Oh sure, you can put a small computer on your wrist and interact with all your friends and tech without ever pulling out a smartphone, but do you want to? Is that really the new cool? Tech expert Dave Taylor of http://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ looks at a connected, but not particularly smart, Casio Edifice EQB500 stainless steel men's watch and finds it's far more comfortable on his wrist. Sure, the watch has some neat tricks, including a second watch face (it's a chronograph-style circular steel watch face), solar power, auto time correction and a stop watch accurate to 1/1000 second, but it's the look, the weight, the solidity of the watch that appeals. Check it out on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2h9OfI2

can a not very smart watch be cooler
0:02
than a smart watch let me tell you about
0:04
it Dave Taylor here again and I want to
0:15
talk about watches now you're looking at
0:17
my wrist and you're saying don't you
0:18
have an Apple watch don't you have all
0:20
these other smart watches isn't your
0:22
wrist smarter than the Apollo Lander the
0:25
answer is well it used to be so what I'm
0:28
wearing right now and I got to say I
0:29
love this thing this is a Casio edifice
0:33
this specific model is the EQB 500 and
0:36
you can see it's big and chunky and I'm
0:39
gonna have to zoom in on some of this to
0:41
show you what all is going on here but
0:44
this is a sort of semi smart watch it
0:47
has Bluetooth and it connects with your
0:49
phone but it doesn't do much so it's not
0:53
notifications doesn't show you your
0:56
email it doesn't give you a chance to
0:57
watch a movie it's just a classic men's
1:01
chronograph style watch and it uses the
1:04
Bluetooth to do things like
1:06
automatically every night synchronize
1:09
the time so the watch is always accurate
1:11
so you never have to say mmm looks like
1:14
I've lost four or five seconds in the
1:16
last six years you know what to do that
1:18
now if your watch is that accurate
1:20
you're probably in good shape anyway but
1:22
this one it's really designed to be and
1:24
this particular model in specifically is
1:26
designed to be like a world time watch
1:29
so you go to the app and I have it's on
1:33
my iPhone I have to find it but let's
1:36
see you get to the app you pair it with
1:39
your watch and all I have to do is push
1:41
and hold down and then the app should
1:46
connect there we go so here's the Casio
1:49
watch plus app and it's paired with the
1:52
watch and there's not a ton and you can
1:54
do I can change which city I would like
1:56
to track so maybe we'll go to Hongkong
1:58
instead of London and send it to the
2:01
watch and then I might want to set up an
2:05
alarm real quick I'm not going to
2:07
because I will have to remember how to
2:08
turn it off and just a couple more
2:11
things you can do under watch settings
2:13
so here's how long the watch should stay
2:15
connected to the phone and I talked
2:17
earlier about time adjustments to make
2:19
sure your watch is always in sync I have
2:22
it set to every 5 a.m. this is something
2:24
you can change if you'd like but I don't
2:26
imagine it really matters that much
2:28
that's pretty much about what you can do
2:31
so very simple app not much smarts like
2:34
I said it gives you all this stuff and
2:36
it has all these different features but
2:38
quite frankly I've been wearing this for
2:39
a couple of weeks I don't use any of
2:41
them it has a stopwatch and if you do
2:44
lap time and stuff it actually can store
2:46
up to a hundred of those events and then
2:49
download those to your phone so you
2:53
actually have if you're like a horse
2:55
racer or you're working with race cars
2:57
then you have all this great data me I
3:00
don't really have many horses and the
3:03
racing that I do tends to be how quickly
3:05
can I get to the mailbox before I get
3:07
too cold so not super exciting but let
3:11
me take it off and I'll show you it's
3:13
just it's a big watch this is not a
3:16
watch for a young little wrist it's
3:19
probably not a watch for most women's
3:21
wrists although you know your your taste
3:24
your decision it's heavy it's a
3:27
fifty-two millimeter and it's a big
3:31
crystal on it obviously it has a clasp
3:33
but I actually had to find someone who
3:35
could adjust it so would fit my wrist
3:37
properly which turned out to be an
3:40
entire ten dollar investment one of the
3:44
other really cool things about is it's
3:46
solar-powered there's no little solar
3:49
panel on there or anything it's just
3:51
magic basically for every eight minutes
3:54
you put it in the Sun it powers for I
3:56
don't know a week or something so
3:58
basically as far as I could tell all
4:00
this means is that if you have it on
4:03
your wrist like most normal people and
4:06
occasionally it's displayed and you're
4:08
sitting and you're in the Sun then by
4:10
the time you're done with that cup of
4:12
coffee you've probably powered it for
4:13
another month so super cool so solar
4:17
powered it does automatic time
4:19
correction like I said mobile link
4:21
function with Bluetooth don't expect
4:24
notifications don't expect video
4:26
expect emoji it's nothing like that it's
4:30
just a watch in fact really you could
4:32
probably never ever pay attention to the
4:35
connectivity and be fine
4:37
dual time and stopwatch to a one
4:40
thousandth of a second so pretty
4:42
accurate and it's pretty darn good I'm
4:44
not sure again what I time that needs to
4:47
be that accurate but it's good
4:49
water-resistant up to a hundred meters
4:51
which is terrific because you know I'm
4:54
probably like most people that means to
4:56
me that I don't have to take it off in
4:58
the hot tub and I don't have to take it
4:59
off in the shower
5:00
huge whip and what else it has a daily
5:03
alarm date display there's all sorts of
5:06
stuff you can set up on the phone but
5:08
even there the actual app from Casio
5:11
isn't hugely feature 'fl cuz the watch
5:13
isn't hugely feature full it's just a
5:16
straight ahead men's chronograph that
5:18
just happens to have some connection
5:20
capabilities and I just want to say that
5:24
I like this way more than I thought I
5:27
would when I first put it on I'm like I
5:29
don't know that my Apple watch is I'm
5:31
kind of missing the feature set but
5:33
after wearing it for a couple of days I
5:35
just like looking down I like seeing
5:37
this big metal watch and I will say that
5:40
a couple of my friends when I pointed it
5:42
out to them they said oh I thought you
5:43
had a Rolex dude so I am NOT saying this
5:46
looks like a Rolex if you know what
5:48
you're doing and know what watches are
5:50
but it definitely is more that style
5:52
than the sort of dorky little square
5:55
screen of the Apple watch although
5:57
that's pretty trendy in some circles -
5:59
so how much would you pay for this watch
6:01
well prices are kind of all over the
6:03
place on the web I will just say that at
6:06
amazon.com it runs 269 bucks and it's a
6:09
beautiful gift it's really I think my
6:13
dad would have really liked this watch
6:15
and honestly he would have not even paid
6:17
attention to any of the connectivity
6:19
features which would be totally fired
6:21
it's just a nice watch anyway this is
6:23
Dave Taylor and I know you're gonna
6:25
actually click the subscribe button I'm
6:27
timing how long it takes for you to
6:30
subscribe okay you subscribed thank you
6:33
and I will catch you once I get my watch
6:36
back on
6:38
I will catch you in my next video
