A great gamer headset at a surprisingly affordable price
0:03
Let's have a look. Oh, okay. Oh, hey, Dave Taylor here
0:15
and I'm looking at these or listening to these actually. These are the HyperX Cloud Stinger Core 7.1 gamer headset
0:23
and they're really nice. Now, let's start with audio. They feature a 40 millimeter neodymium driver
0:30
which gives you enhanced bass. I mean, there's a lot of bass in this. We'll come back to that
0:34
20 to 20,000 Hertz of audio response, 16 ohm impedance, which is surprisingly low
0:40
and less than 2% total harmonic distortion. So are these good music headphones
0:45
Not so much. They're not really designed for that, but again, we'll come back to that
0:49
They're really lightweight, seven and a half ounces or 215 grams, if you prefer that number
0:55
and they feature immersive virtual 7.1 audio. And what that means is that they've figured out a way
1:02
to give you that spatial awareness that's so critical in modern gaming
1:07
So if someone's creeping up behind you and they reload their gun, you'll hear it
1:12
but you won't just hear it. You'll hear it behind you. So you'll know in the game that you can turn around
1:17
and they put a lot of effort into trying to figure out how to make it consistent facing the unit you're looking at
1:25
so that if you turn your head, the spatial thing should still be oriented correctly
1:30
It does a really remarkable job with that. Now, it's adjustable with steel sliders
1:36
and there's the, one of my favorite features is it has the microphone, which is on
1:42
and if you want to mute it, you just turn it up. So super easy
1:46
In fact, and I'm listening to some Pokemon music when I do that
1:50
In fact, there are remarkably few controls. This is a really simple, straightforward gamer headset
1:55
The only control on the unit is a volume knob, and it's super easy to just orient your thumb
2:02
and you can turn the volume up or down just by rolling the dial
2:06
It's sort of old school. So many have buttons and a multifunction button
2:10
and all that, and they're complicated. If you're in the middle of a game, you don't want to be trying to figure out where am I at
2:16
what button and what is this doing? This makes it all very simple. They're soft earpieces
2:21
It's a fairly immersive experience. So it does tend to isolate you
2:25
You don't really hear a lot what's outside. They're reasonably loose so that it's not super smushy
2:31
You don't get a headache. That's important. So you can listen to these and have these on
2:34
for hours and hours and hours. You probably shouldn't. You should probably take a break occasionally
2:39
but gamers are not always focused on their personal health. They're often more focused on winning the game. Understandable
2:46
So these work with PC and Mac, PS4, Xbox One, and of course the fantastic Nintendo Switch
2:55
And they work great. In fact, they work so well that my daughter's been using them
3:00
And here's what happened when I asked her if I could just borrow them for a second for this review
3:06
As you can see, it didn't go really well. So the good news is that I did manage to get ahold of them
3:12
and I have been using them on different things. I've been playing some games on the Switch
3:16
but I've also been using these just as audio headphones. And they're actually pretty nice
3:21
There's a nice richness to the sound, but it's really bass forward
3:26
So if you listen to like EDM or industrial or something where there's the drop that you're waiting for
3:33
you might love these headphones. There's really so much of that going on
3:37
But if you wanna have a nice, flat audio reproduction signature, these are not your headphones
3:43
But they're not designed for that. So it's not really a legit criticism
3:47
Nonetheless, you have headphones, you're gonna listen to music. You're gonna have to be expecting that it's gonna be
3:53
you know, nice reproduction, a decent soundstage and everything, but these are really focused and tuned
3:58
for a specific purpose, not a horrible thing. And so then what does the mic sound like
4:04
Well, one of the great things is, is when you have the mic right in front of your mouth
4:08
and it's easily adjustable, once you have it in front of your mouth
4:12
you get really good audio production there too. So here's a sample of audio
4:16
that I just recorded super quickly on my Macintosh. This is a sample audio of the HyperX Cloud Stinger Core
4:23
7.1 Gamer Headset microphone unit. So nothing wrong at all with that sound
4:29
Though I will say my daughter said that when she was playing on the Switch
4:33
and talking to other people in her game, they would say that she was a little soft in her volume
4:38
I don't know whether that was because she was speaking softly or whether that's to do with the circuitry in the Switch
4:45
or in that particular game, but there is no way to adjust the gain. So she just had to talk a little more loudly
4:50
which is not a horrible thing. I mean, if you're in the excitement of the game, you're going to be yelling and hollering anyway, right
4:56
So it's designed for that. Comes with, and there's no choice here
5:00
comes with a nice long wire. This is a wired headphone, this particular version
5:05
And on the end is a 3.5 millimeter jack. Now we have the Nintendo music
5:11
So I'm going to put this back in just to get that to stop
5:15
And it's the three-part connector. So that means you have left and right and microphone
5:20
exactly what you'd expect. That's compatible with a lot of different devices
5:23
So you can use this on, for example, your PC or Mac to do a Zoom call or something
5:30
And you're going to sound really nice because the microphone's right there instead of like sitting far away on your computer
5:36
And of course, everyone else is going to sound really good, like late night FM good
5:40
because of all that bass. Entirely functional, whether that's the appearance you want to have is up to you
5:46
but I've been on plenty of Zoom calls and there are definitely always, when it's a big group
5:50
there's always one or two people that have this kind of headset on and you know they're getting really good sound
5:55
Now, if you have a PC, it does also come with this PC adapter
6:01
So it's a USB 3 on one end and then a 3.5 millimeter jack on the other
6:06
And this makes it really easy if you have an old school PC that doesn't have a 3.5 millimeter jack
6:12
you can use this adapter included in the box and you are good to go there too
6:17
So PC gaming, Mac gaming, video chats, Switch, PS4, Xbox One, you got a gaming system
6:25
this thing's going to make it sound great and make you sound good too. And that's a pretty nice deal
6:30
So only thing left to talk about is the price and there's a little nuance on the price
6:34
But before we get there, I'm going to ask if you can subscribe to my channel. Really appreciate when you do that
6:39
And it's just that red button, tap or click and you are rocking. Great
6:43
Now, HyperX Cloud Stinger Core 7.1 Gamer Headset, wired edition, $49.99 at amazon.com
6:53
And if you want the wireless version, it's only $79.99. So it's 30 bucks more, but not a big deal
6:59
And then you actually are freed from that leash and tether. And that might be something much more your speed
7:04
but for 49 bucks, this is a pretty solid option for gaming headset
7:09
And it's no surprise. This is one of the most popular gaming headsets in the gaming world
7:14
Now I will recommend you poke around and look for pricing options
7:18
because I did see that Amazon isn't necessarily the most inexpensive. So poke around, look at the HyperX website itself
7:27
find the best deal, obviously. And these are a great option if you have a kid who's a gamer
7:32
or you just want to do it yourself, then this is something worth checking out
7:36
With that, I think I need to get back to my game. So, ah, there we go
7:41
All right, well, I guess I'll catch you on my next video
