If you have a Comcast Xfinity X1 box, then it's time to upgrade to an Xfinity Voice Remote and find out what it's like to have a device that listens and responds to your requests directly. Better yet, it's a free upgrade from Comcast if you're already an Xfinity customer. Dave Taylor from http://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ steps you through setup and the basics of the Xfinity Voice Remote.

hi Dave Taylor here and this time I want
0:13
to talk about this what's this this is
0:16
the old remote from the Comcast Xfinity
0:19
box now you look at it and it's a pretty
0:23
basic remote and it worked quite well
0:24
but we're done with it because now
0:27
Xfinity has this this is the new voice
0:31
remote so they sent me one to play with
0:33
it's pretty darn cool but let's start
0:36
with an unboxing you ready it's in a box
0:41
it's not in a box
0:43
how's that for cool but it's actually a
0:46
really nice remote there's a couple bits
0:47
of plastic you'll have to pull off
0:49
particularly the one in the back so the
0:50
battery is alive but then it's actually
0:53
really easy to set it up on the bottom
0:55
of the remote there's a little setup
0:56
button so what you want to do is turn on
0:58
your TV turn on your box and then you
1:02
push and hold this button and then the
1:06
little light at the top will turn green
1:07
and then you push the Xfinity button
1:10
right and I'll zoom in you can see both
1:12
of these buttons here and then it'll
1:14
prompt you on the TV to set up the
1:16
remote there's little code you punch in
1:19
and then it can control your television
1:21
and there's some codes you can punch in
1:23
and it actually will default to what the
1:25
old remote did so hopefully you won't
1:27
have to do anything and you can also
1:29
control the sound bar separately which
1:31
is great because that's my setup so I
1:33
have a vizio 4k TV I have a vizio sound
1:36
bar and it took me I don't know maybe
1:39
about 30 seconds to go through
1:41
everything with this and it's all fully
1:43
set up ready to roll so let's spin the
1:46
camera around and let me learn how to
1:48
use the voice remote while you get to
1:50
watch what's going on
1:51
alright so we're ready to go Here I am
1:53
looking at my guide which I got by
1:55
pushing the Guide button but of course
1:57
the fun of this isn't talking so let's
1:59
see what we can do
2:00
headline news okay that worked out
2:06
really well I'm going to keep bouncing
2:08
back to the guide because I don't want
2:10
to get into any legal issues with
2:12
showing too much content
2:13
that otherwise is licensed so my
2:17
apologies for that but I don't want to
2:18
get into too much trouble so that worked
2:21
really well turns out you can say the
2:22
name of any channel so for example TCM
2:27
and it moves right to that channel so
2:31
that's pretty sweet by itself
2:33
we'll leave James Cagney as a g-man and
2:36
let's see what else can we try watch The
2:39
Simpsons so you can see it shown me the
2:47
Simpsons it shows that it's airing today
2:49
and it's giving me all the on-demand
2:51
stuff so let's go back to the guide and
2:54
let's find something that's actually on
2:55
let's see South Park's on so let's try
2:57
that watch South Park do I mean this yes
3:05
South Park the TV series and see it
3:09
shows watch now on the bottom so so
3:12
that's cool but it should show me that
3:13
it's on right now so you know there's
3:17
there's a little bit of work to be done
3:19
here let's see what else can we try we
3:21
can say when are the Academy Awards and
3:29
it's found the Academy Awards in the
3:31
guide so if I choose it it now shows me
3:35
and gives me the ability to record it so
3:37
let's try something different
3:39
record the 88th Academy Awards you can
3:45
see the voice interface nails everything
3:47
I say and thinks about it and it takes
3:50
me right to here so that's not exciting
3:52
let's try that one more time when we're
3:53
not there record the 88th Academy Awards
4:00
didn't quite get that home right record
4:04
the 88th Academy Awards
4:10
there's always something let's try one
4:12
more time record the Academy Awards now
4:19
okay so now it's telling me to tune in
4:22
to watch it live but not giving me the
4:25
record option
4:26
hmm so it's possible that there are
4:30
still some things that they're going to
4:31
work on and the nice thing is is I know
4:33
Comcast will just keep surreptitiously
4:35
downloading updates to me and that will
4:38
work out very nicely but what else can
4:40
we do let's see who is Tom Cruise well
4:48
there we go
4:48
and let's try this okay appearing in so
4:53
now I'm just using the remote so now
4:54
let's see if I can find watch Top Gun I
5:01
don't actually like the movie Top Gun
5:03
but here it is it's on demand so for 399
5:07
I can be watching it momentarily and and
5:10
let's see what else we can do
5:13
show me kids shows that's nice
5:19
so that makes it really easy for the
5:22
kids to work with this and what's on
5:27
HGTV okay so you can see on the right
5:34
now it's showing me the lineup while
5:37
it's actually showing me what's on the
5:39
channel I'm on which is Turner Classic
5:41
Movies again I'm going to jump back to
5:43
the guy just so we don't get any trouble
5:45
here my favorite what should i watch
5:55
so it's using a recommendation engine
5:57
based on what I watch and probably what
5:59
I also put on the DVR I am a huge fan of
6:03
The Walking Dead I like mr. robot
6:05
I have watched heroes and expanse and
6:08
we've watched limitless
6:09
I don't know how blind-spot got onto
6:11
that list it's probably because you like
6:13
this you'll also like that but these are
6:16
all pretty good matches and I would
6:18
imagine that if you did this you'd get
6:20
results that we're pretty well tuned to
6:22
how you use your Xfinity system to
6:26
what's on tonight at 8 o'clock it's
6:31
thinking and here we go here's what's on
6:35
tonight at 8 o'clock and of course
6:36
because it has the DVR it's really easy
6:39
for us to pick something and say oh
6:43
that's the one and then push the button
6:46
I'm pushing the OK button on the remote
6:48
and I can record it easily enough and of
6:50
course you can also record a series but
6:51
hopefully you already know how to do
6:53
that so that is the xfinity voice remote
6:57
it's a work in progress but it's pretty
6:59
slick and it's definitely an improvement
7:01
so that's all there is to it and it's
7:04
actually pretty slick now I keep
7:06
thinking about this as a microphone so
7:08
I'm like holding it up and talking into
7:09
it but my suspicion is that all you need
7:12
to do is be able to push the button and
7:13
talk to it so I'd like to watch
7:16
something good on television right now
7:18
not sure that's going to work but we'll
7:21
see what happens anyway here's the best
7:23
news is that Comcast is making these
7:25
available for free so yes you heard me
7:28
right free so if you already have an
7:31
Xfinity box then you can go to Xfinity
7:33
calm
7:34
slash voice - remote here's the URL and
7:38
you can just go ahead and sign up and I
7:40
think it's like five bucks shipping I
7:42
guess if you were to actually go into a
7:44
Comcast store you can probably waive the
7:46
shipping - but it's a much nicer remote
7:49
even if you never use the voice
7:51
interface it's just a nicer remote with
7:53
a nice feel to it I think there's a lot
7:55
more smarts in it but get the hang of it
7:57
in worst case if you don't want to use
7:59
the voice remote your kids will and
8:01
they'll show you how to do it so this is
8:03
Dave Taylor and I really need to find
8:06
something worth watching on TV because
8:08
done with this video stuff so thanks for
8:10
checking it out and I'll catch you in my
8:12
next video
