May 30, 2025
When Xcel Energy sent along a new third generation Nest Learning Thermostat, we decided to pop off the old first gen unit and replace it. But it's not quite that easy to upgrade your smart wi-fi thermostat, as Dave Taylor of http://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ finds out when he gets a 3rd generation Nest through the http://www.XcelEnergyStore.com/ and saves $50 on the purchase!

hi Dave Taylor here again and this time
0:13
I want to talk about my Nest Thermostat
0:15
that's this guy and I have a first
0:18
generation Nest Thermostat so it's a
0:20
couple years old at this point and they
0:22
just released a third gen which is cool
0:24
lots of nice new features and certainly
0:26
a significantly upgraded design but you
0:30
know it's expensive now the good news is
0:32
Excel Energy for those of us in Colorado
0:35
actually has a $50 rebate right now so
0:38
that means that I picked up a new third
0:40
generation Nest Thermostat haven't
0:43
installed it yet for only 199 bucks
0:46
that's pretty sweet deal in fact the
0:48
Excel Energy store online has the best
0:50
deal in Colorado because of that rebate
0:53
so in this video I'm going to zoom in
0:55
we're going to go through all the steps
0:57
I'm going to show you how you go from a
0:58
first gen to what will hopefully end up
1:01
being our third gen thermostat sporting
1:04
it's fancy new interface on my wall all
1:07
right so before I even start though I
1:09
need to go downstairs and I need to turn
1:12
off the power to my whole furnace and
1:14
air conditioning system you do not want
1:17
that coming on while this is all being
1:20
rewired cuz that can blow a fuse or blow
1:22
a circuit board so let me walk down and
1:25
I'll show you here we go it's it's a
1:27
furnace room it's not very well lit or
1:29
anything here's the big switch all I
1:31
need to do is flip the switch all right
1:34
now that the power's off we're ready to
1:35
go and you can see that the nest is
1:38
reporting correctly that there's a power
1:40
issue no sweat we're going to just pull
1:42
it off and takes a little bit of getting
1:44
used to but give it a good pull and we
1:48
can put that aside now you can see
1:50
here's the wiring and here's what's
1:52
really critical is to pay attention and
1:54
really look closely at how you have
1:56
things wired so I have Rh to Red w one
2:00
to white but here's the funny one y1 is
2:03
to Blue even though I have a yellow wire
2:06
in there and then finally G is to Green
2:08
I have written a handy little
2:10
poit so now I will be able to keep track
2:14
of what wires which and you can't quite
2:15
see the whole thing don't worry about it
2:17
I got it under control and by the way
2:19
here's one thing they've done that's not
2:21
super user friendly is they've changed
2:24
the orientation of things so you can see
2:28
this is the first gen here's what we're
2:30
going to replace it with what do you
2:32
notice that's different the screw holes
2:35
are not on the sides they're on the top
2:37
and bottom so hopefully the plate
2:40
underneath it will work with this we'll
2:42
find out let me just get that other
2:44
screw
2:44
[Music]
2:47
off and Nest really includes everything
2:49
even the screwdriver see it's a nest
2:51
screwdriver how Swanky is
2:53
[Music]
2:58
that let's see and and that pulls the
3:00
Whole Thing Off the Wall not actually
3:03
what I expected I thought that black
3:04
part would be part of it but okay so now
3:07
we need to figure out how to get the
3:08
wires out so the way this is supposed to
3:10
work is that you lift this and then the
3:14
wire comes out but I don't know whether
3:16
the deal is that I just have too old a
3:17
unit or not but it ain't working so
3:20
instead handy wire
3:22
clippers we'll simply clip the wires
3:24
since we know exactly what order they go
3:27
in and then we'll restrip to make it
3:31
easy
3:34
so let's get that fourth
3:41
wire in the new unit they got a much
3:45
much improved mechanism for putting in
3:47
those wires so that's good and also
3:50
notice things are in different order so
3:52
I'm glad I wrote it down that way but
3:55
let's go ahead and strip these wires and
3:57
get them ready to go all right nicely
3:59
prepped wires we're going to go ahead
4:01
and fold the yellow one back since we
4:03
don't need it and all these we're going
4:05
to put through the
4:07
middle and I guess we'll figure out the
4:10
screws as we go a bit of a drag but
4:13
let's see so now starting at the top RH
4:17
is red and Rh is that one so we're going
4:21
to make the Bold assumption that the
4:23
labels are the
4:25
same
4:26
and push insert let go
4:30
way way easier than the old one there we
4:34
go looks like we're good I think I'm
4:35
done with this piece of paper and we
4:38
have our wires to wires let's let's pull
4:41
the piece of paper back and double check
4:43
so we have Rh to Red we have W1 to White
4:49
we have y1 to Blue somewhat confusingly
4:53
and we have G to Green so that all looks
4:56
good the spirit levels right on maybe a
5:00
tiny bit off good
5:02
enough so this looks good let's go ahead
5:05
and put the new unit
5:06
on and if you look we just want to line
5:10
things up so you can see there that we
5:13
have this plug all we need to do is get
5:14
it to line up with that fairly easy push
5:18
it on and nothing happens why does
5:22
nothing happen because the power's still
5:24
off so let me go downstairs flip the
5:27
power and we'll see what happens
5:51
looks like it's all working let's set it
5:54
up English whoops
5:57
no English us
6:02
it's a bit more
6:03
stiff but it's
6:05
okay
6:08
connect there's my
6:11
network and you don't really need to see
6:14
my password so we'll just move on to the
6:16
next thing nice and quick all right
6:18
we're connecting fingers
6:24
crossed all right we're online I think
6:27
that's all we need to do what the people
6:29
at Nest have told me is that it
6:32
automatically figures out your
6:34
configuration from the previous
6:35
thermostat which is very nice cuz I
6:38
don't really want to have to go and
6:39
reconfigure everything obviously there's
6:41
an
6:42
update so that's it the new Nest
6:45
Generation 3 or third gen nest whatever
6:48
you want to call it is now installed I
6:50
did the upgrade myself pretty easy
6:53
really the key thing is turn off your
6:55
thermostat power and then pay really
6:58
close attention to how you all your
7:00
wires set up on the old one so that you
7:02
do exactly the same on the new one you
7:04
can see this is the farsight analog
7:07
clock so that's pretty cool but most
7:09
importantly you can do this yourself and
7:11
if you're like me in Colorado and you
7:13
have Excel Energy as your power company
7:16
you can go to the Excel Energy store and
7:18
right now there's a $50 rebate so this
7:21
thermostat only runs 199 bucks it's a
7:24
pretty sweet deal now if you have a
7:26
different kind of thermostat then the
7:28
upgrade might be a little bit more
7:29
tricky but still they have a lot of
7:31
video online and of course that $50
7:33
rebates for any Wi-Fi thermostat any
7:36
smart thermostat at Excel not just the
7:38
nest so you can check it all out at
7:41
Excel Energy store.com this is Dave
7:44
Taylor from as Dave Taylor and now that
7:46
I have my Swanky new Nest Generation 3
7:51
thermostat I think I'm just going to go
7:52
and relax and actually clean up after
7:55
all this mess but relax and enjoy my new
7:58
thermostatic settings I'll see you in my
