The Affordable Cobra RAD 500G Radar Detector - REVIEWED
2K views
May 29, 2025
There are lots of radar detectors on the market for $400-$500 or more, but if you just want a reliable device that won't break your budget, it's tricky. The Cobra RAD 500G offers some impressive smarts and features a sophisticated GPS-based tracking system along with lots of anti-false reading filters and a surprising price tag. Tech expert Dave Taylor of https://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ gave the RAD 500G a test run on a road trip to Breckenridge, Colorado and found it was a simple, reliable radar detector. Check it out on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2NGJ0LS or SamsClub: https://www.samsclub.com/sams/cobra-rad500g-radar/prod22180911.ip

a radar detector for less than the price
0:01
of a single speeding ticket let's check
0:03
it out Dave Taylor here and I'm up in
0:13
Breckenridge Colorado of 9600 foot
0:16
elevation not a lot of oxygen up here
0:19
but there are a lot of roads and getting
0:21
here is really interesting a beautiful
0:23
drive and a perfect opportunity to test
0:26
out this this is the Cobra rad 500 g
0:30
radar detector and you know what it's
0:33
pretty nice it's a real entry-level unit
0:36
so it's not 399 or 499 there are a lot
0:40
of really fancy ones but for the price
0:43
this packs a lot of capabilities it's a
0:46
GPS receiver and what that means is that
0:49
it actually has the ability to know
0:51
what's in the area when you're driving
0:54
through so it'll trigger things like
0:56
there's a red light camera or there's a
0:58
speed camera or there's a known speed
1:00
trap coming up all of it will just be
1:02
displayed right on the front and they do
1:05
that by using something called the aura
1:06
database and it's a location-based alert
1:09
system very slick so there are all sorts
1:13
of buttons and settings and options and
1:15
all this stuff you know what to do any
1:16
of them the way I did this was I plug
1:18
this in I use the windshield mount to
1:21
plug it in and then it went straight
1:23
into the 12-volt power adapter aka
1:27
cigarette lighter and then it just sat
1:29
on the dashboard I'm actually facing me
1:32
it's sat on the dashboard
1:34
you know just at the very bottom of the
1:36
windshield and did a great job so here
1:38
for example is what you see when there
1:41
is something that it's sensed but it's
1:43
pretty far away and you know it's far
1:45
away because there's only a single bar
1:47
as well I got closer to cops on the side
1:50
of the road or speed traps then the
1:52
display got a lot more exciting
1:54
generally though it just had a little
1:56
bar that went back and forth which
1:58
reminded me a lot of like
2:00
Cylons in Battlestar Galactica I know
2:03
kind of geeky I own it
2:06
so this is not one that pairs with your
2:08
phone and gives you all the controls
2:10
there so everything's right here on
2:12
board which is nice it's simple
2:14
so there's volume control and I've found
2:16
when I put the volume really low it
2:18
worked just fine
2:20
it would just still flash and I would be
2:21
able to see right there you know right
2:23
on the windshield that something's
2:26
coming up let me drop it down a couple
2:27
of miles per hour so one of the great
2:30
things about a GPS based radar detector
2:32
is you can lock out false alerts but
2:35
really these devices are kind of just as
2:37
much about not alerting you in correctly
2:40
as they are about alerting you for
2:42
active live issues so they have an
2:45
updatable ivt filter to help with false
2:48
alarms
2:49
they have anti falling circuitry there's
2:53
just a lot of stuff that they have that
2:55
helps you ensure that you aren't gonna
2:57
actually have this go off every time you
2:59
go by a supermarket door you don't want
3:02
that and by the way supermarkets with
3:04
their automatic doors some radar
3:06
detectors actually see those as threats
3:08
that's not a threat unless you're
3:10
driving into the supermarket and the
3:12
doors not opening not an issue for me so
3:15
let's see what else going to tell you is
3:16
that it supports detection of instant on
3:19
radar because some cops are getting
3:21
pretty sneaky with their radar systems
3:23
so this supports that and it also can
3:26
recognize laser eye either in front or
3:28
behind you so for that you obviously it
3:31
needs to have a reasonably clear line of
3:33
sight through the back window so
3:35
sometimes I tried using it when it was
3:37
actually in the sort of lower
3:39
stick-shift area and that worked really
3:42
well for generic detection but obviously
3:44
that's not going to help me with the
3:45
laser eye so generally you want to have
3:50
it on your windshield somewhere and I
3:52
think that will help it work better I
3:55
like it it's very simple Cobra I think
3:58
makes really nice radar detectors I'm
4:01
not a huge fan of driving crazy fast but
4:03
you know when I'm on long road trips I
4:05
also don't want to be stuck right at the
4:07
speed limit so having some knowledge
4:09
that over the next hill there's a cop
4:12
sitting
4:13
is a darn beneficial thing now I want to
4:16
hasten to tell you that radar detectors
4:19
are not okay if you're in Virginia or
4:21
Washington DC so if you're gonna use
4:23
this there be super low-key and stealthy
4:26
about it or possibly just unplug it and
4:28
then when you get out of Virginia you
4:30
can plug it back in and keep yourself
4:32
safe so like I said it's pretty darn
4:37
inexpensive the cost of speeding tickets
4:39
can be crazy like two three four five
4:42
hundred dollars you don't want that you
4:44
don't want that at all so something like
4:45
this is a much better investment ahead
4:47
of time and there's no points there's no
4:50
potential jail time there's no having to
4:52
do traffic school which as anyone who
4:55
has done it knows is super tedious and
4:57
not a fun way to spend a day and traffic
5:00
school cost money too so it's not like
5:02
it's a freebie okay so the only thing I
5:05
want to talk about is price still but
5:07
before we get there let me ask if you
5:08
can go ahead and subscribe to my channel
5:10
really appreciate when you subscribe and
5:13
give me some feedback on this video too
5:14
I'm still trying to figure out how to
5:16
breathe up here really 9600 feet I feel
5:20
like I'm like on my way up to Everest
5:22
it's pretty high altitude but it is
5:27
worth it because it's beautiful here
5:29
the Cobra rad 500 g radar detector it
5:33
will cost you a hundred and ninety nine
5:34
eighty five at amazon.com but do your
5:38
online shopping wisely I found it at
5:40
Sam's Club for a hundred and forty nine
5:43
ninety eight that's fifty dollars
5:45
cheaper that's a pretty good deal one
5:47
hundred and fifty bucks for this all
5:48
ready to go with all of these features
5:50
that's a no-brainer for anyone who's
5:53
doing road trips or anyone who just has
5:55
a heavy foot on their gas pedal so I say
5:57
check it out and I will catch you in my
6:00
next video
