7:09
a lack of evidence, but on a refusal to
7:11
accept what the evidence reveals. It is
7:14
a self-imposed blindness, a chosen
7:16
deafness. But look what happens. He
7:19
escaped from their hands. Just as
7:21
Jeremiah prophesied that his persecutors
7:23
would not prevail, Jesus demonstrates
7:25
that God's plan cannot be thwarted by
7:27
human opposition. It was not yet Jesus'
7:30
time to be arrested. So no human hand
7:33
could stop him. Jesus then goes again
7:35
across the Jordan to the place where
7:37
John was baptizing in the beginning.
7:39
This detail is significant.
7:42
Jesus returns to the place of his
7:44
initial revelation to the place where
7:46
his mission was publicly inaugurated. It
7:49
is a moment of recalibration, of
7:51
returning to his roots, of renewing his
7:53
purpose. And there, far from the
7:56
hostility of Jerusalem, many believed in
7:58
him. What a contrast. In the religious
8:02
city, the center of Judaism, Jesus
8:04
encounters rejection and violence. But
8:07
in this simple place, on the banks of
8:09
the Jordan, hearts open and faith
8:13
This teaches us something profound about
8:15
how God works. He is not limited to
8:18
traditional religious places. Sometimes
8:20
it is precisely when we distance
8:22
ourselves from the noise and religious
8:24
politics when we return to the essential
8:27
that we find God in a more authentic
8:30
way. My dear brothers and sisters, what
8:33
do these readings tell us today? They
8:35
speak to us of faith in the midst of
8:37
persecution, of praise in the midst of
8:40
tribulation, of liberation in the midst
8:42
of siege. They remind us that we are not
8:45
alone in our struggles, that God is our
8:47
mighty warrior, that God's works speak
8:50
louder than the accusations of men.
8:52
Perhaps you are going through a
8:54
Jeremiahike moment now. Perhaps you feel
8:57
that everyone is against you, that your
8:59
words are distorted, that your motives
9:01
are questioned. Remember, the Lord is
9:03
with you as a mighty warrior. Your
9:05
persecutors will stumble and will not
9:08
prevail. Or perhaps you are in a
9:10
situation like Jesus where despite all
9:12
the good works you do, despite living
9:14
with integrity and love, you still face
9:17
opposition and criticism.
9:20
Remember, works speak for themselves.
9:23
Keep doing good, keep loving, keep
9:26
serving. Truth always prevails, even if
9:29
it is not immediately recognized. And
9:32
for all of us, there is an invitation to
9:33
return to the Jordan River, to the place
9:36
of our initial encounter with Christ, to
9:38
the place where it all began. In a world
9:41
full of noise, conflict, and religious
9:43
confusion, sometimes we need to return
9:46
to the essentials, the simple message of
9:48
the gospel, the unconditional love of
9:50
God, the transforming grace of Christ.
9:53
When Jeremiah was surrounded by enemies,
9:56
he did not merely wait passively for
9:58
deliverance. He began to praise. He
10:01
declared victory before seeing it. This
10:03
is the faith that transforms situations.
10:06
This is the confidence that moves
10:08
mountains. This is the hope that does
10:10
not disappoint. So today, no matter what
10:13
your circumstances, [music] choose to
10:15
praise. Choose to trust that God is a
10:18
powerful warrior fighting by your side.
10:21
Choose to believe that your works of
10:23
love and justice, inspired by the Holy
10:25
Spirit, will speak louder than any
10:27
accusation. And always remember, you can
10:30
escape the hands of those who want to
10:32
stop you because you are in God's hands
10:35
and no one can snatch you from there.
10:37
You can cross the valley of the shadow
10:39
of death and fear no evil because God is
10:41
with you. May we be like Jeremiah
10:44
praising in the midst of the storm. May
10:47
we be like Jesus doing the father's work
10:49
even in the face of opposition. May we
10:52
find our way back to the Jordan to the
10:54
place of authentic encounter with God.
10:57
And may the Lord, our mighty warrior,
10:59
strengthen us, defend us, deliver us,
11:02
and lead us from victory to victory
11:05
until that glorious day when we will see
11:07
face to face him who loved us and gave
11:09
himself for us. Let us sing to the Lord.
11:12
Let us praise the Lord for he has
11:14
delivered the life of the poor from the
11:15
hands of evildoers. For he is faithful,
11:18
for he is powerful, for he is love. May
11:22
the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the
11:24
love of God the Father, and the
11:26
fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with
11:27
you all now and forever. Amen.
11:32
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in
11:35
battle. Be our protection against the
11:37
wickedness and snares of the devil. May
11:40
God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do
11:43
thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by
11:46
the power of God, cast into hell Satan
11:49
and all the evil spirits who prowl
11:52
throughout the world seeking the ruin of
